Cars of Fallout: Remastered

They may only be useful as impromptu explosives, but cars have been an important part of the Fallout landscape. Their lore, and the real world cars that inspired their designs are quite fascinating. Lets see if you know the inspiration behind some the vehicles you walk by each game.

Maybe they did explode, but not as much. They probably released just as many rads though. There are probably a lot of parts of the cars that don't work anymore, and they probably don't have any coolant in them, but we know that coolant was something there were stations to fill up your car with. Maybe they are safer when they have coolant in them, and all we're doing when damaging them is kickstarting the fusion reactor.

Cherry Bomb is very likely a reference to early 'glass pack' mufflers that were designed to add a loud yet throaty sound to the exhaust. Cherry Bombs and Thrush were two of the most popular brands. This was in the early sixties and they may have been around in the late 50s. Side exhaust pipes are more commonly called "Lake Pipes". They were used so that the vehicle could be as low to the ground as possible for speed runs. These runs happened on dry lake beds like the Salt Lakes so they were called lake pipes.

Happens the same with taxis, I remember in the good old days of fallout 3 forums people sayed that there where no tanks because the almighy power armor make heavy Tonks able to carry 120 mm cannons obsolete (when the heaviest thing carried by a power armor its a 50 cal or a fatman) but the thing that remains with me its that: Don't worry if we don't see taxis, firetrucks only in nv and 76 police cars, civilian passenger trains... its all because people used power armors. Nah just kidding I thing the concepts always look cool but at the time of modeling stuff and inplementing that on the world map somethings are not well implemented or had enough time at the hands of the guy making the textures or watever when he has to texturize also the prydwen liberty prime, other cars and vehicles.. So in my mind its because of that, but yep that police car its just too beautiful to be forgotten.

About the stick in the Cherry Bomb. One of the Firebird turbine powered cars (I forget which) had a joystick beside the driver's seat. You pushed it forward to acclerate, pulled back to brake and tilted it left/right for steering. So that's another design cue that Fallout 4 may have taken from those vehicles.

Always loved the retro-futuristic cars in these games. One historical note I will mention, is that some car companies were notorious for fudging or downright fabricating their performance numbers for sales (Jaguar XKE comes to mind, for one), so I wouldn't be surprised if the same is true for the Fallout setting

I'd argue the explosive nature of cars in Fallout is likely due to decades (more accurately, centuries) of lack of upkeep and repairs. I would assume that the fusion reactors become unstable as time goes on without mechanical maintenance or coolant replacement, because frankly if they did this prewar, a single pileup collision on an interstate could lead to a chain reaction that could wipe out an entire major city

17:58 As a car guy and someone who's been following the lore closely for the last 20 or so years I'd like to know when we all decided to say that the Corvega was no longer a model made by Chryslus as it shows in the commercial, with different individual varying year models and sub models, but suddenly became its own sub brand. The video refers to the "sedan" 3d model as a Highwayman at 8:34 when its half buried as the Fallout 2 easter egg in New Vegas, but then calls the same 3d model a Corvega at 16:49. It can't be both and the devs already made it clear its a Highwayman made by Chryslus. Which in turn makes it clear that not every vehicle sporting the Chevron is part of any potential Corvega sub brand. I'd like to know where the names of these cars are officially listed in the lore or by the devs, and not just some copy paste wiki because I'm starting to think fans are just pulling the names out of thin air like they did with the "Atomic V8" misunderstanding. At 20:35 I honestly thought it was common knowledge in the Fallout community now that the Blitz was based heavily on the Desoto Adventurer 2 concept car. Also I know it was just a joke but the comment at 30:52 is peak car noob drivel. The guys who say that kind of stuff are always the kind of guys who can't speed shift a manual transmission to save their life and don't realize that a properly tuned automatic is superior at everything but roll starting which is why they are the top choice in the virtually all serious racing classes.

The answer to the cherry bombs claim is simple. Thrust SST does not exist in the Fallout setting, since they clearly had issues with any kind of microprocessors and it seriously delayed many technological developments. Much like a certain Boston team refused any use of their trademarks to Bethesda, and never won a world series... they were set to sweep one once, but the 4th game, which they were a shoo-in to win, was scheduled for the afternoon of October 23, 2077

If there’s one big reason why vehicles aren’t something the player can use actively in current fallout games, it would be due to the in game worlds not being quite big enough to make it necessary (76 is close, but can still be covered end to end by foot pretty easily).

