@@saftpackerlMainly it was Sellers being the problem. Yes, Orson Welles had an ego the size of Orson Welles, but he was professional with everyone involved who took the film seriously. It was only Sellers’s shenanigans that he couldn’t put up with. Still, Welles didn’t try to bring the production to a halt like Sellers did. Sellers acted like a baby and Welles goaded him with comments that showed him that he was far beyond being intimidated. To think that it all started because Peter Sellers was trying to impress Princess Margaret and she instead spent the entire evening catching up with Orson Welles whom she was delighted to see, having met decades prior. Pure jealousy by a mentally unstable Peter Sellers. Orson walked away laughing and Peter Sellers was fired.

  • @ricarleite

He took the job under the impression it was a serious Bond film - and the amount of footage they took of him was actually serious. He also demanded to be allowed to do a magic trick in the film, which he did. However this film was a clusterfuck of a mess, several directors shooting different material, lack of consistent tone and plot. Peter Sellers originally wanted to actually PLAY Bond seriously, replacing Sean Connery. Then he settled on a humorous, light Bond (kinda like Roger Moore did), but he walked away when he realized the movie was becoming a mess.

The game is _Chemin de Fer_ ("Railroad"), a variant of Baccarat that uses a "shoe" (card dispenser) filled with 6 decks rather than 8. Between 8 to 12 players can play (2 players and 6 to 10 bettors). One player is the _banque_ ("Bank"; the player with the "shoe", or dealer) and the other is the _ponte_ ("clutch [of eggs]" or "spratling"; the player), who plays against the banker. The _croupier_ ("caller") represents the House; he passes out the cards from the dealer, calls out their value when they are revealed, and declares the winner. The other players can bet on or against either player. (Technically the player and the bettors are collectively called the _pontes_ , but the croupier uses the word _ponte_ when calling play to mean the player playing opposite the _banque_ .) The pip cards (2 through 9 of a suit) are worth face value (2 through 9 points) and the Ace (because it has only 1 pip) is worth 1 point. The 10, Jack, Queen and King are worth 10 points; since values higher than 9 are subtracted from 10, they are all worth 0 (10-10 = 0). Jokers are worthless and are removed before play. Two cards each are drawn for the _ponte_ and the _banque_ and presented by the _croupier_ with a long paddle called a _pallet_ . Each player has a chance to draw a third card if they so wish, with the _ponte_ drawing first or standing and the _banque_ having the option of standing or drawing. The objective is to have the highest sum of cards from 1 to 9. The automatic winning hand is either a sum of 8 ( _huit_ [French > "eight"], AKA _La Petite_ [French > "the Small"], the second highest possible sum) or 9 ( _neuf_ [French > "nine"], AKA _Le Grande_ [French > "the Large"], the highest possible sum). A sum higher than 9 has two digits and is worth the ones column in its sum (example: 2+3+7 = 12; 12 -10 = 2). _Baccarat_ (Italian = _baccara_ > "table or altar of Bacchus"), a sum of 0 or 10, is the worst hand. _Égalité_ ("Equality", or "tie") is when the two players have a tie result. If a bettor chose that result, it pays out 8 to 1. Otherwise everyone's bets stay where they are and a new hand is played. _Banco_ is when one or more of the bettors cries Banco before the hands are revealed, meaning they are _going all in_ (betting their entire stake against the _banque's_ hand). If there is more than one bettor calling Banco, then the bettor closest counter-clockwise to the _banque_ is called the _Banco Primo_ . If the Banco or Banco Primo succeeds and beats the _banque_ , then the shoe is passed to them and they become the new _banque_ . If the bet fails, the bettors lose their stake and have to leave the table.

The next hand ( 01:05 - 01:52 ) had Evelyn Tremble stand and bluff on 5 (3+2), unnerving LeChiffre into hitting on 5 (3+2) and drawing a 5 for a total of 10 (3+2+5 = 10; 10 - 10 = 0), scoring _Baccarat_ . According to imdb, “Some biographies of Peter Sellers suggest that he took the role of Bond to heart and was annoyed at the decision to make the film a comedy, as he wanted to play Bond straight. This is illustrated in somewhat fictionalised form in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2004), based on the biography by Roger Lewis, who has claimed that Sellers kept rewriting and improvising scenes himself to make them play seriously. This story is in agreement with the observation that the only parts of the film close to the book are the ones featuring Sellers and Orson Welles.”

The advantage of _Chemin de Fer_ type Baccarat for a casino is that the House only arbitrates; the _banque_ makes good all bets. The _banque_ and the players ("punters"; [French > _pontes_ ], [Spanish / Italian > _puntos_ ]) also have to pay a small fee (the _cagnotte_ , or "jackpot") to the House. This is either an agreed upon sum in advance (the "buy in" fee) or a fixed small percentage of each winning hand. Sums are drawn from it to round up the pot. When play ends for the evening, the remainder is claimed by the casino as their fee. When the _banque_ retires or cannot cover any more bets, the shoe is passed counter-clockwise to the next player, who then becomes the new _banque_ .
