    Great glider! How do you achieve such a start, in which the glider at the highest point at launch goes into horizontal flight without loss of height? At the moment when the top point is reached, the glider loses altitude and only then goes to horizontal flight. How to avoid it?

    I use a lot of right rudder to force it around and then twist the right wing to a higher incidence (about 1" out from the wing root--twist the entire wing, not the flaps or the tip) to keep the model from rolling into a steep bank. For flapped models, you use a lot of stab incidence and fly with a fairly forward CG. It takes a lot of practice and initial trimming is best done outside on a calm, dry evening.

    You could make a rubber powered prop kit to either have it on or off the glider (convertible).

  • @joshuawfinn

    @joshuawfinn

    Justwantahover unfortunately that won't work on a plane with flexible wings like these because they require the model to stay within a pretty narrow speed range.

    Thats pretty impressive! what thickness of the vector foam do you use? Do you taper it like many European plans show? hopefully you find a use for the blue foam. you can sand it, but you have to be very careful if you do, when it gets thin it can catch and roll up from the sanding block. hopefully it is thin enough to not need that.

    Ross Clements, unfortunately you can't sand Vector Board, but we've found ways to implement it so it works out well. I'll send you one of these soon so you can try it out. My plan with the blue foam is to not do any sanding at all and just use it to build Yashinskiy style gliders.

    joshuawfinn sounds good to me! The place I fly is 44 feet to the ceiling, so it should work just fine. Last time the air was pretty bad so I could only fly the rc stuff, it has made me realize I need some heavier models to fly too. The blue foam works pretty well, as it is pretty floppy. How will you deal with the sudden thickness change from the wood of the leading edge to the foam? I suppose at such a low speed it makes no difference.

    Yes, as you say, your catapult launch was rubbish, all that ceiling and you didn't hit any of it. I could see you were aiming to clip the lower section right on the edge to give us a spectacular shower of broken balsa 😜 This really is a beauty and I think the calmness and lighting of the indoor venue gives us time to appreciate that. I might just add that the camera person was doing an excellent job, even getting a good shot of Caleb's efforts 😍👍

    GrandadIsAnOldMan hehehehe! Definitely has been a rewarding project and even though it doesn't fly as long as the Russian glider, it's really fun and has been surprisingly easy to trim.

    Boy that’s exciting news. Is there a chance this could be flown outdoors? I don’t have easy access to a indoor venue. Will you be able to offer the Graupner vector foam separately?

    ratride1, these aren't really the best for outdoor flying. I'm hoping to release some outdoor handlaunch models this year that should be pretty satisfying. We've got some new equipment that should open up the production capabilities a lot.

    ratride1 as for the Vector Board, that's a possibility in the future but right now I'm going through the stuff like it's water because the Science Olympiad gliders use that stuff and they're sold before the wood even gets onto the laser bed.

    joshuawfinn, I’ve seen at the Graupner website, foams of 0.2, 0.5 and 0.8 mm thickness too. Do you think some of them would work for the wing flaps?

  • @joshuawfinn

    @joshuawfinn

    5 жыл бұрын

    Pablo Astica 0.8 might work but I wouldn't go thinner at this size. 0.5 is what we use on the Protégé Lite, and that stuff is crazy soft. It works out ok because they are very light. I hope 0.2mm will work for F1N-150 but I'm pretty sure it won't.