I like many fans would love to see working cars in a Bethesda game but even though it's possible I doubt it seeing the state of most roads especially with their trend with east coast most likely not changing( the east coast places being more mountainous) places more in the west would be cool with big open spaces like Texas, New Mexico, Montana, and many many more we haven't seen but I highly doubt it

They should really let us utilise cars in some new way in 5, like using repair to send them barreling towards an enemy encampment, activating an alarm to start a wave defence battle, or turning it into a massive atomic landmine with the explosives skill/perk

Great video! I also find the cars of Fallout fascinating, and feel many of your observations are spot on. I’ve never seen the side view of a Fusion 3, but after hearing it had a knock-off as an amusement park ride, I started to see the Davis 3 Wheeler in the redesign profile. The history of the Davis 3 Wheeler is similar to that of the Tucker, but one noteworthy observation is that Gary Davis, the 3 Wheeler inventor, went on to create the Dodge ‘Em bumper cars. Check it out in Wikipedia.

I gotta say, out of all of the Fallout cars, the Atomic V8 is the finest. Also the idea of it being this big comfy family car that's powerful enough to tow campers (and probably other stuff) adds a real utilitarian value to the car as well. Bad ass looking!

Y'know, considering how many people were tinkering with power armor throughout the series, I'm really surprised that nobody in canon decided to use the powerplant from the fusion-flea or zip to build some massive power/mech at some point. It could even just be the "wastelander" equivalent to military power armor, just as tough but bulkier and less efficient.

28:21 That Car reminds a mix of a Ford Roadster 1932 and the rear maybe from a Bugatti Type 57, because of the way the column goes straight from the back to the top of the roof. Also, the other one at 28:28 reminds me of the 1925 Rolls Royce Phantom, mainly the wide fenders with the doors being "inside" and overall lines. Even being a car guy, im not good with older cars, being better with something above 80s, but i tried my best to find some match

I went to a car show for the first time with my dad a couple years ago. There were loads of classic cars from all different eras, and one thing I noticed about the kind of cars that inspired the ones found in Fallout was how freaking HUGE they all were. Seriously, some of the regular sedans I saw there were as long and as wide as a camping trailer. At least the American cars were, which makes sense given how car-crazy American culture was becoming in those days. They were lovely looking vehicles nonetheless, but I would not want to drive one.

Must have been looking at the late 60s through the 70s vehicles at the show. The 1950s cars were not that big in size, the 1960s saw an enlargement but still were modest in size, the 1970s is when the land yatchs came out and were huge. My '78 Cougar XR7 midsize front bumper to rear bumper is right at 20 feet long. My '63 Belair fullsize bumper to bumper is 18 feet long. My '56 Fairlane fullsize bumper to bumper is 15 feet long. This is why my '56 fits in the garage of my house built in '56 but my '63 won't fit and my '78 won't even let you partially close the garage door.

When I heard atomic V8, I was thinking of how this engine could have worked, since I thought of the name as being the engine. There is a technology called magnetic targeted fusion, which can use pistons to cause a fusion reaction, much like a prototype reactor in Canada. If we go with fission, there is fragment fission which if used as an engine for space travel, uses movement to use the fission reaction instead of the traditional way.

As for the older cars, the ones seemingly from the 30's, you need to think of it in terms of what would still be working after EMP's. Those older cars would and likely had been in use for quite some time prior to the dweller exiting the vault. But, with them being older, the parts to keep them going properly would eventually run out as well whereas the newer ones such as the highway man would likely use at least similar enough comparable parts that they could be swapped out provided telhe cars hadn't been fried when the bombs dropped. As far as bumpers, what about the bumper swords you see in New Vegas? They came off of cars or trucks and are a decent enough example of people scavenging things off useless cars. It's metal. Also the cars you see in the walls, I wonder, would assume that they were also models that wouldn't explode or that those parts had been stripped.
