CASE-O-MATIC CASE TRACTOR COMPANY 1960 PRODUCT LINE FILM 86254

Support Our Channel : / periscopefilm
Made to launch the 1960 product year, CIRCLE OF CONFIDENCE shows the Case Corporation's full line of tractors and farm equipment. The premiere of the "easiest to drive", "easiest to work" machines was extremely successful, with over $150 million in pre-orders placed for Case equipment between 1958-1960.
The Case Corporation was a manufacturer of construction equipment and agricultural equipment. Founded by Jerome I. Case as the J.I. Case Threshing Machine Company, it operated under that name for most of a century. For another 66 years it was the J.I. Case Company, and was often called simply Case. In the late 19th century, Case was one of America's largest builders of steam engines, producing self-propelled portable engines, traction engines and steam tractors. It was a major producer of threshing machines and other harvesting equipment. In the 20th century, Case was among the 10 largest builders of farm tractors for many years. In the 1950s its construction equipment line became its primary focus, with agricultural business second.
Founded by Jerome I. Case in 1844 as the J.I. Case Threshing Machine Company, the company operated under that name for most of a century, until 1928. In some of its advertisements the name was styled J.I. Case T.M. Co. for short. Another business founded by Jerome I. Case, the J.I. Case Plow Works, was an independent business. When the Plow Works was bought by Massey-Harris in 1928, the latter sold the name rights to the J.I. Case Threshing Machine Company, which reincorporated as the J.I. Case Company. That company, which became majority-owned by Tenneco in 1967 and a wholly owned subsidiary in 1970, was often called by the simple brand name Case.
Case's corporate entities and brands changed repeatedly in the 1980s and 1990s. When its corporate parent, Tenneco, bought International Harvester's agricultural equipment division and merged it into Case, the J.I. Case Company continued, but it began using the Case IH brand. In the 1990s it changed names several more times (each name including "Case") before its merger into CNH Global ended its history as a distinct entity. Various CNH brands continue to make use of the Case name, such as Case CE and Case IH.

I'm 80 yrs old and this NewsReel format really transports me back to the 50s and 60s. A good time to be an American. And Case's development rushing to the demand of energy to build America's exonomy and production was as good as the War Effort. Americans were a true force. Today that is all lost. Makes me sad. Sincerly Dandahermit

Cool design from the golden age in tractor engineering. Imagine what kind of logistics it took back in the 1960s to get an event like that put on without the modern ease of communication and tracking with computers. Same goes for the guys engineering things with draft tables and their minds and not having to plug things into a computer to model potential outcomes. Not that computers don't have a place. Just pretty impressive what they came up with.

My Granddad and Uncles were great men, and they drove Case tractors. Some of my most favorite memories of being a kid in the 60’s and a teenager in the 70’s are from the seat of a Case 400 or a Case 1030 comfort king. This sounds of those Case tractors really brings me back.

My Granddad and uncle had a Case 300, a 800 Case o matic gas, a 930 comfort king, and a 1070 diesel with a cab. The other ones had sun umbrellas, remember those? From the middle to late 60's when I was a kid. I was born in 1958, when this film was made. Every time I heard one of those fire up, I was right there ridding on the fender with my uncle. The first tractor I ever drove was their Case 800 Case o matic. I couldn't even drive a car yet. Some of the best times of my life on their dairy farm. They lived on a gravel road between 2 county hi ways. One where you might see two cars go by in a whole day! Just my grand parents my uncle and me. No kids to play with but I didn't care, helping with chores, milking the cows, bailing hay, doing field work and anything else. When your a real young kid and you try your best to do a mans job.....it makes you feel like a man. I loved it. Wish I had a time machine!

Yup! dad owned and we ran an 830 Case with Case o matic. Worked awesome and never had an issue with the Transmission. After many years we went to a 9600 Ford for our main tractor but that old Case worked great. The engine finally wore right out so we used it a parts tractor for a 730 case still working on the farm today. The 730 has been to hell and back so many times it knows the road itself. Field work we put it through was just harrows, stone picker, rock rake and such but that one had the front end loader. We couldn't afford to get in a backhoe so dad dug the lagoon and 100 yards of 12' deep trench to it, all with that loader. When I say hell and back i mean hell and back It functioned as our loader , our cat, our pail loader and our backhoe. Let's see the new shit they sell ya now a days do as much for as many years. Not a chance in hell!

My uncle had an 830 case o matic for years. It was a loader and general use tractor. Once you figured out how to use it and lowered the idle a little bit, it was a great loader tractor. With a high idle it was jerky. For the times, it was a decent tractor. Thanks for sharing the great video.

I really like this presentation. Narration and music as well as the film footage is just right. Very factual too. This film footage is far better than todays farm equipment films where they play so much loud heavy rock style music which belongs in big city night clubs. That's not suitable for farm equipment film presentations.

The hope and the confidence and the enthusiasm in those days was incredible. Of the 6000 dealers they flew to the Bahamas, each one placed an order on the spot of $58333.33! In 1959! That would have almost been the cost of 4 new houses each!

I had a lot of hours on a Case 700 diesel (no Caseomatic). My uncle had bought it new in 59 or 60. It was a great tractor. After about 12 years they had to replace 5th gear. That was the gear that we usually farmed with. Case-o-matic was new and he was afraid of it at the time.

