Casting a Yellowjacket Nest with Molten Aluminum
Ғылым және технология
Pouring molten aluminum into an under ground yellowjacket (wasp) nest. I’ve been waiting to make this video for a long time but I haven’t seen one in my yard, and in a suitable place to pour aluminum, since I posted my first video.
Yellowjackets are a very aggressive wasp that build large nests in the ground and deliver many painful stings to anyone who disturbs them. I have experienced this myself several times. They hurt and can kill people who are allergic. Needless to say, you have to get rid of them if they’re in your yard.
I melted around fifteen pounds of aluminum and most of that went in. You can see in the video that it didn’t quite fill the cavity completely. It looks like the paper nests were pushed up by the molten aluminum, so near the end I was just pouring aluminum onto a stack of paper wasp nests. I don’t think pouring more would have done much other than push those high enough to block the entrance, without adding much to the final cast.
Soon after starting the pour, smoke from the burning nest built up pressure inside and burst through the ground. It looks a little more dramatic in the video than it actually was. It did startle me a little bit, I’m not going to lie, but I wasn’t in any real danger.
Yellowjackets build nests in holes made by other animals. I knew that going in, and expected this would be an old ground squirrel hole or something similar. It actually seems to be built in an abandoned field ant colony. See my past videos to see a casting of a field ant colony. Yellowjackets don’t dig, but my understanding is that they can push the dirt around, which is why it’s more solid than an ant colony. I remember seeing a field ant colony in this area in the past and the entrance hole looked similar. I could be wrong about the species of ant but that long tunnel on the side was definitely made by ants and not a yellowjacket. The general shape also resembles an ant colony, although it has been altered by the yellowjackets and/or some intermediary animal.

This was totally satisfying. I ran over one of these nests in my yard while mowing and got stung multiple times by those little bastards. My wife was attacked and stung multiple times when she disturbed another nest in our flower garden. They are the most painful bee stings I have ever experienced, and I have been stung by every kind of bee around. The nests are totally invisible until you step on it. They are about the size of a housefly. They are even hard to see, until they are on you.

@@AnthillArt There are several KZread channels that focus on wasps and hornets, two of the more prominent being Hornet King and Wasp Hunter, and their videos are quite educational and informative about how wasp and hornet nests are built. Most often they take over ant colonies or animal burrows but they've been known to use rotted out roots too - I know that one personally as 15 years ago I had to deal with a ground nest in an oak rootball that I didn't even know was under my lawn.

I've probably been stung by these little buggers 70 times. My brother and I used to amuse ourselves teasing them when I was a kid, got swarmed a few times. Now I live in fear that my next sting will be the one to put me over the edge into shock. Glad to see you doing your part :)
Ive never been stung by a wasp but this makes me happy

Those ones probably weren’t in the nest at the time. Nests like these can send well over 100 wasps out foraging for food. When they return to a destroyed or missing nest, they get confused af and just fly around aimlessly.

When I “stumbled” upon your first fire ant “pour” video, intrigued, my first question was “I wonder what a ground nesting yellow jacket nest would look like?” Thank you for answering that. Obviously not as intricate, arguably not as beautiful as the ant colony, but still so satisfying to watch! I salute your creativity, amigo!
Imagine one yellow jacket worker just coming home from work and being like “wtf happened to my house?! And where’s my family?! 😫”
Me: seeing a wasp nest burning me: this brings a smile to my face
I stepped on a yellow jacket nest in high school. This was so incredibly satisfying to watch.
I always get so happy whenever this guy posts
Is it just me, or whenever I watch these videos, I always feel something itchy on my body, like a wasp or an ant lol
