Carreras/Baltsa- Cavalleria Duet- 1987

Jose Carreras and Agnes Baltsa deliver a beautifully sung and very "verismo" rendition of the fiery Turiddu/Santuzza duet from Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana.

This is fantastic thank you operabeauty. There is real respect and affection between these two. Baltsa was one of the few people Carreras allowed to visit him backstage before his come back concert in Barcelona 21 July 1988.

Baltsa did have a very developed chest register, but also headvoice/falsetto register to balance it. She was still singing pretty well into her 60's as I recall. I cannot imagine I know the opera or how it should go better than the composer.

This singing seems to fit the High Romanticism of the opera exactly, strong even to roughness, siccome s'amano gli esseri humani....

Her voice is reminiscent of Bruna Rasa here who sang it with Gigli and Mascagni conducting.

If you compare the relative vocal homogeniety of her early performances, you'll find that later the voice broke into 2voices. The lower register is always dry and hard and used very high in the voice, 'gear shifts' are ALWAYS audible; when singing long high lines with Carrears you can hear her top register is small. moreover, she has very clear, almost spoken, diction in the chest register while she glosses over the diction higher up. She interprets with passion but without vocal art.

She might want to, but Baltsa had a light mezzo soprano voice with a forced chesty open bottom which she developed to attempt to tackle the heavy mezzo repertoire, Lina Bruna Rasa had a big thick heavy soprano voice with a rich bottom register, also very open but the sound had much more body. I don't think Mascagni was a good conductor, he let the tempo drag all over the place (or maybe he was just very old).

@mcmulj00 Whatever! you just can't understand ... BTW 'you're' is the contracted form of you are, what you need is the possessive adjective 'your'

@CzarDodon you miss the point of art and passion completely -- her art is magnificent -- verismo is not always about "gentle, pretty" production -- its about PASSION .... and this woman has that

@mcmulj00 I'd like to remind you that this began with you attacking me, and I haven't read any discussion from you since we started this silly banter. If you really want to discuss something you should start by being civil. What is it you want to discuss? My position was clear enough from the beginning: verismo is passionate of course, but it should not be an excuse for this type of interpretation which is really an unsuccessful attempt at masking serious vocal flaws.

@mcmulj00 no point in explaining, it's obvious your approach is primitive, just as you feel the need to write passion in block capitals, you can only feel it if it's screaming at you. Whatever floats you boat. There is much more to be soughtif you have the sensitivity to perceive it. The capacity to express a broad range of emotional and musical values is what I look for in an artist, not just pretty things or powerful passion, not just musical correctness, its a blend of all facets.

@CzarDodon ....let's see (yes - that is the correct use of the apostrophe), forgive me for the typo -- it seems your limited knowledge leaves you with a simple-minded approach to what is clearly -- whether you like it or not is fine, however, that fact that you don't (another apostrophe) like it does not make it wrong, it makes it something that you don't like .... i've been a professional musician for over 30 years, have been schooled in various styles, and teach music --

Yes, I've heard her live. By vocal art I mean how she interpreted at the outset of her career, before Karajan led her out of her natural fach; vocal art might be described as interpreting from the music and not simply applying a layer of emotional emphasis over the music, Emphasis is of course needed in verismo but playing only that card is cheap, vulgar and soon becomes generic, boring and ultimately irritating.

...it's quite clear from your (no apostrophe) attacks, rather than discussion, and of all things, your concern about apostrophes, that your scope (knowledge?) is limited....sorry for you
