Case Files : Black Sunday
22 years ago, a group of school boys went berserk in the middle of the night and descended on their female colleagues, raping and killing 19 of them. The boys were later charged in court but escaped with light sentences since the charge of murder could not be proved. Today, some of them live in the same community with the survivors of that ordeal. Was there a miscarriage of justice?

Father God i pray my son that he fear you all the days of his life, not to ever harm anyone, help me rise him in your ways, this is so heartbreaking
I am an educated woman, only slightly younger than these women. I have a great interest in history and the world around me. I am ashamed that I never heard of this until Jan 2023. I hope those women are doing okay in life after enduring such barbarity. It's unimaginable.

Stigmatizing the victims is wrong. After surviving such an ordeal they deserved so much more. My heart goes out you. I stand with you.

I've cried the whole time watching this video. Those poor girls.. the ones who died and those who survived, I hope they find peace.
These women are still traumatised. I really hope someone helps them work through it
This is honestly so disturbing. I am getting chills thinking what if this could have happened at my High School.
Thanks for sharing.

i once heard this story narrated by a friend who is a meru i thought it's one of the random tales i never thought this is a real life story omg may the girl's souls continue resting in peace.... very heart tearing
i came here after watching Abel mutua's headline hitters sorry to every family that was affected
this is so sad....so heartbreaking to see the tears
What kind of collective madness would seize these young men to carry out such a deed? How do they even live with themselves? Of course this was a miscarriage of justice. These boys should have been jailed for life - the whole lot of them.
I am lost for words. Very heartbreaking. Poleni sana.
I was in Class 3, and now a teacher. Though I know that students during those days were huge and mature, this is an act that no culture permits at all. You never can descend on fellow students senselessly like that. That even the police refused to come? I feel sad. The girls who died, lost their dear lives painfully crying for help, Receiving none of it.
this is my alma mata but the story takes a new meaning everytime i hear it. Even after the change of name, i remember there were no less than ten strikes during the period i studied there. may god rest their souls in eternal peace

Ten strikes? Oh my goodness!
It is time they start abolishing boarding schools, parents should be 99% responsible for their children.Students during the adolescent period can be headache to teachers.Teachers are there to teach and the parents work is to instill discipline and values. How can they do this if they see their children almost 4 months in a year. They are leaving their responsibilities to teachers then such things occur.
Very very sad and heart breaking...where is humanity???
This is totally heartbreaking, ive never felt so sorry for a fellow human being, the reluctance by the authority to stop this is imensely shocking,i hope this will never re-occur again.
Very sad I can only imagine the screams. It's a nightmare.
If only in kenya DNA tests would really work. Maybe samples collected then could have helped prosecute them even if it's now
No translation of victims statements or this was meant for Kenyan crowd only?
The court might have done little but God punished those that raped and killed in a way only they can tell.
Most of them went mad. So dont let people tell you there is no Karma. It is there and it is the God who fights for the innocent .
lol anyone else notice how nothing became of the alleged criminal? haha they are either mad, dirt poor, or crazy. that right there is justice!!! God showed them

this is horrific.

I wish the sub titles were good.
We hope this will never will never happen again....
Am here coz of abel mutua
It is extremely heart-breaking to see how a place of learning where hard working parents have sent their children so that they can develop their life skills in order to improve their society can be turned within one night into what must have felt like a Nazi torture camp to the innocent defenceless victims. That act of barbarism consequentially produced nothing more than broken lives from both the victims and the perpetrators all these years later..and for many more years yet ahead... ...there were no winners... ..this brings tears to my eyes... ..many tears. May that community begin to find real healing one day.
Very sad and painful indeed

Indeed??
Years later, the then boys should be arraigned and sent to prison.
This is such a sad story. The victims still look traumatized remembering this ordeal and it's a pity they are ridiculed. The police failed these girls and the courts denied them justice. I pray that all surviving victims find peace and forgiveness. I know some perpetrators were not jailed and got away easily, may those still alive find no peace. And how can the govt. compensate loss of life with ksh.500? Is this even a joke? This was pure evil, may those in authority during this ordeal who turned a blind eye know no peace.

It's sad that this happened. Good thing it has been recorded. People who were not born at the time like me can get to know our history and avoid it
The boys were drunk...in a boarding school?who got them the alcohol?this is extremely sad.

This was very gross, tragic and unthinkable to commit such atrocities to colleagues
We Africans are animals. We cannot deny this. Africa has very dark history of self inflicting wounds. We harm our own.
i believe if the court fails nature and God will never
I remember this incident in the early 90s....it was the worst case of student unrest ever witnessed in a Kenyan school at the time...hizi boarding schools need to be shut down for good.

@@tonie4452 yes I Remember Kyanguli in Ukambani even the late Nyayo(Moi) was there to inspect the grisly scene...Boarding schools are deathtraps as far as am concerned they should all be shut down as they are run more like prisons than schools hence the unrest...I went to a boarding school so I should know....I would NEVER send my kid to those Boarding schools I dont care how' Good' the school is.
Former student there but the student changed
So disturbing no wonder most of the Meru men are useless the cry of the 19girls will waste their generations for long

The community really needs to come together and do cleansing because this. Action has left a generational curses I believe there's a lot of spiritual undertones to the accident because Denial of justice and reopening of the school. They school is supposed to be demolished. White people would do that for just one person yet African can't even close the school. Africa is a problem
Very sad
drinking alcohol has do what for victims?
shocking..!!
School administration should stand trial as well.

The principal, James Laiboni "In the past, the boys would scare the girls out of their dormitories and in the process they would get hold of them and drag them to the bush where they would 'do their thing' and the matter would end there, with the students going back to their respective dormitories."

Not a viable idea. Boarding schools also tend to attract some of the best talent in the country - Alliance, Lenana, Kenya high, Dagoretti, Precious Blood, Nbi School. Just because there are a few bad apples out there doesn't mean that you burn down the entire crop. Besides, I think it's great preparation for college life.
