This is the first game i played from start to finish on the game gear in 91 !! ahh the nostalgie

Castle of Illusion was the last Master System game I got as a kid before we got a Genesis. I loved this game and still played it for years later with the Power Base converter

Dave sure had an...energetic reaction to Joe's attempted shirt removal. Is there some history there?

We had the Master System version back when it was released, great game and I could complete it on one life in about 20-25 minutes back in the day.

Just before I press play to watch the video, I remembered the song. Weird when it had be that long time since I played the game.

Now THIS is the episode I was waiting for! With this and the Genesis episode it must be close to Joe's birthday. 16 but era remains the purest gaming period and this is such genuine fun. Thanks, guys.

I've never actually seen the master system version of this. Thanks Sack boys.

There's a "quick kill" for the chocolate bar boss. If you wait until he hits the wall before you chuck the block at him, he won't go through the whole Yellow Devil-esque teleportation sequence. Instead he'll punch the wall again, making another block fall down, so rinse and repeat.

22:12 It is actually possible to sorta "glitch" through that treasure chest with a well aimed butt stomp, and skip a large part of the level that way.

Way to go, another game beat! This version is not that bad and it does deserve some praise. Kudos for playing this all the way and showing the fans there are some good Master System ports out there.

The first game I properly completed. Loved this growing up.

I think the Master System version is superior for many reasons. 1. Mickey's sprite looks and animates better on MS. The Genesis sprite is just awfull, especially it's animations. 2.Level design is better on MS. 3.Controls on MS are more natural and fluid. Controls on Genesis are not tight, they are stiff. Castle of Illusion on Genesis is totally overrated. World of Illusion on the other hand would deserve all the praise Castle gets. World really looks like a Disney Cartoon and has the best coop of the 16bit era. Edit: Controls are perfectly fine and responsive btw. The problem with the unresposive feeling block pick up is in the understanding of the controls. I can't remember if you have to hold direction against the block and press the pickup button, or if you have to let go of the direction after Mickey enters "pickup state" and then press the button. A read up in the manual would probably solve this problem. Today it's expected that everything is self-explanatory in game. But not back in the day.

The mastersystem version should have higher resolution then the gamegear which will make it harder.

@THE MARTIAL ARTS CHANNEL I'm definitely not a graphics makes the game person. Graphics are as important as any other aspect of a game. I just think the exact opposite of castle and world as you. I don't see how the quality of music and sound of world is worse in any way. Graphics are definitely better in world. I also don't know of tons of bugs. I only remember some flickering issues in the last level. You also get pretty much 3 different games, depending on which character you play. Game is easier, you can like it or not. World is a fun and beautifully adventure from start to finish, especially in 2 player mode.

I like the genesis version better because it has a much spookier atmosphere. It actually gave me nightmares as a kid.

Joe went from saying this good as the sega one, the magizines were wrong, to having a field day with it and playing more than dave lol

I like this game a lot

I played the Master System version of Castle of Illusion before I even knew it existed for the Genesis. I remember always playing it and trying to finish it with my Dad way back in 1991-1992. I have never finished it on Normal but after watching this playthrough I think I might try and do it today. Then I might try and finish the Genesis version after.

i love Game Sack. These guys have such an awkward interaction with one another. a lot of nervous laughter... they're often on different wavelengths; Joe is more strict, detailed, sometimes slightly narrow minded, and cerebral while Dave comes from more of an emotional perspective... i always see Dave asserting a certain point of view and Joe will kind of invalidate him with dry logic. but u can understand where Dave was coming from.

I love the 8 Bit-versions, but i think they did a good job on all versions of CoI. Would love to see you play Land of Illusion someday in the future!

I've played it, just not seriously.

It's quite interesting seeing all the re-used assets in this version vs Land Of Illusion (I owned the latter).

Great video as ways. You guys should check out Land of Illusion. It's a Master System gem that truly builds on the previous game and takes it a step further in many aspects.

Never saw the ending to this, so that was nice! Land of Illusion for the SMS was the better Mickey game IMO

Why does that first Jungle stage look nearly identical to the Amazon level of the original Ducktales down to the types of enemies and placements and gameplay? And Duck Tales was released over a year prior to Castle of Illusion.

I loved this game when I played it back in the day. Honestly, I liked it better than the Genesis version.

For me, the Game Gear version is where it's at. Played through this game constantly back in the day and it really hurt watching you fail XD But it's the same with games you're familiar with and I never really played, so it's all good :-)

You should try Land of Illusion - they improved the sequel in every possible way.

I always chose to do the Toy Factory first just to get a forth star for all the other levels

I definitely agree with those magazines KZread mentioned. The genesis version never clicked on me, I've always liked the 8 bit version so much more. Land of Illusion is even better than Castle.

I had a SMS and then a SNES. Only got to play the Genesis version years later on emulator. I think the SMS version is the best! Oh, and Land of Illusion is even better!

My son loves it on his tablet and recently showed it to him on the PS3, which he wasn't interested in initially. He prefers the PS3 over the android purely for controls now.

The remake of The Genesis version I think is one of the best looking remakes ever made. It's a shame that the developers went out of business shortly after. The world we live in. :-(

Do Ninja Gaiden for the SMS. That's a good, underrated game that I wished came out in the US.

Just a 6-button Genesis controller.

I'd like to see you guys play Mega Man Xtreme 1 and 2 for the Game Boy Color (also known as Rockman X: Cyber Mission and Rockman X2: Soul Eraser in Japan).

The 8 bit sequel Land of Illusion is even better and has some clever set pieces.

I like the Master System version better because of the level design. More exploration is rewarded and the levels have more verticality, as well as more secrets to find. I also don't like the marble shooting.
