Cartooning and Markers with Will Terrell - Lesson 1 - Keeping a Sketchbook
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Will Terrell is a Professional Character and Prop Designer for Warner Bros. Animation. Follow along with Will in his 4 part series as he shows you cartooning and using markers.
The most important thing he will be demonstrating throughout this workshop is trying to have fun while keeping a sketchbook, because that’s the idea!
LESSON 1 of 4: KEEPING A SKETCHBOOK
Starting with Rough Sketches
REFERENCES
Will prefers sketching from life in public because it forces you to have a critical eye and capture the main aspects of a subject since usually they keep moving.
If you’d rather not sketch in public the website iamchicago.net/ has a collection of photos of characters and people who live in Chicago. There are many unique and interesting people on the site that are great to use as references.
SKETCHING PEOPLE
• Focus on observation
• Look at who you’re drawing more than you look at the paper
• Sketch the big shapes first, then break it down smaller shapes
• Keep it light - especially when using colored pencils as it’s more difficult to erase lines than when using graphite
• Many people struggle with drawing because they are focusing on what they think they see versus what they’re actually seeing. The brain tells you something should look a certain way, but truly observing and drawing real life versus imagined images will help.
• The best way to overcome this obstacle is just to draw A LOT - challenge yourself to fill up a sketchbook every single month
• The best way to get better at drawing from real life is to draw fast
• Keep your pencil moving and don’t get caught up on drawing details
• You’re not just training your hands to draw, you’re also training your eyes to see
• Draw through objects - for example - in the image below I am drawing the brim of the hat all the way around the head so the shape comes out right.
• Make a goal to sketch every day and do 10-20 very loose sketches at a time. Don’t get caught up in details and keep it loose. You’ll learn so much from that and remember HAVE FUN WITH IT!

I LOOOVEE Will Terrell! when I heard the intro I was like this reminds me of Will so I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be him. He does some of the BEST people sketches. Very talented!
OMFG WILL IS BACK *screams*
As a undergraduate art student in the middle of midterms and projects, I've been having a rough week. My professors seem to be pushing this minimal style of work that just isn't me. Every time I say I'm interested in character design, illustration, and comics it isn't always met with the most encouragement in the world of "contemporary art." Your videos have reignited my inspiration and made me feel more confident in pursing illustration. Thanks for the pick-me-up today, I needed it!

Glad that it helped, friend. Keep smiling!
Not criticism but an additional tip that goes nicely with this guide. The only thing I do differently when drawing live people is to first draw a single slightly curved line representing the spine, then I draw big to small shapes around that. What drawing the curvature of the spine does is it really helps you capture their posture. Especially if they are moving a lot. It suggests the way that the arms or legs could hang off of the body. So even if they aren't sitting the same way you have that initial representation of how they were sitting.
I'm a huge fan of your work but most of all your vibe and unique way to enjoy what you do, big inspiration every single video for me, best regards from México
Thank you for sharing the demonstration and for the little gems of information and suggestions. A must watch for anyone who wants to improve and enhance their current skill level.

berit branch Easy choice.
Thank you for this video. Very good! I have never used one of the toned sketch books before, and also never used a red pencil for sketching. Will, do you use a red pencil frequently or just for the demo? Is there an advantage to that? Also, did you go to school for art, or is this just something you have mastered on your own? Can't wait to check out the other videos! Thanks!
greaty video but how do you draw shoes ?
You can get the Japanese brush pens and other import goodies from Jetpens.com. Beware of blowing all your money there though.

Awesome Where can someone buy one of your skecthbooks?

Hello Will! I’m in the process of watching all of the markers on toned paper series now and I also am a new subscriber. Can you give me a brand of markers set that not only has the basic colors but skin tone colors as well so I don’t have to purchase multiple marker sets?
Hi Will, Your comment about tools/materials won't help you in drawing/painting, I agree with wholeheartedly, but bad tools/material can hold you back. I live in Spain and there very few artists stores unless you drive a loooong way, so I used the local chinese cheapo stores for paper and stuff. It was terrible. It wasn't until I bought some quality products online that I realised how bad they were. Since then my artwork has taken off. (A lot due to you!)

Andy Roberts I agree wholeheartedly, cheap materials can hold you back.
I like the idea of a case like that to keep a few drawing tools organized in one place. Where would one find such a case?

Tinkering Night Owl Purchased this same case at hobby lobby, but the exterior of mines is fabric instead of leather. Very affordable.
