Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

    I love the .308 by far my favourite, and to be honest it isn’t so much about performance. Most of my shots are between 50 yards and 150 yards so at that range any notable cartridge would suffice. The real reason I love my .308 was stated in the video “I like to be able to buy ammunition” I can go to my local hunting store and I 100 percent know I can pick up cartridges in any weight and configuration for a fairly decent price. Oddly enough my brother prefers the 7mm 08 and he sometimes has great trouble finding ammunition and then it’s usually over priced and bullet weight is sometimes not exactly what he wants. Because remember if you sight your gun in 150 grain bullet that’s probably what you should use to hunt with and if all you can find is 130 grain it may cause issues with your zero

    Its funny how the 308 was touted as a lighter recoiling version of the 30-06 for women and younger hunters but when the compare the 7mm08 to the 308 they say the 7mm is for women and youth. Fact of the matter is both will do the job at closer ranges and at longer ranges the 7mm-08 will perform a little better than the 308. I will agree the 308 might gets more support with a wider selection of bullet weights and construction but that is more a fault with the manufacturers not supporting the 7mm08 as much. All the arguments made in favour of the 308 can be made in favour of the 7mm-08 when you compare it to the 6.5 Creed but not many writers want to point that out. Everybody knows that the lighter recoiling Creed is geared more for masculine long range hunters than the 7mm08...right?

And most wouldn't even notice the accuracy drop off if it started. In my considerable time being involved with firearms, I have seen exactly one shot out rifle and it was a 243. I'm not considering surplus rifles and I can't vouch for the maintenance of the 243 but bullets it fired tumbled in 100 yards. One shot each and the second one was over 200 yards away quartering towards me. One shot and it never took a step. The reason I took the shot is the other moose that was with it had already turned and made it to the forest and I wasn't interested in taking a quartering shot while it would have been moving so I took my shot. I've never had to take a second shot with my 7mm-08. But I have to admit I'm working up loads with Federal TBT in 140 and 160 grains to hopefully get another 50 yards of effective range on moose in case I get another chance to hunt them. I am leaving today for an Elk hunt with my 12yr old daughter. It is her first big game hunt and her rifle is chambered in ...7mm-08. I debated three years ago when I bought her rifle and it came down to selection of youth rifles in a color she wanted. It was between 6.5 cm, 7mm-08 and 308, which I also have a few. The 6.5cm didn't have a lot of youth rifles (at the time in my area) and the 7mm-08 having a little less recoil might have tipped the scales. Another factor was it would be a new caliber for me. The one argument against the 7mm-08 vs 308 is ammunition availability. Especially now. I can find alot of 308 (relative) but have not found any 7mm-08 except for the light loaded rounds. One important factor to me is ammo availability. You can buy the 308 wherever ammo is sold. I question if that is true about the 7mm 08. As far as ballistics, Ron, you are correct regarding bullet drop. But, the 308 is better in the wind. Lastly, the 308 creates a larger wound channel, meaning it anchors better.

  • @francoisbuys8783

    @francoisbuys8783

    2 жыл бұрын

    No its not better in the wind. 7mm bullets have a far better BC than the .308 bullets. So how can the bullet with the lower BC be better in the wind. At 200yards the 7mm08 has alread have 1" less wind drift than the 308 with 150gr bullets. Even though the 7mm bullet is going 100fps slower. A 308 150gr custom competition have a BC of .450, where as a normal 7mm hunting bullet like the nosler BT has a BC of .493... The 308 just isnt as effective of a long range cartridge as people make it out to be

    The .308 does work well enough, but its proponents are always falling back on supply chain arguments. Which is really how we got stuck in the .30 rut in the first place. The .30-40 was quickly obsoleted, but we had to stick by all that .30 tooling when we sorted out its successor, when we could've skipped forwards to a 6.5 or 7 over a century ago. ;-)

    Circumstantial is the reason why a lot of not-as-good cartridges remain deeply ingrained in minds, even though manufacturers have improved most every aspect of the case, powder, bullet. There's something much better in just about every caliber than the old standby's in each caliber. Not every time, but in times.

They include 243, 260, 6.5x55, 6.5 creedmoor, 30/06, 275 rigby, 270 win, 9.3x62, 416 Taylor improved, and 416 Remington. I’ve never personally used the 7mm08 or 308, but have personally watched dozens of deer taken with those two.

    @@K0GNITION performance on game? There isn’t a lick of difference between the 6.5 Swede, creedmoor, and 260 rem. That’s between 30-33 whitetail I’ve taken with those three cartridges. I will say the creedmoor’s biggest advantage is the accuracy of factory loaded ammo for it. I never had great success with factory loads with the 260 or Swede. Which to be fair this was before 2010 with those two cartridges. There are ALOT for factory loads for the Swede and 260 now compared to then, so maybe the creedmoor doesn’t have that advantage any more? Not quite sure. I will say handloaded all three cartridges are basically twins in three slightly different case lengths, and I handloaded for all three of them. But did try factory loads also. I believe all three make great medium game/target rifle calibers.

    Great video Ron. So 308 has more drag, does that mean Richard a drag too!! 7mm-08 & 308, taking deer with both of them. I have to side with you, 7mm-08 is my choice too!! But I will be hung this year with my 308, using those Barnes 165gr. TTSX bullets! Good video Ron!!!

    The perfect ammo is the ammo that I can buy! I used to not worry about what gun to buy. I would go camping with friends and relatives. And buy a few boxes for their guns. And we would camp, barbecue, and shoot. Now in this century I have grandkids that need to learn the finer points of shooting. I find ammo on the shelf and buy several boxes. Then find something in the gun section to shoot it. I have to have more than one. So I have several bb guns, 22's, and shotguns. I have a .350 Legend, and 6.5 Creedmore. But I am looking at a 6.8 Western, and both of the discussed cartridges. Due to all the information provided by Ron Spomer and others on KZread. Many of the magnums are now obsolete. Last century I worked for an aerospace company that made 25mm and 30mm canons as some of their product line. I made the barrels, recievers, chain mechanisms, and cases. The completed product was very impressive. The target acquisition system on the Apache helicopter. Could easily hit targets at 1.5 miles. The 25mm Bushmaster had a version that can shoot down a retreating supersonic aircraft. So the milder less than 1,000 yard rifles are fine with me. I will use the ammo that I can buy a few boxes of. And I will save my shoulder for old age. Since I am already 66.

    The 7mm 08 you can shoot bullets in roughly the same weight class that are much more efficient and less recoil. I'll take that all day every day... This was funny me and a buddies argue like this all the time with just about everything to do with hunting or fishing!! GOOD TIMES

    What is the " 08 " part of the 7mm 08 designation ? A what is the difference between that round and the 7mm mag . I've owned a 7 mag for near 50 years and I can't even tell you how many coyotes I've nailed with that gun from over 1K yards . Also had a few black eyes from the 3 x 9 Redfield sitting on top of it ! ha .

    I'd imagine the "08" part is a nod to the .308 itself, since the 7mm08's casing is from that cartridge I think.

    7mm-08 was originally a wildcat round based on a .308 necked down to .284 (7mm). The 08 references the .308 cartridge that is the parent cartridge for the 7mm-08. The 7mm Remington Magnum is a totally different cartridge than the 7mm-08. If you come across 7mm Express Magnum which is the same as .280 Remington or rarely known as 7mm-06 (.280 Remington parent case .30-06) it is also a totally different cartridge than 7mm Remington Magnum or 7mm-08.
