My grandfather had three 4020's once. Had two early model power shift models, then one got damaged and traded for a 1969 4020 diesel wide front synchro model. They were all wide front, my favorite was the power shift model though, easy to drive and operate. They were used everyday of the year on my grandfathers livestock farm, for feeding, spreading and many chores. Those were great days in my memory.

I’m a red guy but I have plowed with a 69 3020 power shift and I was impressed and now I’m looking for one 😂😂

They brought back normal diesel engines with no DEF, next they gotta bring back the new generation series lol

I remember seeing these films on John Deere's Farming Futures Day at the local JD dealership. They were fun and interesting to watch, plus lots of food. A great time spent as a child.

John Deere has always made an excellent tractor, the 4020 has proven to a superior piece of equipment. I still own a 1969 4020 and we still use it for mowing and utility work.

Back in the late 70s and early 80s I worked for a couple of farmers, one had a 4020 and the other one had 3010,4010 and a few other makes . my opinion is the Deeres where great but sorry my favorite was the IH 1066 . you still can not beat any of the older tractors, I actually own a Oliver 77 gas.

Ran both on the dairy farm... Remember a rod getting chucked through the side of the block on the 30 and it was still running. Patched the block and did a rebuild and 35 years later she is still running.

My Grandpop bought a 3020 new in 1970 and we still have it today and is still a handy tractor.

I grew up on a 4020 power shift and in my opinion one of the best tractors I have ever driven green and yellow is the best for me anyway, thanks for the video!!!

We were a large Deere dealer in Henrietta NY 1953-1990 .Also a large farming operation over 4000 acres. 3020 and 4020 diesels were my favorite tractors. In fact 3020 diesel was the first tractor I operated in 1968 my age then 13 yrs. Thanks for posting and bringing back many memories.

Mr. Halpin, I was saddened to see the old dealership building being torn down this week on West Henrietta Rd. We bought lots of parts and a few pieces of equipment from your family over those same years of operation and remember the land you worked in the town quite well. It was nice to have a dealer within walking distance and a parts man who was an absolute Wizard too! Now, the closest farm equipment dealer is at least a 20 minute drive. It is amazing at how much Henrietta has changed over the last 30 years (and not much is for the better unfortunately). They call it progress, but I don't see anything progressive about it. I miss the days of Tirabassi's and your family's big green tractors rolling down the road to get to the next field. Our farm is still going, and after 4 generations I'm going to do my level best to pass it on to the 5th. We still own some classic green equipment, including a 4520 that may have come from the Halpin dealership at one point. They are good, hard working machines!

@@martinmiller3313 Thanks Martin I lived next door to the dealership from Birth 1954 to 1978 with parents and siblings. Well I heard it was getting redevopled to probably fast food and other junk. When I go back to Henrietta some people think I am off. Cause I tell them we farmed and sold equipment in the town. I live in Canandaigua and don't farm anymore I drive truck for Wegmans part time. @@williamhalpin6713 You will be happy to know that your homestead is still alive and well (the house anyway) as it was moved from the corner of Lehigh Station and West Henrietta to it's current spot on Brooks Rd. I still remember watching them jack it up, load it onto large house-moving trailers, and haul it down the road. That was quite a sight! They quickly built a Wendy's where the house was, and now you are probably (sadly) correct that the dealership site will be some more junk that Henrietta does not need. I am amazed at how much development has taken over Henrietta over the past 30 years; it's sickening to people of agricultural background and equally sad how short memories are that people don't believe that it once was farmed.

4020 ,great power in the field and good road speed ,pulling wagons home to farm. I'm 62 yrs old my favorite John Deere tractor, power shift is great to get up to road speed , one day I was pulling a fully loaded self unloading wagon of corn silage and I past a neighbor,,,,,an older lady ,,,,surprised the hell out of her.

My dad had a 4010 row crop wide front that was the version just prior to the 4020 I really awesome well maneuvering agile machine.

The 4020 is still considered an excellent tractor and many are still earning their keep on farms. The 4020 Diesel Standard was a popular tractor here in Australia, popular with our wheat growers.

Just bought a 4020 diesel power shift a month ago and am in love with it, 3020 gas is on an auction this weekend and if the price is right I’ll have 2 “new generation” tractors that really sling shot Deere to the tractor leader in the 60’s

My dad had a new 68 3020, when I was 6. I even got the die cast toy of it the next Christmas. I hauled in corn to the local elevator with it when I was 13. It could handle two 250 bushel gravity boxes. I felt like a little King every trip, and will never forget the trust I had in John Deere quality. We overhauled ourselves once. The tractor never let us down in over 40 years of use.

Had a 3020 single wheel wasn't the 2 wheels up front. Great tractor to mow and plow with.

Yeah, I probably saw this video back then as we had a John Deere dealership only a mile from our farm plus I was friends with the guys we went to school with. Dad didn't get into John Deere equipment till later but years later we became exclusively JD. I think the power shift lost some power but the synchro shift was good. They did get the power shift really good on the 4850 though.

