DIY Coyote Roller Animal Deterrent
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
Trying to give my cat backyard freedom but he insists on jumping to the roof and escaping. I am installing homemade Coyote rollers on top of my deck railing. You can also do this on top of a fence using the 4x4 posts or on the top side of the fence, which is great for keeping dogs in- or out. I recommend doing 3-4’ length so it will spin better. Tools needed for one section of Coyote Roller: 4 -#10 x 1” flathead screws. 2 4” L Brackets. 2 light duty 3/16” clips. Vinyl coated cable 3/32” in desired length plus at least 1’ extra. 1” PVC pipe in desired length. 3” PVC pipe in desired length. Wire cutters. Screwdriver. Socket wrench. Table saw or hacksaw. Pliers. Drill. This has kept my cat off the roof. I hope this works for you!

No for that just tape bills that you owe to the side of the pvc pipe and you should be fine.

You're really smart lady.
Nice video! Worked like a charm. Great job on the build and your hair stylist is awesome. 😊
Nice work. We are building a cattle panel fence that is about 6 feet now instead of our 4 foot chainlink. I like this method, as it is much less expensive that the branded rollers!! Cheers!
Well done, thanks for the video!
Thank you! I am going to try this for my two siamese cats who love to sit outside.

Yesss, I can do this. Great vid. The u.
Use electrical conduit PVC instead of plumbing PVC. The conduit is UV protected and cheaper.
Why two pipes and not just only one? thanks
Is it still working?
Thanks I need this for my dog who keeps escaping
Do you have a video showing the cat failing?
"He didn't make it" 😮😥 But thank goodness for text overlay!! 😄😄😄 ("he is okay")
Great idea. But your cord need to be ON TOP of the bracket (not on the side) before you tighten it. Thag way when the cat add tension to it as tbey jump. The pipe stays straight and spins. If it bends too much. It wont spin. Good luck. Im building one too

Someone had made a suggestion to make this better. Instead of using the cable, use threaded rods.
Brilliant 😎👍
First a 8 foot tall fence and then the roller
Very good tutorial! We have a big backyard (1.5 acres) and I want to keep our cats inside and pests outside. The only problem is that the majority of our fence is chainlink attached to metal posts, so I can't screw in the brackets. Do you have any recommendations for how to attach the wire to the top of a metal fence?
@Neartownvethoustonveterinarian
5 жыл бұрын
you can actually install on chain link the same way. It is possible to drill a hole in that pipe. there is actually another video out there that shows him installing on chain link
@brussell639

Use self tapping screws for the metal posts.

In the description of a video from Earrth Tiitan about Oscilote catfence is a link from somebody (Sassy ... ?) who made it on top of a round metal fence.
He didn’t make it! Hahaha but he’s okay! Nice one.
What is the length in centimetres of the PVC pipe?
@Neartownvethoustonveterinarian

About 90 centimeters per section
question do you think this would work on a wood fence to keep people out im having an issue with someone jumping my fence when im not home and stealing stuff from my yard :(

You could get razor wire or electric for your fence but if you don’t want That you could get a large watch or guard dog, etc

How effective is this for cats so they can't escape form yard?
@thomasharris5151

Very effective! The first time I saw this was a guy using it to keep his cats in the backyard.
O got a dog that does this and just found out about this trick...im having 30 inches of wood added to my fencing...dumb idea now that i found this..
i myself would run the wire thru continually around the whole area instead of putting brackets side by side.
@JoshuaLinn

Interesting idea, i may try this. I wonder if it will allow for more or less tension on the cable, I think slack would be a problem for the pipes to roll well.
@youarehere1251

The other video, they use electrical conduit to replace the wire, no slack.

I imagine you could use any type of cable. I prefer the metal type cable because it remains taught. It was inexpensive at Lowes.

Creeper comment a year later: Look for the video where they used clear corrugated poly panels on top of the fence. The cat climbed up as far as it could and could not get a grip on the polycarbonate panel.

Cats walk so quietly i doubt you'd hear them on your roof.
Consider using threaded rod, it's cheap and it would be so much faster. Nice work

@Neartownvethoustonveterinarian

@@amyannes You can buy long "threaded rods" and the whole piece is threaded. You would just put a nut on the end to hold in place. I really wish i thought of that.

Neartownvet Thanks for clarifying that. Thanks also for your video-looking forward to trying it in our cat area!!
@billveder1071

@@amyannes Like neartown explained you can buy it in long sections, I used an electric cut off wheel to cut it but a hacksaw will work. Each end goes in the L-bracket, pvc or pex is on the inside. When your done add a nut to each end of the threaded rod. I used 3/8" threaded rod. Use 1/2" or 3/4" pex, I think 1/2" worked better. You want the pex or pvc reasonably close to the rod so it spins easier. The first mistake I made was using 1-1/2" PVC. It was too heavy, when a cat jumped up and grabbed it, it wouldn't spin. Good luck

Do I need to have green hair ?…
@y0nd3r

Absolutely!
Love this, but I have 10 8 foot fence panels in just the front yard I would have to equip. Probably twice that number in the back yard. I shouldn't have to spend all that money just so that cat owners can maintain their level of irresponsible pet owner.
@y0nd3r

This is such a problem all over the United States. Somebody with money needs to sue their city and appeal all the way to the Supreme Court. Cats murder critters on our property and damage our fences with their claws and body weight. The rain gets in all those claw marks and further degrades the wood. It is so completely nuts that I am suspicious that evolution has somehow found a way through cat poop to get humans to protect them at all costs. Think about it. Kitty litter, cat poop, shitty paws on the food counter?
Must be awful to have a cat walk on your roof! 😵💫
