Casio CT-6000 - Digitally Controlled Analogue Synth Loveliness - JDSC Reviews

Auto Harmonise! Octaves! Pitch Bends! Glissando! Big Vintage Brass stuff! Lots of Waffling! That's basically this entire video summed up. This keyboard is built like a tank and a joy to play. Massively underrated!
All content created by me and therefore copyrighted so, although to be honest you could probably copy what I played in this and write a song and I'd never know...

Lovely sounds from this keyboard. Amazing that it has some form of aftertouch for swells. I like Casio's from this period before all the sounds were PCM-based. This certainly sounds better than my Casio MT-100 though that one has a lovely personality all its own. Thanks for sharing this.

The big CZ's, the FZ samplers and the VZ's were all pro level Casio synths that came after the CT-6000. Also don't forget the HT range from the late 80's, that used preset waves with amp envelopes and an actual analogue filter (filters in the case of the HT-6000).

This keyboard is not analogue at all! It only layers digital stairwaves (including digital envelope) from 3 different sound ICs through fixed analogue filters. It is a successor of consonant-vowel synthesis (like in Casio MT-65), only with velocity capable digital hardware. Also rhythm is not analogue but uses digital blip percussion (very lowres digital waveforms) with fixed filters.

I have this keyboard but mine has the too low volume to the rhythm section issue. I had one that only the trumpet sound worked and it is quite the beast. Very robust and I decided to upgrade the keybed to the heavier FZ1/VZ1 semi lead weighted keybed with the felt strip after touch strip that IS variable since it is a variable pressure resistor(tie to the mod circuit that controls vibrato). Now the unison mode with legato monophonic play is my favorite but the other modes with chords, not so much. The Harpsichord sound is one of my favorites on this keyboard as it is a bit hard hitting for my kind f music. The sounds on this are found in a lesser degree, on the CPS201. Both the rhythm section sounds and melody sounds. Casio built good keyboards in the early 80s.. Sad how they have gone so cheesy and plastic but it is what it is.

@0.46 - "technically Casio's first and only potentially properly professional grade synthesizer". Don't forget the big pro grade Casios of the 1980's that came after the 1984 CT-6000! The Casio CZ 3000/ 5000/ 1, FZ-1 (and FZ-10M/ FZ-20M rack modules), plus VZ-1 (and VZ-8M/ VZ-10M modules) were all professional grade actual synths. You could also add the later MZ-2000 (though that was more of an arranger) and also the more recent XW-P1 and XW-G1 synths as professional grade too. The CT6000 was Casio's top level keyboard of 1984, though being a pre-set instrument it was more a high end consumer keyboard, or possibly a "pro-sumer" level board. To be professional grade in 1984, it would have had to compete with the Roland Juno 106, Korg DW-6000 and Yamaha DX-7. As much as I love the CT6000 for what it is, it is not at the level of those boards. Great video nonetheless, and thanks for highlighting this underrated keyboard!

I bought one of these synthesizer keyboards from a charity shop, where I'd just popped in to sift through their vinyl LPs, for £38 in November 2018, about two weeks before a mate of mine asked if I wanted to form a Depeche Mode tribute band, without even knowing that I'd even bought a keyboard (Yes, Debeste Mode are up and running!). I believe this was Casio's only professional synthesizer keyboard, and can be used for gigging. It is really good & versatile, sounds great (in an 80s sort of way) and it works perfectly, plus it can be used as a midi controller, too. Definitely recommended, if you can find one that's in good working order!

@@ChasD That was my thought - this isn't a synth, though it is using a synth engine to create the sounds. I actually think the CT-1000P was Casio's first synthesizer as you could actually create new sounds with it. This is not to say the CT-6000 isn't useful for pro play, just don't expect to be adjusting filters (or other parameters) in real-time. I think the most interesting thing about the CT-6000 is the glissando.

@@cyberyogicowindler2448 I actually have now owned one for years. It is a bit of a one trick pony. While it offers some sound design , it’s all based on sine waves with no filter settings. That said, you can coax some lovely sounds out of it. I personally like some of the sparkly tones one can get. The arpeggiator, it’s more like a short sequencer is, weird to program. It can produce some nice patterns though. Unfortunately you can’t clock it to anything else. If someone knows someone that has done that, drops me a note. To me it’s the only serious drawback for this interesting keyboard. Evidently there was a MIDI. retrofit made by an English company, but it doesn’t appear many were sold. I’ve never seen one for sale or a 1000P with one installed. I’d be curious if it brought MIDI clock in or out.

While I enjoyed the video, I just wanted to say that's a home keyboard and Casio has released MANY Pro-level synths throughout history: the awesome CZ series, the less successful VZ series, The HT series--arguably Casio's first attempt at an Arranger/workstation, and the FZ Pro-level sampler. That's to say nothing of their recent resurgence in the modern market.

It only layers digital stairwaves (including digital envelope) from 3 different sound ICs through fixed analogue filters. Neither. It's digital using low resolution waveforms. The chorus is analog and it has some fixed lowpass filters, but nothing like a VCO, VCF or VCA. The later Casiotone 5500 and 6500 use phase distortion. The HT-6000 has polyphonic VCFs, but Casio never made anything like an analog synth.
