Not really; cats communally raise kittens and chickens, though to a lesser degree, kind of foist egg-sitting duties onto chickens lower in the pecking order so there's some degree of compatibility in their instincts and cats chase things based on their relative size rather then any particular preference for birds and rodents; if anything it's a surprise that the hens don't harm the cat since their fights for dominance tend to be a lot more extreme then the ones that cats have.

I had a female cat that had stillborn kittens. It's maternal instinct was so strong that it would catch wild animals in order to mother them. It brought home rats, a hare, a rabbit, a pukeko ( a swamp hen endemic to New Zealand ) and even a weasel. She was happy when my brother got a couple of guinea pigs that she could mother.

The hare left on it's own, and we found a nice pond in a swamp that looked like one of Monet's paintings of lilly ponds for the Pukeko after it had grown on a diet of garden snails, but the weasel was hard to relocate. We couldn't catch it. Every time it made a getaway the cat would bring it back.

Yea we have a huge male stray that would hunt bunnies all the time but when we took him in he loves are 3 bunnies and likes to sit next to them and just spend time with them in general but he still hunts and brings back wild rabbits

What a sweet chicken guardian she is. She's basically the mom of the group who is loving, but at the same time you don't want to make her mad. I busted a gut when she seemed to scold the other two chickens for fighting.😆

Those were both roosters and they were probably fighting for the top spot in the pecking order. They're LOUD little bastards when they fight, and there's usually a lot of screaming, wing slaps, and trying to rake each other with their spurs. The cat probably didn't like all the noise and it looks like she went after the one who started the fight. I'm just surprised the other roo didn't do the little wing dance.

So sweet.... We used to have a stray that camped out under our chicken coop, and eventually we were able to put him up in the coop at night to keep warm and watch over them. He was the sweetest guy, did the same with kittens for some other strays until we found everyone a home

Our Chickens were adopted by a stray cat who was fascinated by them. We started feeding the little stray and she accepted us as family. She is very protective of our Chickens. She’s chased off Birds, dogs and other cats. The chickens sometimes tease her but she still loves and protects them. 💕

The cat yes didn’t hurt them but other than fighting the cat and breaking up the fight of the roosters is the only active protection the cat did. The cat being over protective would be like him not letting anyone near the chickens or keeps hoarding them to one spot. Cat just seemed very friendly to his friends more than over protective.

What a cool cat!! It’s amazing how some animals become protective over other different animals, this is about as cool as the leopard that a cow allowed to suckle when it was a cub that lost its mother, the leopard would sneak into the village at night to visit and snuggle with the cow at night. Once discovered the leopard was trapped and relocated , but it made the trip back to that village one last time , like it knew it couldn’t keep coming after being moved so it came one last time and spent one last night with its adoptive cow mother to say goodbye. Simply amazing!

Your info is a bit wrong, only a certain small frog known as Chiasmocleis ventrimaculata lives with the tarantula in the burrow to protect the tarantula eggs from tiny enemies that the tarantula can’t fight off. While the tarantula protects the frog from big enemies.

When that chick pecked the cats eye, the cat looked down at him n was like _”I can’t believe you’ve done this!”_ British accent and all. Luckily that cat is well-liked in the chicken community…I can’t. 🤣😂

I'm amazed at what I saw, and the world seems a more beautiful place if only for a moment. Thanks for that~

Just reading the comments, this is apparently somewhat common cat behavior with chickens! As a lifelong cat owner, I'm fairly surprised by all these stories I'm reading here of "guard cats" protecting chickens.

Honestly tho how lucky is this man? He has free protection for his chickens, GOOD protection, and he literally had to do NOTHING. Some people try to get dogs to train to protect and they are STILL scared of foxes, I've seen it, but this girl would probably fight to the death. Doesnt even let the chickens fight each other. Chicken Moms to Shabang: Alright girl, we goin out tonight! Can you watch the chicks for us? Shabang: Of course! I love the little ones. Dont get too carried away now. Baby Chicks: Yay we get to stay with Aunt Sha-Sha!

I think cats are braver than dogs! Saw clips of cats who take on animals bigger than them like alligators or lions hahahah but i’m no expert. So 🤷🏽‍♀️ hahahahah

In-Laws had a Cat that herded the Free Range Chickens back into their yard on command. Certainly not the usual thing going on. It also had a chair at the dinner table and sat quietly and watched everyone eat. Never demanded anything at the table. Refusing to be awakened every AM at 5 to let the cat out, I had to go to chemical warfare on him, and show him I was not going to be abused. He got the message. Good cat. One to be proud of.
