Case Files : Black Sunday

22 years ago, a group of school boys went berserk in the middle of the night and descended on their female colleagues, raping and killing 19 of them. The boys were later charged in court but escaped with light sentences since the charge of murder could not be proved. Today, some of them live in the same community with the survivors of that ordeal. Was there a miscarriage of justice?

I am an educated woman, only slightly younger than these women. I have a great interest in history and the world around me. I am ashamed that I never heard of this until Jan 2023. I hope those women are doing okay in life after enduring such barbarity. It's unimaginable.

What kind of collective madness would seize these young men to carry out such a deed? How do they even live with themselves? Of course this was a miscarriage of justice. These boys should have been jailed for life - the whole lot of them.

I was in Class 3, and now a teacher. Though I know that students during those days were huge and mature, this is an act that no culture permits at all. You never can descend on fellow students senselessly like that. That even the police refused to come? I feel sad. The girls who died, lost their dear lives painfully crying for help, Receiving none of it.

It is time they start abolishing boarding schools, parents should be 99% responsible for their children.Students during the adolescent period can be headache to teachers.Teachers are there to teach and the parents work is to instill discipline and values. How can they do this if they see their children almost 4 months in a year. They are leaving their responsibilities to teachers then such things occur.

It is extremely heart-breaking to see how a place of learning where hard working parents have sent their children so that they can develop their life skills in order to improve their society can be turned within one night into what must have felt like a Nazi torture camp to the innocent defenceless victims. That act of barbarism consequentially produced nothing more than broken lives from both the victims and the perpetrators all these years later..and for many more years yet ahead... ...there were no winners... ..this brings tears to my eyes... ..many tears. May that community begin to find real healing one day.

This is such a sad story. The victims still look traumatized remembering this ordeal and it's a pity they are ridiculed. The police failed these girls and the courts denied them justice. I pray that all surviving victims find peace and forgiveness. I know some perpetrators were not jailed and got away easily, may those still alive find no peace. And how can the govt. compensate loss of life with ksh.500? Is this even a joke? This was pure evil, may those in authority during this ordeal who turned a blind eye know no peace.

Not a viable idea. Boarding schools also tend to attract some of the best talent in the country - Alliance, Lenana, Kenya high, Dagoretti, Precious Blood, Nbi School. Just because there are a few bad apples out there doesn't mean that you burn down the entire crop. Besides, I think it's great preparation for college life.
