Casio CZ101 - Part 2 - making some sounds and dodgy midi

Музыка

In part 2 we take more of a deep dive into the CZ101 and Phase Distortion. we have a listen to some presets, making some patches, look at some patch editing software and load in some sounds from the internet. As well as all of that we make (try) to make some tunes using the the CZ101's multitimbral midi capabilities. If you haven't seen part 1, that is all about fixing the keyboard. Both video's are probably way to long and often stray from the point but maybe thats your kinda thing!
If you enjoyed please give a thumbs up and consider a sub!

    Awesome video and info! Bummer on the midi issues. Starting to see that the further back you go with great sounding synths, the less multitimbral and midi capabilities there are. Still a great synth :).

    Yeah midi implementation on mid 80s synths is pretty simple generally, it was really early days! but didn't take long for things to become more fully featured

    I wish that Casio would revisit the CZ series and reissue updated versions. They'd give Korg a run for their money.

    yeah that would be a cool product, like the yamaha reface or roland boutique stuff, make sound editing more intuitive and like you mentioned in your other comment, add fx

    that software doesn't work because the cz line didnt support midi-controlled parameter changing, unfortunately

    if you check the manual, no matter which model of cz, there's a section that always shows the midi-programmable settings and they never include anything pertaining to the operators. i'm not sure if it was a cost cutting measure or they hadn't figured out how to do it but it's a shortcoming of the entire cz line

    you can transmit patches via system exclusive messages, thats basically what the programs do but yeah the midi is pretty limited it was still early days for midi though

    Really nice Video(s)!!!. Did you program the sound on 38:16 (second tune) on your own or is this a preset of the CZ?

    Lovely sounding retro synth but not easy to find one in good condition for under three hundred quid. Sounds nicer than a DX IMO The Virtual CZ plugin supposedly makes a very good editor.

    @@bonzomusik Or maybe whatever midi interface you got is a bit crap. I had a cheapo USB to Midi cable to connect mt CZ101 t my mac (though I was running MuseScore rather than Logic) and it worked OK, but wasn't 100% reliable, seemed a bit unstable if sending more than 4 notes simultaneuously and introduced a bit of extra noise into the system. Plus the build quality didn't strike me as likely to hold up for long. I decided to treat myself to a nicer USB to Midi interface from a name brand, and it was awful. I had the problems you had here, only sending one Midi event at a time, plus dropped notes, massive latency, and it wouldn't send note-off information, so the Handel piece I'm working on now sounded very experimental. I went back to the cheapo cable and it all worked fine as long as I kept it to four voices at a time. I found the noise could be greatly reduced by disconnecting the Midi out from the CZ.

    @@bonzomusik Midi is definitely a little wonky on the 101 (I gather the 3000s and 5000s got a upgrade). I updated my workflow on Musescore (using .mid files rather than full score files) and got a great improvement on reliability. I'm consistently getting full 4 voice polyphony now (you can see an example in my latest vid). I wonder if it's because more modern Midi setups (DAWs, controller keyboards, etc) overload the CZ with additional info (velocity, etc) than it's ickle brain can handle. Have you tried hitting your CZ's reset button?

  • @bonzomusik

    @bonzomusik

    6 ай бұрын

    @@DylanPank71 yeah I did try the reset button, Ive actually sold the CZ on now to make way for new projects but yeah would be interesting to try it out with an old midi sequencer, like you say it could be getting overloaded by excess midi stuff from modern midi implementation.
