Paul Page's opening narration. Brilliant as always! :)
Brilliant racing and cars
6:40 ABC Producers: We need a crowd shot for some atmosphere, what can we cut to...? Ooh look, a horse crapping in the brush, cut to that, quick!" lmao
This is a fun race to watch. Great win for Rick Mears to open the 1989 CART season.
Thank you for posting all of these old 80's CART races......use to drive down to Phoenix with my Dad and brother from Colorado and it was the best!!!!!!!!!!!!
Era a estreia do Chassi Penske Chevrolet da equipe Patrick Racing.
OMG... Rick Mears really dominated this race! look at the pass in 1:01:05 !!! Wow!!! Great Driver!!!
fitipald o genio brasileiro...
A temporada em que Emerson Fittipaldi se sagrou campeão da Indy
I agree. Not only did that cost him essentially a full season, but you have to assume that he would have won some additional road courses as well.

He was the point leader when he had his accident yes?

@@SaidHead2 I think he was in 2nd. Mario was on a ridiculous hot streak going into Sanair, having won 4 of the last 6. He still finished tied for the 4th highest point total without running after Sanair.
So this was the race that Al Unser started driving that famous Valvoline car.

No, he started running Valvoline and that livery in 1988.
After seeing this race. I believe if Rick didn't hurt his legs in Sanair in 1984. He would at least won about 40 races instead of 26.

Easily. He was a short oval specialist.

He may have even went to F1, he had outran Nelson Piquet in testing by 0.8 of a second. Either way, the wreck at Sanair robbed us of the greatness of prime Rick.

And probably at least one more series title. He's one of the best oval racers of all time either way, but Rick was pretty good on road circuits before the accident. The injuries to his feet made it a little more difficult for him to shift effectively. That said, he still wasn't bad on the road courses by any means. He finished 5th/4th/2nd/3rd/4th in points his last 5 full seasons. You can't do well just on ovals and finish that high that consistently.

@@Eibarwoman Did Rick have the talent to run F1 (prior to the accident)? Absolutely. But the culture of the F1 world would have been a turn off for Rick. He's well known as being a very laid back "regular" guy. The high visibility, high pressure world of F1 wouldn't have appealed to him. I'm sure he could have handled it, but if given the choice...

@@zlinedavid I fully agree with that statement.
I looked it up, Dobson did not win ROY in 86.
