    Before Rick Wakeman was the keyboard player with Yes, he was a successful studio musician. His recollection of the recording of Morning Has Broken is fascinating and humorous. Check out this audio clip for the story and a solo piano performance. kzread.info/dash/bejne/jGhrrM2NnLXSdbQ.html

    "Morning Has Broken" kzread.info/dash/bejne/mJeNz7CCc9Gvoto.html is actually a Christian Hymn of Thanksgiving, with text by English poet and children's author Eleanor Farjeon set to the Scottish Gaelic tune "Bunessan." It first appeared in the second edition of Songs of Praise (1931). In 1971, Yes keyboardist/composer Rick Wakeman happened to be recording his album "The Six Wives of Henry the Eighth" while Cat Stevens was in an adjacent studio working on songs for what would become "Teaser and the Firecat." Wakeman sat down and began to improvise a piano accompaniment to "Morning has Broken," which was a rough sketch of what would later become "Catherine Howard" kzread.info/dash/bejne/inyDr9GaaMLfkdI.html . Engineers rolled the tape, and the rest is history. Except that Wakeman would not receive due credit or royalties for his contribution until sometime after 2000.

    From Wikipedia- “ "Morning Has Broken" is a hymn first published in 1931. It has words by English author Eleanor Farjeon and was inspired by the village of Alfriston in East Sussex, then set to a traditional Scottish Gaelic tune, "Bunessan". It is often sung in children's services and in funeral services.”

  • @IllumeEltanin

    @IllumeEltanin

    2 жыл бұрын

    Ah... Also from Wikipedia. Cat Stevens' recording, with a piano arrangement arranged and performed by Rick Wakeman, led to the song being known internationally. When shaping "Morning Has Broken" for recording, Stevens started with the hymn, which took around 45 seconds to sing in its basic form. Producer Paul Samwell-Smith told him he could never put something like that on an album, and that it had to be at least three minutes, though an acoustic demo of an early Stevens version lasts almost three minutes. Prior to the actual recording Stevens heard Wakeman play something in the recording booth. It was a rough sketch of what would later become "Catherine Howard". Stevens told Wakeman that he liked it and wanted something similar as the opening section, the closing section and, if possible, a middle section as well. Wakeman told Stevens he could not as it was his piece destined for a solo album, but Stevens persuaded him to adapt his composition. In 2000, Wakeman released an instrumental version of "Morning Has Broken" on an album of the same title. That same year he gave an interview on BBC Radio 5 Live in which he said he had agreed to perform on the Cat Stevens track for £10 and was "shattered" that he was omitted from the credits, adding that he never received the money either. On his return to performance as Yusuf Islam, Stevens made a payment to Wakeman and apologized for the original non-payment, which he said arose from confusion and a misunderstanding on the record label's part. On a documentary aired on British television, Wakeman stated that he felt Stevens's version of "Morning Has Broken" was a very beautiful piece of music that had brought people closer to religious truth. He expressed satisfaction in having contributed to this. Wakeman included a 3:42 version on his 2017 album of piano arrangements, Piano Portraits.

The beginning of the show is with ‘Moonshadow’ which will forever be my favorite Cat Stevens song, def give that or ‘Miles From Nowhere’. YES, Jamel! FINALLY, you got to Cat Stevens/Yusuf (I've been asking for so long). 😄 He's an amazing singer/songwriter who started in the 60's, and he's still active til today. I recommend some classics; "Peace Train", "Oh, Very Young", "Father and Son", a more recent release "Roadsinger", (about his journey in the industry after converting to Islam). And my most favorite song, "Moonshadow". There is so much more, but that's a start. Thank you so much, Jamel! ☮ out. ✌🏼

    Cat Stevens spent most of his life trying to find the meaning of life & spiritual fulfillment. He looked into many different religions until his brother, David, gave him a copy of the Qur'an. Stevens converted to the Islam religion & changed his name to Yusuf Islam. He now sings mostly religious music. His "Peace Train" is a great song.

"Don't Be Shy" "Oh, Very Young" "Here Comes My Baby" "Katmandu" "The First Cut Is The Deepest" "Father and Son" "Morning Has Broken" "Moonshadow" "Where Do The Children Play?" "On The Road To Find Out" "If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out" "(I Never Wanted) To Be A Star" "Daytime" "I Want To Live In A Wigwam" and "Peace Train" are ALL songs that I am confident that you will adore.
