It was a four door ute . The tyres may have been spares that were in the back of the ute so that they were prepared for the event of punctured tyre or flats , which is something that happens when you are using off the grid tracks . These wilderness areas are hardly nice sealed bitumen ones that your council workers provide for you to travel to work on. So the tyres, were possibly the contingency ones that were in the back of the ute . AND , I could be wrong . I don't know for certain. It is an educated guess. And we will continue to examine this case so we can pin down, what has happened and how and when and where and who definitely.

I work with a girl from El Salvador. She said the problem is white tourists go to these countries, stand out immediately as tourists and don't realise how incredibly dangerous it can be if you go into the wrong area, see something you shouldn't or speak to the wrong person. Locals know that stuff. I don't know how much due diligence they did but I certainly would not go driving down remote roads in a country known for it's brutal drug cartels, human trafficking and other assorted horrors. I'm not victim blaming but I hope it is a cautionary tale to others. Australia is a haven. Many countries are not and we shouldn't forget that.

Certain folks just stick out like sore thumbs. A caucasian in asia or central america is one. An asian in europe or Africa is another. It just instantly paints you as a target. If they went down as a group of three, at the very least one guy stays with the truck while the other two surf. Coming from Aussie, why on earth would you not choose a safer place to surf to visit? Mexico isn't a safe place. Where I live, Mexican doctors have relocated because as professionals, they were easy targets and threatened by the cartels. One had part of his ear cut off, not a joke.

It's the same as people come to Australia and wander about in the Outback, no idea of the vastness of the country. I no Australians feel really sorry when a tourist looses their life here. My heart is so heavy with the sadness these three young men's families must be feeling now. When they were caught the tires were on the girlfriends vehicle and she had one of their phones. Like I said too sloppy to be the cartel and they were too small of a game to target. The campground there is very popular with surfers and fisherman. I've surfed and camped there many times but I always set up camp near others in the campground area. Cartel involvement is complete bs.
There is no bombshell or shock claim here, it is in the cartels self interest to minimize police activity in areas that the cartel actively conducts its illegal businesses, especially where the police are looking into a 'third party' crime simply because of 'international' media interest. That interference is extremely unprofitable while searching is conducted by the 'authorities'. A simple cost/benefit calculation indicates the third party offenders (of the cartel) are cautioned warned (of the safety of family, friends and associates) and turned over to the police so regular business can be resumed and international media attention returns to other topics.

Out of all the surfing spots in the world, they chose Mexico.
Even the cartel doesn't play that foolishness
I lived in Carlsbad, California for a brief time and once drove down to the border, walking out to the beach at Border Field State Park. The border fence extended into the ocean a bit (not far enough), and Mexico was right on the other side. It was kind of unnerving.

Bots can't be "unnerved" 😂
“Unwanted attention from the Mexican authorities”… so being in a drug cartel doesn’t get them attention? Layer upon layer of things wrong with that statement
Drug deal gone wrong.
cops do this ..im from mexico
If you leave the safety of your homeland, be aware that in many places by millions of people, you will be a target they consider easy. Travel only to places that have none of this shenanigans going on. Mexico has been and will remain a very dangerous place. You're lucky if you went there and made it out unharmed. Russia is the same way. Stay out of the mess. The dream vacation can easily become a nightmare.

Stop slandering their good name you vultures and ghouls.
If you are not in drugs business they will not mess with you. I am sure there is more to the story.
So... what was the shock claim? That the robbers weren't cartel members? That the cartel handed them to police (my understanding is that the woman was found because she had a dead man's phone that was tracked by GPS)? Is there supposed to be a link to a story that justifies the headline?
