There were a lot of ladder heroes back then who were very good on ladder but didn't have the breadth of different builds and skillsets to be really competitive in pro play. I guess it's still kind of like that now too, but like some people are really good playing one style, but in a pro match your opponent is going to know what you like to do and try to counter it, so you have to be good enough playing other styles/compositions to be able to punish your opponent for trying to counter what they thought you were going to do.

My first experience with competitive online rts games was rise of nations. I thought to myself one day "you know, you're at the point now where fighting the computer on hardest difficulty is easy, how hard could a real person be?" so I proceeded to join a 4 vs 4 match, and my teammates absolutely carried me, and I barely scraped by. The whole time everyone in the match was berating me for not having the superhuman reflexes of a snake, the way they did. I realized that day that competitive rts players are actually literally insane, and I would never be as good as I am with other genres of game.

I watched the day9 daily every night too, watched daily #100 live and it stuck with more than almost anything else I've seen before. I credit that game to a ton of life-success that I've had since then, it gave me a wonderful work ethic and a bunch of beautifully generalizable mental models. Props to SC2!
