Carving Bird body. Green winged teal. Art of Taxidermy.

Ойын-сауық

Hi everybody, here I have prepared another video on how to carve a body, as you have asked before. Its pretty much the same procedure for any other birds but the shape of course is different. Hopefully you can use it. Thanks for watching.

Do you think the pink or blue foam board you get at Menards would work. a 2inch by 12 by 8 foot is 23.oo. can glue together and get a lot of forms out of it. I was going to give it a try at carving own body. I looked up foam carving on YoutTube and there were a few carvers, craft carvers, using it. Could save lots of money on forms. Be a good way to practice without a lot of money. How do you cut on the lines and not cut out your pattern on the other side? Do you only cut half way on one side the all the way the other than take off the rest that you didn't cut through, kind of looks like that was your process.

Randy you he problem with those pink foam boards is their strength and rigidity. I’m sure if you laminate them and make it thicker you can do something with it but it won’t be the same the blue foam you see me use. If the cost is an issue for getting the proper form I understand but if availability is the problem , I’m here to tell you that you should be able to easily find where to pick up a block of the blue foam I use. (Let me know). Here is the way I cut them which I thought I have shown in my video … you cut your self a block aboit and inch larger that width and length of your body. Make one trace for the side profile and one trace for the top profile. Run it under your hand saw… start with cutting out the side profile … cut all the way but leave a half inch so the cut piece doesn’t fall out of the block. Then start on the top profile , cut it all out and throw away the sides.. then that half inch that you left on the side profile cutting, now can be carved out with knife. Now the body is cut out of the block and it’s time to sand, carve and shaping it. I’ll make another video to show this part too.

Brent.. this is not the regular blue insulation foam you might think. they do come in big blocks of 8' x 2' x 1'... so I cut them to any size I want.

What kind of foam do you use for the bodies? I’ve been having a hard time finding anything in stores and I’m not really sure what to look for online. I’ve been practicing with floral foam, but the only kind I have is soooooo hard to cut through. OH and another question actually. Do you know how to tan a bird hide, or do you have someone else do that for you? My family said that they would give me one of the ducks they get this year so that I could practice taxidermy on it, but I know nothing about how to prepare the hide before putting it on a body. I know that birds are hard to do, I like challenges. Thank you for any insight you might have, and you are the coolest person ever, thanks again :D

Hi Lilliana thanks for your comments. The foam you see I use is being bought in X-Large blocks from construction supply stores. These are made to be used in boat and docks industry. You might be able to find smaller blocks through taxidermy supply stores , they sometimes sell them for fish taxidermy. As for the bird skin… you don’t tan bird skin, you preserve them. I have a video on my channel it called “how to deal with bugs”.. I suggest you watch that. And also I have a series on black duck taxidermy. You can watch these videos and get ready for your experiment. Cheers.

@@ccfishing2954 If you want to carve the bodies yourself, the cheapest option would be the same foam I told you but the price is difference in the States than in Canada... I think they are about 200ish for each bloick.. you need to find a local distributor and find out.. ask for Bouyancy billet from DOW company... or just g to their site and and ask them directly.. you can always buy some ready to use waterfowl bodies from Mckenzie taxidermy too.
