Carving For Focus, Relaxation, and Creativity. Is COLD Carving Pottery for You?
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
COLD Carving stands for Continuous One Line Drawing. It is a practice that has been used in other mediums such as painting to unblock creativity, improve focus, and relax the mind. We (well, Jim really) adapted this philosophy for pottery and in this video explains his methodology and benefits. Its a practice for ANY artist to try - check it out. It beats drugs and alcohol...well...most times. TWO THINGS YOU HAVE TO PUT UP WITH IN THIS VIDEO...1. Jim's voice, not as nice as Ann's. 2. Ann's camera work...we'll just leave it at that.
If you would like to learn Ann's underglaze painting, glazing, and decorating process then check out Ann's Video Workshop Series. These workshops are very detailed (typically 1.5 - 2 hours in length) where Ann provides step by step instruction and are designed to help potters take their work to new levels of craftsmanship and artistry. vimeo.com/showcase/6725318

Well, hello, Jim! So nice to have a voice and hands to go with the name, lol 😉. We’ve had heard so much about you from Ann (all good, of course. 👍🏼). Loved the video and will be giving this a try. 💚. Thanks for all you do!
Beautiful inspiring video Ann and Jim! My son and I are doodlers in the same style:) we will defiantly apply it to pottery! Thanks you always for your patient instruction and tons of inspiration! Love and appreciate you✨🌸✨🙏🏻
You two always make me laugh. Great video and Thanks Jim for showing us that anyone can make something beautiful.
Awesome job Jim! I’ve been watching videos on Neurographic art and this reminds me of that. Also very meditative. Thank you both for providing these videos, I love them!

Oh a neurographic design turned into a carving would be really cool!
Excited to try COLD carving. Thanks.
Oh beautiful piece. This method looks so relaxing and to see it finished is great. It looks stunning
What a great team you two are! This is a great idea
This video is very mediative with the music. I like the idea to use this process when you are stuck creatively. I have the same fear sometimes and unsure what to do when I have a blank piece. I might try this next time
You make a great team!
excellent...love the music too
Love this video Jim, I will definitely be trying this technique out. Thanks for sharing 💖
Really interesting 👌 loved it.
Awesome job both of you from a kiwi 🥝 living in Australia who really needed this chill video today!! Especially from two big beautiful hearts like Jim and Ann!!!! 💚💚💚🥰🐑💨
Thank for sharing! Nice technique and music :)
That looks very good. Great idea! Thanks for the bucket reminder too.
Nice tute. I really like the ones with carving through colored slip. Makes a really nice contrast. 👍👍
Beautiful work. You two make a great team!
Jim: "I'm not a potter." Also Jim: "I'm a potter." 🤭 Great video as always. The pieces Jim worked on all looked bone dry or close to it. Does this approach work better on bone dry then or is it to remove some concerns about deforming the shape?

I (this is Jim) prefer bone dry but it can work either way. When the clay is leather hard (like in the video) there are more inconsistencies and it’s harder to maintain an even carving depth. Thanks Em!
Thank you for this meditative and informative video. It definitely motivated me to try it ! And your voice is so pleasant and calming 😎

This is so similar to free-motion quilting meanders. A good term to search for inspiration!
Beautiful!
Love these, thank you!
Loved the additional added humor - ty 😂
Just...Fabulous
Enjoyed the technique and your husband's sense of humor. Made me laugh more than once. Of course, I don't have to live with him, so there's that.😂

Now Sharon...Jim reads these comments (and often is responding on my behalf), lucky I caught this one. But, you are right on...still living with a man who has been going through puberty for 30 years. 😂

@@LittleStreetPottery Phew, glad you caught it, although, it was technically a compliment...in the beginning. :) 30 years is a long time.
Oh this was great !! Thank you both!
Really great! Can't wait to try this.
What a great tutorial!! I haven’t tried this but I definitely plan to. I absolutely love your humor!!! Clay in general has given me a black belt in cursing, my husband is actually a real 10th degree black belt in karate! Hahaha. I just love how both of your voices are so calming! I think it would really look great if you were to use a black underglaze in the crevices and wipe them back, then use a celadon over it. I know it does stain the clay a bit but it would really bring out the carved lines.

Great idea on using the underglaze Michele - I'll try that on one of my future pieces and post in the community section! Appreciate you participating, as always!
This is amazing 👏👏👏. Beautiful pieces . ❤️
Those are really beautiful! I love the designs. ❤️ I do this kind of thing all the time when sketching. Only, I have even less of a plan than you do. I just start making lines and letting my kind wander and eventually look down and see a strange face or object that has appeared. It’s fun and relaxing. I’m giving you fair warning….I’m stealing your 3rd degree black belt saying!🐝🤗❤️

I love how this technique turned out! I am, however, curious about how much silica dust would be created by doing it this way.

I have got to say that the red glaze that said Ochre on the bottle, was stunning before it was fired, but once it was fired it didn't look as good to me. Just personal taste of course. I have to say that the cold carving that Jim did, was utterly gorgeous and totally mesmerising to watch. I think that is the nicest design I have ever seen on a vase, or any ceramic vessel before. What colour of glaze would I need to get to produce that rusty red colour that the ochre glaze looks like straight out of the bottle please Ann or Jim?
Enjoyed the video and will try when bone dry the next time I carve taking note from your answers. Very soothing video all around. Will hope to see more. I was wondering when using blue language whether a blue belt in cussing would in this case be classed higher than a black belt? Ann, didnae do too badly behind the camera either. Cheers...Freddie

Good point Freddie. My 3rd degree black belt is from a non-sanctioned association (NAC - National Association of Cussers) - I do believe the sanctioned cussing belts are awarded by the World Cussing Organization (WCO) which, by the way, is located in Scotland.

Beautiful results! Great tips for getting a clean look. Can you tell me what stage of hardness the clay is when you carve? Is it hard leather hard, nearly bone dry, bone dry?

This is leather hard but I prefer to carve when its bone dry. Thanks!

Hi...thank you for this. The technique looks like a fun and creative way to break the potters block. There is no right or wrong, and no preconceptions or expectations. Have you ever tested the Car Detail Tape as a glaze resist? PS Is the Maharishi taking odds? Please reply...about the tape,
