A friend of mine noticed a sketchy guy at a gas station one night. The guys started heading in his direction until my friend made eye contact with him and put his hand in his jacket pocket. He did not have his firearm, but he acted like he was staging a firearm in his jacket pocket and the guy turned away from him. Sometimes even just being aware can help you avoid trouble.

As a fellow veteran, I use a similar “Denny’s” scenario as a teaching tool also. Simple rule, people start getting loud and aggressive, and you don’t know the people involved, it’s time to go. Also scan the entire area before moving, just in case the loud interaction was being used as a distraction for some other action.

Function over fashion is an old school way of thinking that, in my opinion, needs to come back. So many men (and women for that matter) are worried about how they look vs actually being able to function in life that it deters them from being able to do menial tasks. Watched a guy in skinny jeans the other day try to pick up the keys hey dropped in Walmart….funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time😂

I used to carry a 1911 during winter but just continued to use Sig P365 XL. It just makes sense for comfort and capacity. I’m not going to miss the caliber. SD 9mm shows ballistics that equal 45ACP too so that was a selling point to me. The whole stopping power isn’t as real as some would like to think.

That said, as an instructor in this space I absolutely advocate for people finding the firearm with the right fit to enhance their capability 😉

Hey Mike, I officially qualified as an old guy this year, no not that year, add ten. This is great teaching. I've been shooting, reloading, casting my target ammo for somewhere around four decades. I've never had the budget to have a multiple choice EDC so dressing for carry has been paramount. Theses days I have more options, still dressing for carry. I recently subscribed as I recognize good protocols when I seen them, (okay, except for the Glock fan-boy stuff). Yes, I'd surely not turn one down, just never have owned one though have shot a few. I like 'em, not the grip angle. I'm good with what I have. Keep it coming and thanks.

For instance, I took my family out for lunch today and made eye contact and smiled with the other dads around me. Just a simple nod when shit goes down can cue up a team willing to protect those around you with no verbal communication.

And it fits with the clothes I wear in the summer along with winter. I agree 100% clothing matters. I tend to wear more form fitting clothes, t-shirts, flannels that are form fitting, and even more form fitting hoodies, with the Glock, I feel I still get the full size feel with NO imprint. Really love this kind of discussion. I've always struggled with deep winter carry options. Right now, the normal temperatures are lows at night in the negatives (-5F) to during the day as a high as (20F). You need to wear gloves when out, so how do you handle those scenarios effectively? Drop the gloves and use hand warmers and hands in pockets? I can carry shoulder holster under the coat, IWB or even OWB - not even a problem, there. It is more of how to deal, especially if there is potential of needing to respond quickly with the need to wear gloves to protect yourself from the elements.

In my younger days when I could only afford a few guns, I carried a 1911 on and off duty. I still carry one when I can (with how I’m dressed).

1 thing that always stuck with me as that if i am carrying, every fight i get in there is a gun involved. I always try to consider space from conflict so i can try to keep a fist fight from turning into a shooting.

Let me share this.... I coached baseball all the way up to minor league players.... we used to use a term "Muscle memory" I call it the light switch theory... without thinking you react accordingly... This is what MG is teaching.... Thought action reaction... good stuff

Had me in the first 3 minutes. On a small 160lb frame, winter cardhart type jacket wear, I can keep a 1911 under a left arm shoulder rig. I did this over several years, so it's instinctive and not unnatural at all. (Side note: I have had bigger guys say "you move fast" as I place several fist bumps on their chest.) Not all about the steel. I encourage anybody to experiment , mostly inside the house, with their options. .... not chambered, but full mag allowed.. "potential" Pre engagement staging is always an active group of decisions. Head on a swivel. As if you needed my comments.....

I’ve noticed this too. I’m a small built, 170, 5’8. I can move faster than most of the bigger guys

I've done both 1:00 and 3:30 carry and have settled on 3:30 in order to blade myself to the possible threat in order to conceal the draw. Plus blading my body allows me to have my gun farthest from the bad guy and use my leveraging arm of needed. I'm also 5'8"/160 and my wife pointed out many times carrying appendix that when the wind blew she could see the outline of my gun. This is from the person who knows I home carry and will accidentally bump my gun giving me a hug and say she didn't realize I had it on me.

Blading is great in a head on scenario, but what if someone comes from any other direction? I understand your logic and what works for you, keep doing it cuz atleast you’re carrying. I carry appendix because there is next to 0% chance of someone getting it out of my holster even in a wresting match. It keeps everything in front of me where I can protect it. If you print more, you probably need to invest in a better holster like a tier 1 concealed. I have half a dozen or more holster I’ve tried and can now carry my “Gucci” glock 19 very easily. I’m 6’ 165lbs, so I have zero hips which means anything other than appendix prints like no other.

Love what you do Mike, buy I would love to see something that shows what a guy at a construction company can do to to carry. Wearing clothes is one thing having to have a tool pouch is another