Man I got teared up reminiscing those days with my Grandpa on that ol 4020. We turned alot of dirt and alot of laughs.

My grandfather bought the neighbors dairy farm in1969 along with a brand new 4020. I bought that farm in 2017 and still milk cows here today. Wish that 4020 was still here on the farm.

Glad you enjoyed! I was unfamiliar with the ones from JD & JI Case. Thought IH was the only one to go that route for a long time.

We had a diesel 4010 tractor. It was a great tractor ... very reliable.

A 4020 diesel with power shift was the " green" caddilac of that era

My favourites were the 20 series, the 40 series, & the 60 series.

We rented from a farmer and my daddy would help him in the fields, the landlord had a 3020 and my daddy had to take it back to the landlord's barn so I went with him so we get it backed into the barn ( aluminum barn) so my daddy shut it off and we were about ten feet away from the barn and the tractor back fired I jumped about two feet in the air and about two feet forward, my daddy didn't tell it would do that so he's laughing at me. I will never forget it!!!!

Dad had the 4010 with nf and power shift , and a wf 4020, he always told the neighbors that they had auto steer, usually means he let me drive and he’d smack me if I get off .

We have a 1964 3020 gas I use for almost everything every day. On the throttle it says "pull knob to override stop" I always wondered what that meant. I always liked the synchro range transmission. It seemed unique to me.

You pull the knob and push the lever on down to give it more fuel than the normal wide open throttle

Pulling to the stop sets your PTO to 540 rpm. If you have the 1000 RPM shaft in or are working/ tilling you pull past the stop and all the way down for maximum power.

Dad’s first of many Deere’s was a brand new 3020.

Nobody that I know of & I've heard many good things about the power shift setup. IH's hydro was still a few years off yet & then you had to use slightly smaller tillage equipment so as not to over tax the pump. I'm sure someone will chime in & say they had no issues with the rated plow for their hydro. I'll quietly sit here & assume they were in potting soil.

JD New Generation to the last Sound Guards and the forage harvester 5200 /5400 self propelled are my favorites. Many thanks for honest commentary 👍

Ford! The designer of the Ford Select-o-Speed was fired by Ford when they (Ford) rushed the Select-o-Speed into production before it was thoroughly tested and debugged. The designer was then hired by Deere and was given the time to build and perfect the transmission.

I do not like power shift on tractors. I hated the Ford Select o Speed. I found it easier for me to control tractors with a clutch pedal vs a weird lever.

Yeah I know the 4020s power shift was really good but oh my gosh was the select oh speed terrible! And the power shift tractors don’t usually pull as much

I still feed sheep everyday with a 4020

I drove it as a 12 to 16 year old

I got 2 for sale. Done farming.

In 1979 I bought a brand new 4440. Pile of junk. O rings leaked, radio was static when AC fan was used, back wheel fell off- bolts were loose and transmission would come out of gear plowing, making a hell of a grinding noise! Pile of pure junk!

It's not a problem that you mention it. All my hay ground is essentially no-till. My potato patch gets plowed, but that's to keep the soil loose for bigger potatoes & it makes it easier to weed. Same with the garden. My hayfield also gets weeded by hand. It's a relatively quick job, as I've kept up with the weeds since it was planted in 2008. I don't spray for anything & manure & compost are utilized as fertilizer. That brings up one of my main complaints with current large scale practices. However, there are quite a few small & mid-sized farms out there doing organic no-till & that seems to be catching on ok. We shall see what the future holds for that type of operation. Regards!

@@barrynelson634 my Uncle had a 1965 4020 Powershift for a short time and Dad had a 4430 p.s. for many years. They were ok in the field, but not as nice around the yard. Also the shift from 7th to 8th was horrendous if you didn't use the clutch, it would damn near launch you out of the seat!

The short answer is, the cyan & yellow dye layers in the film (old E-1 to E-3 process Ektachrome) faded over time. If you look through some of the Deere filmstrips I copied, you'll see some green yet. Usually in illustrations. The cyan & yellow held up a bit there because they're more prominent. The IH filmstrip about the #2A hay conditioner also shows a bit of green in the hay & blue in the sky. That's my current color retouching project. It's taking me a bit to get that one done. It's been put on the back burner from time to time as spring is here & there is a lot of outdoor work to do. Hope to have that finished in a couple weeks. Probably won't do any more until next fall/winter.

We had Olivers from 1928 until 1990-ish.. Never looked at JD, IH< Famrall, although Ford was on our radar... Until the New Generation of JD... Oliver was the King. Of course White took over and drained their budgets... If not for White,... It would Oliver and JD.

Bought a 3020 in 1996 had it rebuilt been using it since. Had pump turned up 15% haven't touched it since. Round baled since then. Have new tractors . But they are pieces of shit compared to it.

Amen, screw the e p a and their associations if deere would bring back those type tractors you would get something done instead of your deere dealer waiting for an electrical part for your state of the art tractor while planting time is slipping away,,,,,,,,,,,
