How to program the Casio CZ Series from the CZ-101 to the CZ-1
hyperfollow.com/scififunk/
A Step-by-step tutorial for programming the Casio CZ Series of Vintage Synthesizers. I explain what each Pot and Slider does on the synthesizer and how they interact to create sound.
This series demonstrates how the synth works at a high level, enough to get you making sounds. For an in-depth look at programming the Synth as a whole. Please refer to my advanced programming series.

00:00 Introduction demo playing with settings that can easily be tweaked live.
03:30 All the CZ synths are basically the same architecture. The CZ-1 is the best model as it is velocity-sensitive.
04:16 Articles from the period explaining how to program the CZ-101.
04:58 The essence of Phase Distortion programming.
05:30 All 8 basic waveforms that start sound on a Casio CZ-101 etc.
06:50 How the synth sound chain hangs together (DCO, DCW, DCA)
07:48 Line select. How the oscillators work together. This is an important setting.
08:20 Noise and Ring modulator, plus detune, examples of using them with line select.
Please watch the whole video to make sense of the chapters.
The Casio CZ-101 was my very first poly synth bought way back in 1985.
Please see my other tutorials where I explain similar principles on other Vintage synths like-
ROLAND SH-101
CASIO CZ-101/1000/3000/5000/1
PROTEUS 2000
ROLAND SVC-350 Vocoder
Also, drum machines like
EMU SP-12
ROLAND TR-808
Where I can't get access to the kit be sure I have it in Virtual format, and I'll explain all there. Synths that are just too expensive can be covered there like
ELKA SYNTHEX
SEQUENTIAL CIRCUITS PROPHET 5
OBERHIEM MATRIX 12
EMU EMULATOR 2
PPG WAVE
OSCAR
I've programmed them all.

Thanks for this. CZ-1 was my first synth too way back in the 1980s (still have it, still works)!

Good choice! Also congrats on it still working. Mine needs some attention since recording this. However I will shortly release another programming series using plug-in boutiques Casio cz plug-in. It makes programming so much quicker and visual. Thanks for the sub, you won’t be disappointed with my new series, out soon.

When you are young you have forever. Then suddenly you are not young anymore, but it’s ok, still plent of time to achieve your goals. Then in a blink of an eye there isn’t much time left, then I guess you wake up and you are proper old. The moral of the story is.. don’t waste time, go for everything you want every day. Good luck, I hope your music works out for you.

I agree the cz-1 is the best. I actully have a cz-101 and a cz-230 the 230 is presents i think. These are great programing tutorials. Good job bro!

Thank you man. I’m either going to do a Juno-106 one or a D-50 one next. My Juno is currently out of action so it would be via a plug-in. I’m also going to do some chord studies too.

Yes! Why? Because it’s the only one in the series with velocity sensitivity. Put that on the filters and it’s a game changer, if you like to play rather than program. Vs DX7 et Al it’s a different sound.

Also please note the casios are digital . However due to the layout you’ll be at home programming it as it feels like working with an analogue dcos nit vcos etc.

@@scififunk Yeah, I like that it's more simple to program it saves time. but with fm synthesis, it takes longer to program for me.

Agreed. FM is very hard to visualise in your mind, vs traditional programming.
