Casio BM 500W Weather Station

Ғылым және технология

A demonstration of the features of my Casio BM-500W Weather Station Barometer watch from 1992. I've owned it since new back in the 90s and wore it full time for years working on oil rigs as well as using it for recreational scuba diving and caving. I just put 2 new batteries in it and it still works brilliantly. It even has the original strap.

I bought this watch when new: My father had given me $100 for my birthday, and I picked this up for $89 plus tax. One of the reasons I wanted it was for the altimeter, to use it as a navigational tool. Back before GPS was in everyone's hand... and watch... I would use the altimeter along with a paper topographic map to help with orienteering. For instance, if I was on a marked trail that cut through several topo lines of altitude, I would immediately know where I was on the trail, sometimes within only a few feet. I also wore it snorkeling... really wore it all the time for several years. It is a wonderful watch. Like others here, I find it odd that yours is STILL the only description and review of this watch on KZread. I had seen it a few years ago, and just came back to look again. Nothing else, that I can find. Anyway, it is not working. A similar thing happened to me, that happened to @webvan94 in this thread: I put new batteries in it, and the display does not come on. I reset it according to the instructions, and took out and reinstalled the batteries, but it is still dead. Well, at least the last time I tried to get it going, several years ago. But I've been meaning to tackle the problem again, and hope to try soon. It would be fun and nostalgic to see if I can use it again.

I also found the features useful, using it for scuba diving and paragliding. It was my main watch for several years.

Got mine in 1992 in Sharjah ! Still lookg like new really ;-) Anyway I came here because after putting in some new 399 batteries I first got a blank screen and the backlight always on...took them out, back in and then got all the segments turned on with no effect of the buttons. Didn't look good but after taking the batteries out a few times I finally got the familiar 12:00:00 display, phew ! Anyway I thought it might help someone down the road.

I am having the exact same problem right now with mine, and your fix doesnt seem to help. The metal piece with the green plastic screen, do you have it on the bottom battery or the top one that is right under the DO NOT TURN text? I have seen pictures on bith and am a bit confused...

I have a Casio BM100 WJ and the sensor is not working. Do you think a Casio BM500 module 943 sensor can serve? They have the same manual.

Hello how do you change the 2 new batteries? I cannot find a way to do it, there is a little spring in each slot but isnt coming off, do you have a link to a guide for it? thanks Angelo

Each battery has a sprung metal piece holding it in. The metal pieces loop over plastic tabs at either end. One end of each metal piece has a metal bit sticking out to allow you to get a small screwdriver behind to prise it off the plastic tab and the metal piece should come free. I have found at this age that the metal pieces can lose their spring and need a bit of bending before refitting to ensure they don't fall off again.

thank you very much, I will try this right now, one of the 2 batteries have a plastic protection above it, do I need to replace the plastic protection after setting the new battery or I can leave it off?

If this is plastic protection that came with the battery then it can be left off. The watch should have a big white circular plastic protector between the movement and the caseback.

i keep getting a negative altitude on mine, is there a way to reset or recalibrate?

  • @ChromeFreeDisco

The indicated altitude will vary as the atmospheric pressure changes day to day, or even over the course of the day if the weather is changeable. It needs to be reset prior to a known altitude before beginning to measure any changes. You can do this in the altitude mode by pressing the set button in then adjusting it.

ahhh gotcha, so i need to switch modes right before jump out the plane or it will just be altering to the last ponit it was set at. is there a way to tell it im at 11,000 and it can adjust to it?

  • @ChromeFreeDisco

    @ChromeFreeDisco

Yes you can adjust it to other values than 0. However if you're going up in an airliner it won't tell you the plane's true altitude as the cabin is pressurised - and the alitmeter works on air pressure.

That's cool then. When you get to the flying field just put it in altitude mode, then press and hold the Adjust button till the numbers flash, then use the Light and Tendency buttons to adjust the altitude up or down.
