I agree with you. Unless someone or a group of people volunteers to feed these cats, a lot of them or worst all of them, will end up dying of hunger. I would say the best solution, is to transport the somewhat healthy or healthy ones for adoption and euthanize the really sicks ones with low chance of survival. I would help if I could, but I don't live in Japan nor have money to help these cats.

Hey guys!! Important update! Apparently there is an organization that takes care of feeding the cats, and since they regulate their food they ask that visitors NOT feed the cats since it can lead to either overfeeding, or the cats can be fed things that aren't good for them. There's supposed to be a sign, although none of us saw it anywhere so I'm not sure if it's even there anymore. But there's a box next to it: blog-imgs-69-origin.fc2.com/y/a/r/yaroneko/b4c0f5a4b1c211e38645127f205c258e_8.jpg And if you brought cat food with you, you can put it in that black cat box so the organization can regulate the cats' diets. However, we personally still think it'd be nice to bring them water since it at least when we went it was very hot and there didn't seem to be many clean water sources around for them. So yeah! Update: lololol we found where the sign was supposed to be, and it's completely faded away now. If they haven't redone it, I'm not sure if that means they're still enforcing it? imgur.com/a/3ySuN

Aw, I feel so bad for those stray cats. If I could have as many pets as possible, I would adopt each and every stray cat, dog.

The local economy is almost completely dependant on tourists coming there to see the cats, too. So, if you love cats, and you care if elderly Japanese people can make at least a minimum income, that's a perfect combination. 🤜💢🤛

That's the case for a lot of these small depopulated islands. There's a cluster of them in the Inland Sea that have become a sort of living laboratory for contemporary art and architecture as a tourist draw as well. Japan's tourism numbers have been skyrocketing in recent years but so much of it is locked into the Tokyo-Kyoto bullet train corridor and doesn't get distributed into areas where it's really needed. I always try to make a point of branching out to less visited spots whenever I visit.

If I was a millionaire, I'd buy land on this island, open up a cat themed restaurant that either used local ingredients or payed the local stores to import ingredients (so customers who liked the food could buy the raw ingredients from the locals too) and use a portion of the profits to open a cat charity on the island that included a veteran. That would probably be the best way to deal with this, fix as many of the cats as possible and when the village finally ceases to be there will only be a few cats left that will be easier to adopt out.

Awww. Kitties all like, "welcome to our land!" I seriously hope the island improves for the natives and overall health of the cat population.

Thank you for showing us a real view of this place and not hiding the sick and injured cats from us, even though it's sad :( I kinda hope enough tourists go to this place to warrant someone actually caring for them and getting them the vet care they need. Poor babes...

You guys have such big, beautiful hearts!! I admire your love & compassion. It would be wonderful to start a Go Fund Me account to help the people & cats who reside on this island. Maybe, raising enough funds through a Go Fund Me account or just the posting of your KZread video will reach the sights of a veterinarian that has the the time, means, ability, & willingness to help these cats medically. Rachel & Jun 動物好きだね～ヤブヘビだけど、猫から感染する狂犬病やキツネから感染するエノキコックスなどもあるからナデナデするときは爪で引っ掛けられたり、噛まれないよう気をつけてね

Rachel & Jun 愛知県みよし市の三好池の外周散策路にも猫ちゃんが結構いますよ。 １周4.5キロの池の淵をめぐる森の中を歩くコースです。１周でだいたい10匹ぐらいに遭遇します。 お近くに来たらお寄りください。

That's something to do a kickstarter/GoFundMe for, have a Japanese vet come over with some help for a month or so and try to round up, fix, heal, tag and name as many cats as possible (keeping enough of the younger ones un-fixed to keep the population going), potentially even putting some of the kittens up for adoption. Worthy cause.
