It is awfully hard to sing a song that was so popular like Differebt Drum which was first popular with the beautiful voice of Linda Ronstadt, but Carrie Underwood did an amazing job with this one. Just beautiful.

RIP to Mike Nesmith of The Monkees, who wrote this song. Mike always travelled to the beat of a different drum.

Nitpick alert - Linda's isn't the original version. It was first written/performed by Mike Nesmith.

Many find it necessary to compare her to Linda which really isn’t necessary. She does a fantastic job with it and her version should be enjoyed for its own merits; after all, it is a TRIBUTE to Linda Ronstadt, not a competition with her.

Exactly. Carrie was the perfect choice to sing this song as a tribute to Linda who is one of a kind. So is Carrie in her own right. One day someone will be honoring Carrie at the Kennedy Honors by singing one of her songs and I hope it is as good of a cover as she did for Linda.

The entire “CBS Orchestra” (David Letterman’s house band) is the backing band here. In addition to Paul Schaffer, the band members are Will Lee on bass, Felicia Collins on Guitar, Sid McGinnis on slide guitar and Anton Fig on drums.

You only need to hear her perform the Sound of Music to realize she's a couple of notches down from Julie Andrews. Ronstadt is still alive and not an anarchist. I was fortunate to see Linda Ronstadt and the Stone Poneys back in the 60's sing this song live. I was in love with her by the time the song was over and still am.

A truly stunning version of this great Michael Nesmith tune & the first song that turned me onto that clear as crystal voice of Linda's way back in the mid 60s. ❤

Amazing job considering how different they sound. Two unique talents. Linda is tied for my favorite female vocalist of all time with Karen Carpenter. I cried when Karen died and I cried when I heard that Linda couldn't perform anymore.
