According to service manual frequency response on your Kenwood KX-3510 is 30Hz to 18kHz (on Metal tape)... sorry but there is no quality on this deck even if you fixed it, for comparison you will have to buy a high end deck to get the best quality from a cassette.

If you record your own they will outperform vinyl. Even type 1. Recording your own is part of the fun. I avoid pre-records for the most part. That said, in this video there is definitely something wrong. Sounds like bad azimuth to me. Could be the deck, but sometimes pre records can have bad azimuth, so it could be the tape.

Hmm. Something doesn't sound right with the cassette version. I collect cassettes, pre-recorded and empty/recordable ones, and have a low-end/mid-end cassette deck. I recorded the cassette version audio from this video into my audio editing software, and noticed a line around 6khz, which could mean an uncleaned tape head/tape path, azimuth problem or incorrect bias settings. Your deck is a 3-head (I think), which has an auto-calibration system in it, and auto calibrates azimuth and bias for the inserted cassette. You have to do this for every cassette, before playing it. Maybe you know this already, and did it before recording, I don't know :D EDIT: checked online, no, your deck is a 2-head only, like mine, but yours is more modern, and has more settings such as: auto-bias. So that's cool

The problem with pre-recorded cassettes is that there is wide variation in the quality of sound from one tape to another. These tapes were done in batches, reusing the same master tape, over and over at high speeds. Quality control was also quite poor. However, making good quality recordings onto high quality blank cassette tape can produce exceptionally good sound. Unfortunately, the music industry regarded cassettes as more of a disposable, 'toy' format and didn't put in the care needed to insure better overall sound quality from one batch of tapes to another. Much better quality control systems were put in place for pre-recorded reel-to-reel tapes, as this format was taken more seriously the industry and consumers alike. Good video!

Hi Emma, tape decks require knowledge how to properly clean them, maintain in a good shape and actually use for playback. Your tape was sounding awful due to issues, not because tape sound is bad. That kind of videos needs to be better prepared. BTW, I liked how you structured and narrated the video. Good luck with your channel :)

Besides clean & demag tape deck, if the tape were Chrome or other better tape formulation and HX Pro recorded, some may prefer its sound. It is easy to record vinyl/cd to cassette at home and do a blind ABX and have most/all listeners unable to discern difference. Nothing new here. It has always been known that most commercially recorded cassette tapes released prior to the 80s, maybe 1985 or so, are poor physical and recording quality. But higher quality cassettes started appearing in the mid 80s onwards- good build quality with screws in the case, Chrome and other better tape types, HX-Pro and/or other "Spectral" recording methods.

You forgot to mention that dolby S, as well as Bang & Olufsen (+Dolby labs) invented HX-Pro (Head room extension Pro, and Tandbergs Dyneq and Actilinear systems. And then some. All giving better treble and sound in general. Emma: get a better cassette player. Thanks for sharing. Kind regards.

Hi! I think something may be wrong with the deck. It sounds like the playback head is misaligned (azimuth) or need cleaning. Try cleaning first. Head alignment requires equipment, so you may have to bring it to someone who can repair cassette decks. Even an inexpensive deck sounds better than your current experience. The highs are missing, and even with type I tape, you should still be able to get a high as 17 Khz. Check this out: kzread.info/dash/bejne/kZ-NtbSmdZncXZs.html

That tape doesn't sound good. Overal vinyl sounds better than a pre-recorded cassette. Pre-recorded tapes can sound very good to very bad, best are those recorded on chrome tapes. If you have the right cassette/cassette deck combination it can sound marvelous and without clicks and other noises unless they were there when recorded, recorded cd's sound very good on good tapes.. For a fair comparison use a deck with a calibration possibility, use a good chrome or metal tape and record an lp. Some old tapes sound great but other oldies sound (very)bad, think it has something to do with tape-aging and a deck that wasn't that good or had heads that weren't good aligned. My worst tape is the Scotch high energy... tapeheads needs to be cleaned every minute. Tapes from the mid 8os till late 90s sound good, looks like decks and tapes became better, even the ferro tapes. My Pioneer CT-W606DR from 1997 sounds great.

Listen darling, long before you were born, I compared both, yes then already on the high end level. First via internet, no one can judge a thing in comparing sound quality. Before digital reproduction, most used cassette recording, to copy vinyl originals from friends, or your own records to use in a car or walkman. No matter how much money one spend, in those years, it never matched the original in quality. I had a Luxman 5K50 to do this. Which was 4500,--- in the Netherlands then (1978). If idiots want to revive cassettes, in my opinion, ludicrous. As burning any recording on a CD or loading it on a USB stick, will provide anyone with far better quality. Vinyl records is a complete different story. A record on a high quality player, which is not a JVC, can compete with any digital system. Ps, I am objective, when I notice, both cassettes and CD's are Dutch inventions.

"A record on a high quality player, which is not a JVC, can compete with any digital system" That is not correct. The dynamic range of vinyl is limitted to 60 dB. That is a limitation of the media which even the best player could not change. CD allows up to 96 dB dynamic range. CDs also have a perfect channel separation which vinyl never could provide - especially on low bass there it is impossible to cut that in stereo on a vinyl master. And CDs are not a pure dutch invention - the technology was developed by Sony and Phillips together.
