It was a four door ute . The tyres may have been spares that were in the back of the ute so that they were prepared for the event of punctured tyre or flats , which is something that happens when you are using off the grid tracks . These wilderness areas are hardly nice sealed bitumen ones that your council workers provide for you to travel to work on. So the tyres, were possibly the contingency ones that were in the back of the ute . AND , I could be wrong . I don't know for certain. It is an educated guess. And we will continue to examine this case so we can pin down, what has happened and how and when and where and who definitely.

I work with a girl from El Salvador. She said the problem is white tourists go to these countries, stand out immediately as tourists and don't realise how incredibly dangerous it can be if you go into the wrong area, see something you shouldn't or speak to the wrong person. Locals know that stuff. I don't know how much due diligence they did but I certainly would not go driving down remote roads in a country known for it's brutal drug cartels, human trafficking and other assorted horrors. I'm not victim blaming but I hope it is a cautionary tale to others. Australia is a haven. Many countries are not and we shouldn't forget that.

Certain folks just stick out like sore thumbs. A caucasian in asia or central america is one. An asian in europe or Africa is another. It just instantly paints you as a target. If they went down as a group of three, at the very least one guy stays with the truck while the other two surf. Coming from Aussie, why on earth would you not choose a safer place to surf to visit? Mexico isn't a safe place. Where I live, Mexican doctors have relocated because as professionals, they were easy targets and threatened by the cartels. One had part of his ear cut off, not a joke.

I was going to Mexico 10 years ago and was advised by Americans to change my plans. They were very decent people as I think most Mexicans are. It's the same as people come to Australia and wander about in the Outback, no idea of the vastness of the country. I no Australians feel really sorry when a tourist looses their life here. My heart is so heavy with the sadness these three young men's families must be feeling now. The respect of the surfer community where they were seen enjoying the culture and friendship of the people in the community ses a lot to me. Please don't think I'm callous in my comment, it's a tragedy of the worst kind. I just don't get how you can take lives so cruelly.

ANY unwanted attention from law enforcement is bad for business. So the mob, the cartels, whoever is running the OC racket, often cooperate with law enforcement when they aren't involved in the crimes in question. It keeps the cops busy, off their backs, and might even score them a few points with the detectives. Its not rocket science. Have you ever seen a legit mob movie or read a book? I wouldn't believe anything the Cartels said. I think the plan backfired and drew more attention that they thought and they are not liking the heat it's attracted. I dont believe the tire claim ( they were not taken ) I think they wanted the truck for either transporting drugs or humans or to fit a weapon to.

@@sbdreamin Yeah and they wouldn't have killed anyone to steal it. I knew right off it was too sloppy to be the cartel. They started out just wanting to steal the tires but when they ended up killing three people they switched them out with their vehicle and drove the truck to an isolated area and torched it to try and hide any evidence. When they were caught the tires were on the girlfriends vehicle and she had one of their phones. Like I said too sloppy to be the cartel and they were too small of a game to target. The campground there is very popular with surfers and fisherman. I've surfed and camped there many times but I always set up camp near others in the campground area. It looked like these guys were solo camping up north of the point at the beachbreak with no one else around. BTW-I live in Ensenada and I always feel safe anywhere here in town and I take precautions when camping by trying to stay close to other campers. RIP

Cartels are terrified of that Terrorist designation can’t be killing Americans or anyone for that matter and not pay consequences. Mexico and its people are beautiful with such a dynamic culture. The violence and drugs make the country a no go for the majority of us who do value our lives over travel. We have a beautiful country here with great people just like anywhere else. The media and these algorithms portray a poor image of all these places.

The friend is from San Diego having scores of fantastic surf spots, so why y take chances going to Mexico?? We too knew of the risks food poisoning banditos and corrupt federales police which we did have some encounters with. Yes, we all do it for the adventure, but something just isn't making sense

There is no bombshell or shock claim here, it is in the cartels self interest to minimize police activity in areas that the cartel actively conducts its illegal businesses, especially where the police are looking into a 'third party' crime simply because of 'international' media interest. That interference is extremely unprofitable while searching is conducted by the 'authorities'. A simple cost/benefit calculation indicates the third party offenders (of the cartel) are cautioned warned (of the safety of family, friends and associates) and turned over to the police so regular business can be resumed and international media attention returns to other topics.

It doesn't take an empath to read the greed and disdain they feel for us. And it's not just Mexico. The U.S. has been 'meddling' in Central and South America for 2 centuries now and they know it and there is no forgiveness. Don't be young and unaware of that hate.
