Yep the problem with owning, or buying a house built before 1950 is that these are the types of problems you're going to run into. Video like this are much appreciated, because conventional dIY vids on home repair pretty much all assume you're working with newer houses built after pvc became the standard. Definitely among the best and most thorough old school toilet/flange replacement videos out there even after almost a decade.

When you don't have a dad to show you, youtube provides.

Great job Steve. Love to see true craftsmanship in the trades. Way to spread your skills to the young guys out there.

Hello Steven, awesome, thanks for sharing this technique, 35 years and I,ve never seen it actually done. I inherited a set of caulking irons and have never used them. I have a curved one for removing old lead I have used a few times, but always repaired with plastic. Nice job I enjoyed looking over your shoulder.

Great to see a pro at work! Old school techniques done the right way.

Great video. Great camera angles. Some people that post How-To videos don't realize that with the right camera angles, so viewers can see what you're doing, it makes learning so much easier to follow.

I've seen that style done on an old house is Mexico. Excellent how you do that style so well. Awesome video

Amazing Steve, my uncle was a plumber, old school. we had cast iron and lead pipes in our house, but I never saw him do that..kudos.

That's a real good flange replacement job. I also hate the metal between the tank and bowl!Had to learn the hard way. Worked my way from the ghetto to the 3million dollar homes. Lot of hard work paid the price loved it all.

I have been waiting since 1988 to see this. I worked for St. Mary Medical Center in Gary IN back then, was over zealous cleaning around a flange while changing a wax ring. Broke an ear off the flange. Our union plumber got mad at me, and wouldn't let me watch him put in a new flange, with lead and oakum. Thank you Steve! Great job!

Hi Steve, I'm buying a 1910 Craftsman and I can see the iron plumbing pipes. I know one toilet is slightly wobbly upstairs and I'll be taking it off to check the connection. I'm an avid watcher of your videos and you've given me and my Son a lot of knowledge from radiators and how a boiler works to how to fix a leaky toilet. Now we just need a bunch of tools, the right parts and determination! Man you are the best and your dog is cute too, btw- love that she goes with you on nice days. THANKS!!

Great video, very helpful. As far as the toilet being level, by the looks of that house, the new closet flange is now holding up the bathroom floor. I like to clean out the nipple before installing the new shutoff; we have hard water out west and a lot of old galvanized pipes. They seem to plug off near the end at the valve. You are definitely a Master Plumber out there doing it right.

Have seen these old caulking irons before and never knew how they were used. This is a lesson in time travel that has taught me something new. Also has anyone else thought that that was an new use for a spirit level.. a leg for a lavatory 🤔

thanks a lot! this is exactly what i needed. both of the blots on mine rusted to the flange and snapped off so the toilet is free flowing. i tried removing the rust, but it was so bad that i still cant get the bolts out, and even if i could i wouldnt trust the strength of the flange. after this im definitely going to look into more of your videos. keep up the good work

I'm a diyer myself!! I like your style with the crescent wrench and pipe wrench... I was taught by my neighbor a long time ago to never use wrenches that have a chance to strip or scratch your plumbing parts etc!!! Some people with ocd might bitch he said lol!!! No channel locks lol... I wish he was still alive today for me to thx him!! My family careers are in the corporate world as is mine but, I really enjoy doing wood working, plumbing, whole house remodeling etc...I saved thousands with what my neighbor taught me!!! I've made some money doing diy things on the side!!! This is a great video, Ive learned something new!!!

Watched it out and gotta say cool vid. I've never came across a cast flange before in Canada. Have came across many a lead stub and had to 30/70 rebuild them over the years to set a new mounting flange. Have experienced pouring horizontal and vertical lead oakum joints, but never came across a toilet flange here, thanks

First Professional plumber I have seen on You Tube. My Plumber did the same thing when my old cast iron flange broke on my new American standard toilet. IKoehler is pretty much junk IMO. I have Moen fixtures. Great video and that should last a long time. Couldn't exactly see my plumber do it because my bath is small.Thanks ! Other videos were nothing but patches and quick fixes

Hey thanks allot for your videos. I also live in Texas (with iron pipes) and had to install a wax seal. Thankfully due to watching this and then researching more afterward I did not put in a wax ring with the plastic insert. But you know what? That was what caused my problem. Fortunately my iron flange was in good shape but if I hadn't seen your video I would never have known about the problems the wax ring with inserts cause. Yep, the old school plumbers all mirror what you said and I went wax seal only, worked like a charm. A big Thank You! for teaching us DIY'ers something important.

I don't understand the difference between using this method with the cast iron replacement flange/the oakum/melted lead, and using the PVC replacement flange on the cast iron piping. Thank you, Mr. Lavinmoniere for walking me through this and with your other vids.

that was classic. maybe replace the escutcheon too and caulking to floor. funny too. keep them coming. thanks
