Castings harvest from commercial fiberglas bin

These bins are the bins we use to produce the highest quality vermicompost. We feed these bins approximately 20 yards of produce and leaf mulch to create 2 yards of fine high quality castings. This process takes about 6 months.

Great video! However I can't help but notice you are handling that material way more than necessary. I would at least move my feed cell closer to the trommel and cut out the wheelbarrow stage. A small belt/apron feeder big enough to handle one loader bucket load at a time would cut 3 steps out and cut your time by at least 33% Plus if you set the feeder speed right you could be loading the bucket out of the bed while the trommel is automatically doing the screening,.. Just a thought! Love your operation! We are actually setting up a semi large scale worm casting operation here in southern Oregon. Love the info! Thanks for sharing!!

What are the dimensions of one of those bins and how many worms would it take to get it started? Also, how do you harvest the worms without emptying the bins and do you have any idea how many worms you have at harvest? I have a pretty large garden and all the manure would ever need. I need a bin similar in size to this. Thanks for the video.

Great channel! Lots to learn. Thank you! What means the worms are gone and you need to restock from another bin? Can they escape or do they kill themselves if the food souce is little?

Both, some jump ship early and the rest die off when the food is gone.

Question. Couldn't you build the bins wide enough and with a removable end so that you can simply harvest with your scoop directly to cut down on labor hours?

These are recycled I did not build them. A little labor is good for the heart.

+NWRedworms How good is a broken back when you fall off that ledge? I really hope you built some stairs and a ledge when you moved the bin along that back wall, especially if you where my dad.

I have about 50 of these and I sell the ones that are not it use for $250. Once they are gone they are not likely to be found anywhere else.

Why not but hinges on the side of the bins so you can just scoop it up?

you are creating a lot of work during harvesting time! Before you harvest devide the container in two parts; one side dont put lettuce or leafy veg but put on the other half; keep the one with leafy veg damp but dont spray water on the other half. you will find out that most worms would have gone to the damp side with leafy green leaves. Easer isnt it?

Too much work... work smart not hard. Plus... one day you will slip on that bin and you'll be hurt. Why not make a bin where you can harvest it from the bottom? Conveyer it from there to the next operation. Makes good sense to me... unless you're doing it for exercise....

3:30 in to video: "Most of the worms are gone... we haven't fed this bin for a long time." Translation: We use the worms, then starve them to death.

I think what he meant was that they have migrated to the other end. What he's doing is horizontal migration. The end he was harvesting from was where he started the worm bin. He let the worms migrate toward the end that's closer to the camera.

you don't really starve them. You incentivize them to move where you want. This is so they don't get damaged during the process of harvesting castings.
