Hey everyone, welcome back to my channel! Today, we're diving into another fascinating topic: Catalina Island. Located just 26 miles off the coast of Southern California, this island has a rich history that dates back thousands of years.
The island's first inhabitants were the Native Americans, who lived there long before European settlers arrived. The first documented visit by a European was in 1544, when Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo sailed around the Baja Peninsula. Interestingly, neither the Tongva nor the Chumash claimed Catalina as their land.
In 1852, the island became part of the United States following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. By 1929, it had a population of over 3,000 and even had its own mayor! Today, Catalina Island is known for its stunning beauty and unique features like the Wrigley Mansion and Avalon Casino.
That's it for today's history lesson on Catalina Island! I hope you enjoyed learning about this fascinating piece of American history.
