Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
Trying to work out how to stop cats jumping your fence or gate? Well....designing a cat proof fence seems difficult expensive and often is an eye sore. I wanted to do something different from what I've seen so designed my own cheap and easy 'PVC pipe' no roller system that you can DIY to keep those felines in the yard. Checkout my cat containment system!

@@saaa9964 no i haven't yet. We're debating over the piping or the perpendicular fencing. We have a large backyard with coyotes on the other side so there's a lot of debate here in our household as to the best way to do this. And the project kind of got sidelined by some family crisises. I'm glad you asked though, its put the fire back underneath my butt again. I will definitely update when I do. I believe we had decided on the 3½ or 4in diameter, though. The thinking behind being the wider, the harder to hook paws around.

What width pipe did you use please . I have ordered 1100mm pipe . I hope this is the correct size as my present fencing has failed . Thanks
I really like this option!! Thanks for sharing!! An upside down gutter works as well...just don't screw it in too hard because the "floppy" of it, is what deters the cats as well as them head butting the inside of the gutter...no helmets allowed on the cats!!! 😂😅
Perfect! I have an HOA, so this is ideal since it can be mounted at the edge of my fence and not along the top (which the HOA wouldn't approve). I need to keep a new cat IN my yard and I have two dogs with a doggie door and can't manage the cat going in or out. This is IDEAL!
Glad I found you. So much cheaper and less complicated than most . Thanks

Neat idea. I had a similar issue with my dog jumping the fence. It was a short fence (about 1m), but we had to place barriers at each corner because the dog would climb over the fence at the corners. It wasn't cheap to get her out of the dog pound.

Worked for me! The cats didn’t even attempt escape :) they loved sun bathing in the afternoons and I loved them helping me in the garden! I rent, so have added fence extenders on the lower side fences. On these parts I added core flute panelling underneath the piping which was secured on the inside of the fence, not the top. No issues, although it was kinda ugly. Recommend! Great DIY solution!

This remarkable system works--at least on my two cats. They are Himalayan with short legs like Persians, but he managed to reach the top of the block wall before I had the PVC pipes installed. Presto, my cat was immediately deterred when he jumped and reached the top where the PVC roller was installed. I shall now complete the job, installing the PVC pipes to the rest of the block wall. By the way, the pipes work just fine on cement--block walls.

Brilliant. I can afford this!
While it is a lot simpler than the roller kind I'd hate to find our cat could figure out how to reach over it or somehow get enough grip with its pads to shimmy over. I assume you found that the hard round plastic surface was just too slippery for the cat, and protruding out vs just on top creates an extra overhand obstacle. Did you ever get a video of your cat trying and failing to escape?

Great idea! Idk if it would have stopped my cat we had when I was a kid...he was practically part monkey, haha...
On it! moving into a new house soon and this was stressing me out. Please do let me know if they have found a way to get out.
It is soooo nice to see a responsible cat owner. In Oklahoma, cat owners are not required to make any attempt to keep their cat off of the neighbors property (where they kill birds and tree frogs and scar up the fence wood so the rain can further degrade it). It is up to the person that does not want the cats on their property to cat proof. I have tried everything short of putting razor wire on top of the fences which is probably illegal on a 4 foot front yard fence anyway. I'm just tired of spending my own money for something that should be their responsibility. I do wonder how the pvc being stationary stops the cats from going over. I have seen the kind that has wire or something running through the center so that it rolls whenever the cat tries to get a grip.
I wonder if this will work on my balcony railing. Thank you.

@@saracleger3913 I did not try it. We have a neighbor cat that occasionally gets into our yard to explore, driving my 2 kitties wild with anger (and passion). My Siamese girl has a secret love for this tomcat, while my fluffy black kitty wants to slice him up. This cat, I'll call him Tucker (cause that's his name), sneaks into our yard late at night and I'm afraid if he does, he won't be able to get out and I don't want him trapped there when I let my cats out, it would be fight night.

