Parrot Taxidermy..How to skin a Bird for Taxidermy. Green winged macaw. Art of Taxidermy.

This video is covering the process of skinning a macaw which is pretty much the same for all birds. I kept receiving requests about a full skinning process, and because I have my assistant do all the skinning for me, so I had to wait till I come across a specimen that needs my own attention for skinning. My camera doesnt have the microphone to record the sound so Im doing a bit of voice over on this one so hopefully it makes it fairly clear for you. aslo the speed of the video has been reduced so you have more time to watch the full process. Thanks and I hope you enjoy the video. Please let me know if you like the voice over part or you rather have just the music for future videos. Cheers

I agree, it's great that he understands that this bird was an important creature in the life of their people. Whenever I work with a dead animal, I start off talking to them when I'm skinning or butchering. It's not a belief in spirit thing, necessarily, although it's not NOT that. It's a respect thing. I think, "Oh, you must have been proud of that shiny, beautiful coat!" or I'll say, "What marvelous clever paws you had!" I'm trained as a scientist, so I know the names of the muscles and bones, how all the organs work, etc. But that never lessens my awe and happiness at the elegance and beauty of how all of us vertebrate animals are put together.

I can't wait for the video of the rest! I haven't been able to find anything about parrot mounting with actual steps for many years! I have 3 in the freezer. I have skinned 1 out, but really need to see what may be different from mounting other birds. I saved the body to carve one from it.

Very nice! I’ve heard of doing the wings like that before but have never seen it done. Makes a lot of sense to keep those secondaries in the correct position. Would make mounting much easier and more accurate to life. I’d love to see how you flesh waterfowl. I’ve been struggling a bit. I find it’s hard to know when you’ve fleshed enough or too much. If you want to be a vet you’d better become a good one so your birds don’t end up dead 😄

I didn't feel right to do this with a dead loved ones just for the sake of the owner. Isn't it right to just give it a proper burial?

Am I the only one who finds it uncomfortable, weird and disrespectful to do this to a dead animal? I feel like it's kind of a selfish thing to want to keep their physical bodies for personal/aesthetic purposes. Imagine if people taxidermized humans 😐

Well... I’m sure you are not alone and the nice thing is that we have lots of options and choices about what we do .... if you find it selfish then I guess you’d better not practice this, but my view on this is to respect the beauty that once was alive and now we preserve it to enjoy it even longer than before instead of letting it go to waste. This bird passed away after a couple of decades and we had two options burry it and let it decompose and gets wasted or preserve it and cherish its beauty for years to come and in some cases use it as an educational item, I choose the second option all the time.

Thanks for your reply. Is there any chance you could possibly send a picture of your fleshing tools.and the basic tools for bird taxidermy so I could make my own . and purchase what’s needed. It would be very much appreciated, I’m just starting out .keep it simple without compromising on quality although I’ve got a good idea of the tools you have got on the bench with the Macaw . I could give you my email address?thanks John