The neighbors had a 300, 600, and 700 while I was growing up. These tractors worked really well and were not young when I used them in the late 70s and early 80s. If you take care of them and keep them in the barn when not in use, they last a long time. In the early 80's the 600 was traded for a 1200 unit. The Dave Brown branded tractor did not work well, but it was quickly replaced by a Case branded 1200.

Man love these old promotional videos. While I am a Deere man I still like any farm machinery promos Especially these from the good old days. I mean today could a tractor manufacture go in and destroy a forest on an island just to display their tractors?? I think not, the tree hugging hippies would be all a stir! But the best of all are the testimonials . I always wonder about those folks and how they felt 5-10-15 years after the new purchase.

CASE IS MY FAVORITE BACK IN THESE DAYS BUT AS I WATCH THIS VIDEO THE SECOND TIME , SOMETHING I CAUGHT THIS TIME IS WRONG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO THINGS WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT BUT DO IT FAIRLY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MY FATHER BOUGHT A NEW 530 CASE IN 1960 FROM MY FUTURE FATHER-IN-LAW BECAUSE HE LIKED CASE TRACTORS FOR WHAT THEY WERE ! HE OWNED A CASE TRACTOR DEALERSHIP I MARRIED ONE OF ISLAND LINDSEY'S DAUGHTERS OCTOBER 7th , 1961 ! I COULDN'T HELP NOTICING , THAT ON THE FIRST OF THE FILM WHEN THEY WERE IN TUG OF WAR WITH OTHER TRACTORS , OTHER TRACTORS WOULD DRAG THE CASE BACKWARDS WHILE IT WAS SPINNING FORWARD BUT WHEN THE CASE STARTED DRAGGING THE OTHER TRACTOR BACKWARD , THE OTHER TRACTOR WAS NOT PULLED BACKWARD BY THE CASE WHILE THE OTHER TRACTOR WAS SPINNING FORWARD BUT IT'S WHEELS WERE ROLLING BACKWARDS INSTEAD OF TURNING FORWARD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED , THERE WAS REALLY NO TUG OF WAR TO IT AND THIS IS DECEIVING AND I BELIEVE SOME , IF NOT ALL , THE FARMERS TESTAMONIES WERE BEING READ OFF OF POWER POINT SLIDES , Look at your audience, not your slides. The biggest reason you shouldn't be reading your slides is that if you are, you're not looking at your audience. People won't connect with whatever story you are telling !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Ernest E. Kenneth N. Shortlidge The Case-IH came together in the fall of 1984 when IH decided to sell their farm equipment side of their business to Case. The IH dealers were dismayed and really taken back at the announcement. Then over the next year the Case Company made a lot of changes in dealers. Many a Case dealer had their dealer franchise given to an IH dealer. Many farmers couldn't understand that however it was based in many instances on the one that had the better financial balance sheet.

Thanks for the info. I was able to find more information by Googling IH, Case, NH etc. Bottom line, Tenneco seems to have saved both Case & IH with timely cash, and things improved from there. Ironically CNH appears to be three times as valuable as Tenneco today. Just shows the difference management makes, which was IH's problem.

Kenneth N. Shortlidge Further to all this a lot more has happened in the last number of years. Case to-day is a part of the Fiat. It is set up as a different entity from Fiat Chrysler. Prior to this happening I believe it was Fiat that too over New Holland and the farm equipment side of Ford. I'm not up to-date on the timeline of these events. Perhaps another reader may read this and fill us in on how and when all this went together.

@@observant98 Fiat had a share in NH, and later expanded that share to make it into CNHI, and it is the same fiat that owns fiat Chrysler. Ford kinda was looking for a buyer for it's ag division(NH and Versatile) and Fiat was a partial buyer(explained more in Versatile's book). When CIH and NH merged, Versatile was sold off due to anti trust issues(CIH didn't want to sell Steiger off as the quadtrack was coming down the line) Case would have been gone in the 50s/60s if not for tenneco, and again if not for IH in the 80s, as Tenneco was to sell them off in the next few years if they didn't turn a profit. IH if they could have figured out how to manage and how to put money into R&D earlier could have been fine and around today(as a whole company not split like today)

Actually the torque converter does give CASE an advantage. It is very good for starting out under load or dealing with varying field conditions. When ever a torque converter experiences any slippage it produces torque multiplication up until lockup speed which has the effect of shifting to a lower gear. These tractors would be good dead pulls at tractor pulls. After the war one small tractor builder equipped their tractor with a fluid coupling from Chrysler. It was claimed that this tractor would star out an move a railroad car. As for out pulling that 720 I think it would start spinning.

My uncle inherited one from his wife’s side of the family. They tried using it but it did nothing but slip the tranny/torque converter. Not sure how those case-o-matics work and I don’t wanna know. He sold it to the neighbor. Pos!

Your tractor may have a torque converter problem. If the stator spins in both directions the sprag or overrunning clutch is not preventing the stator from turning in a clockwise direction. In operation the pump (front member). throw oil toward the locked stator which has slanted vanes which in turn spin the oil in a CW direction before it strikes the turbine (driven member). This spinning oil gives torque multiplication to the converter. Sure the tractor will run without a stator but it will be very sluggish.