@@benzwire7967 You could try fixing the pipe on the top of the fence to deter %ucker, and it might keep your cats in too.
what about a chain link fence? do you think they could grasp top link and get over?
What bracket would I need on a colourbond metal fence?
Amazing! Does it roll/spin when they attempt to jump out?
Very clever and elegant solution. Thank you! Most fences in the US are 6 ft high which is 1.8 meters. I have a neighbor's black cat using my fenced back yard as a litter box and hunting ground for my wild birds at the feeder. I've picked up over 10 lbs of litter from him so far or more. He hunts my pretty wild birds daily, knocking over the large tray feeder and wasting a ton of seed, and killing the birds. I'm so fed up with this cat. He won't quit. So I need to block him from entering and eventually trap him and rehome him. He is obviously getting crappy food and care from his owner because he travels quite far daily for fresh meat. I hope your solution works. I don't want to prevent the squirrels running on fence to feed as well, only the cat and this might work very well. Some advice for your cats from my years of cat and dog rescues: Feed cats raw ground beef and sardines. They need this, which is why they hunt. Other cooked meats like pork and chicken are also good. Fresh ground carrots, cabbage or kale, chopped up lettuce in their meat. Cooked eggs, Greek Yoghurt. Vitamins and Fish Oil such as Iceland Pure Sardine and Anchovy Oil (not Salmon oil which no cat, dog, human can digest but bears can). This fresh food diet will lower hunting needs. Lowered hunting means less reason to leave your compound. Also give them once a year, Egg Yolk Lecithin 600 mg 2 x day with food for one month every year. Lecithin is natural. It dissolves fat in the body, and thereby shrinks the fat around the hairballs in every cat's gut. In 2-3 weeks, they will excrete massive hairballs that have been sitting around for years making their digestion poor. My 19 yr old cat threw up 3 massive cigar hairballs after only 2 weeks of Lecithin. Only use Egg Yolk Lecithin, not Soy or Sunflower. Dogs and humans can have all 3 kinds. Also give your cat Thomas Labs Bio Case Plus which is an Enzyme/Probiotic formula that will aid digestion and clear material in bowels effectively. Once the hairballs are shrunk down, a bit of Magnesium powder or laxative will clear them out. Only give any laxative after one month of Lecithin use. The Enzymes are useful for rescued animals, seniors cats, young kittens, etc. Use daily or occasionally as needed. This will give you magnificent cats with zero health issues. If you spay and neuter, roaming will cease.

Looks very easy to put up, plus kind on the wallet too! I was reading that you've had no escapes? I guess the thing is cats cant grip the pipe to get up? Is that how it works?

Yes, this is very ingenius BUT I guarantee you that cat will still find a way to get out. They always do. But, this is a good alternative to me spending $1600 for coyote rollers. Get me some PV piping and make my own! Thanks! You just saved me about $1400.

Coyote rollers still stop working after a while lol
curious about that corner where the aluminum panel siding is up and the fence has the tubing on it. Seems a cat could easily jump up that aluminum panel and get over the fence.
I would love to do this, but if there are any structures inside the yard next to the fence, for example a potting bench, then this wouldn't be possible, would it? I do the TNR and I have lots of cats in my backyard that I have had spayed and neutered and my neighbor is starting to trap them and have them euthanized and I'm very upset about this! It would be great if I could keep them all in my backyard but I really don't know if this would work. They also jump up on the roof and get out that way. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
How does this work for a chain link fence???
Excellent! Do you reckon it would work against foxes?
Hey mate, What size ID pipe did ya use? Cheers!
Will this work for chain link fence too?
What size PVC tubing is that? Thank you
I love this idea and I'm going to try it! It's so much more cost effective than alternatives. My question is this: I have a six foot wooden fence with the railing on my side. Do you think I could install the pipe on the railing instead of on the top of the fence?
@enmodo
11 ай бұрын
Not sure if you ever tried it but if you look at the video you'll see he didn't put it right on top, it is on the side of the top so it sticks out and away from the fence. That creates an overhang the cat is forced to try and reach over. I think the important thing is the height limit he mentions - if they PVC is too low the cat could jump up and over it and then use it as a nice rail to stand on for the remainder of its escape! But being hard and slippy it is still a better barrier than wood or netting overhang.
Curious, what inch pipe and brackets please?
My ballerina-esque cat would tiptoe elegantly over this once she'd surveyed her options from the top ledge (the horizontal board on the fence).
Great idea. I'm going to try this to keep the neighbour's hairball OUT

So 2 years on have your cats escape at all? Just wondering I’m getting a rescue Bengal I was going to make a small catio but I’d like her to have access to the whole tiny inner city yard. So I’m hoping this will work. Yes I’ve tried netting my whole yard but it keeps the birds and possums out and I like the wildlife to eat the peaches. While keeping my cat safe. Thankyou.
Does black ABS pipe work as well as white PVC pipe?
Nice idea but would have loved to see the cats attempting to escape and see what they did!
I have a cinder block wall. My cat discovered he could jump up to the top and sit. My fear is he'll jump down and roam. I need to cat-proof the back yard now. The other methods look ugly and require putting the netting all the way around but be have trees and bushes in the way. The wall is different heights on different sides of the house. What is the best way and height to install the pipe to ensure he can't jump up and over land not he wall ledge? All of your answers so far are for wood or chain link. Thanks
what size of pipes/tubes? How did you attach them to the fence?
