It's so hard to know, almost everyone's voice is modified in the studio or even onstage. When you put Karen's voice through the diagnostics, she basically had perfect pitch. In fact, she often was better live versus the recording. Definitely the most beautiful lyric contralto voices.

There could be; however, though we thought the studio stranglehold was bad, seems the new reality is worse, at least for big stuff. Winston Leighton she was special but you need to dig deeper my friend, Carol King ( wrote almost of her music, her husband wrote about 5 songs because in that day they wouldn’t look at Carols talent) anyway of course I’m a woman ha ha ) so check out Carol, Joni Mitchell, gee bud just google best 10 female artist of early 70’s 👍👍👍

@@roystonboodoo7525 Sure. But didn't other singers have similar skills? Of course, when comparing the voices of singers at this level, one must be careful to compare at similar ages. For example, it isn't fair to compare the current Barbra Streisand with the late Karen Carpenter. Carpenter was at her peak while Streisand is decades past it. Even though she still has a spectacular voice.

Even the birds listened when Karen sang! Only Yesterday still remains the biggest-selling Carpenter's hit here in the UK. Karen's alto voice was absolutely flawless. Her breath control, caramel smooth tone, intonation and the sheer feminine whisper to her voice - aswell as the trademark sadness that could be heard in her voice, made her both in a sense unique and absolutely breathtaking. Her voice was a knockout! Very, very few artists stand out as exceptional and unique in their style whilst making the whole business of singing appear effortless; Patsy Cline, Linda Rondstadt, Sinead O' Connor, Dusty Springfield and above all of them Karen Carpenter to name a few. Karen truly had, I believe the most beautiful voice of the last century. She wasn't a powerhouse singer with a seven-octave range - she just sang a song beautifully! RIP Karen - 'Only Yesterday?' Karen, I could describe forever and a day, whilst at the same time, she was totally indescribable. Both said artists were sheer magic. So well said and I couldn't agree more. Not only did you hear her sing, you felt her sing. My God, I miss her still today. As a young teenager, The Carpenters were some of the first albums I bought with babysitting earnings. I would sit and listen to her perfect vocals, trying in vain to duplicate them, having to be satisfied with harmonizing with her instead. She was wonderful, absolutely.

When I was a little girl, I use to pray to God to give me her voice. She is the best.

She had the voice of an angel, the disease she had back then would not have gone unnoticed today

In my opinion, the Greatest Female singer that ever lived!!!! was and is Karen Carpenter. Absolutely, no one else had a voice like Karen. The music she made with her brother Richard is timeless and will touch the hearts of people forever!!!!!

There is no other female vocals that come close to Karen's..Here sound is so unique. I love all the songs she created and just think of what we missed out on of what she would of put out had things been different. I am a huge KISS fan and loved the 80's hair metal bands. So this just tells ya how good her vocals are, I think shes the best.

I loved Karen. Her voice was the best. The real emotions. No flash. No hype. No damn computer enhanced sound manipulation. Just Karen herself. I wish I could have met her, told her she was the best, she was real, she was really pretty, really special. She was only 8 years older than me. I would have married her if she said yes, we could have had children, and she would still be alive, and happy today. I truly regret that I never saw her perform live. I still vividly remember sitting at my work desk in 1983, hearing about her death. I was shocked. Thirty seven years later, today, I play Superstar and Rainy Days incessantly. RIP, lovely Karen.

When I was deep in my anorexia I used to listen to this and cry for what Karen would never have and for what I wasn't able to have either. Like Karen I also went into full arrest but did manage to survive. Many times I have had survivors guilt but I try to make the most of life now and help those still suffering. Full recovery from eating disorders is possible. I have been able to do it and so have many others. Please don't ever give up.

@@MusicLover-ij7vf - thanks. after 15 years of a severe eating disorder I no longer have eating disorder thoughts or behaviors. I do suffer physical consequences though of seizures , loss of gallbladder, digestive issues and multiple sclerosis. many people with severe long-term eating disorders have developed autoimmune disorders. I used to tell myself my eating disorder wasn't that bad but I just couldn't see clearly. Please don't fall for that trap. Eating disorders kill and have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness including depression

I'm in tears now though because I just found out yesterday the sister of an old college friend just died. I knew her well but it has been so long since I have seen her sister. not to sound religious oh, but it reminds me of the one lamb that was lost that Jesus went after. unfortunately it's one more that died from this horrific disease. If anyone reading this has even with they think are eating "issues", please get help. don't ever give up. Please. Recovery is possible. I have done it and so have many others. You can do it too

@Sandra Kenny Karen was not that good of a drummer. Her drumming was very basic. Her desire to drum was probably an act of condescension, because I am certain that she knew what a great singer she was. How could she not? And if I am right, why would she want to keep that beautiful voice from the rest of the world? Was she doing us a favor? If that was the case why did she take singing lessons? Was she a prisoner to the will of her brother? I don't buy into that. But I agree with everything else you said. Nice post. RIP Karen.

I was a kid when she sung On top of the world which made me interested in them and looking forward to the song being played on the radio. Then for 8th grade graduation the graduates sung the song "We've only just begun" not even knowing she was having eating disorder that was in 1978. I don't know if the song came out that year for sure but we did a great job wowing the parents & grandparents.

Yes - I am sad everytime I think of her - just the other day at work I mentioned her. She and her brother were great together. I had forgotten about this song until earlier this year.

I thank God for that! I can close my eyes and listen to her voice and be taken to a place that is beautiful and good....

In my humble opinion the best female voice of all time! Her music, voice and personal story creates conflict with ones emotions. Makes you happy and sad at the same time and makes you wish you had a time machine so you could travel back in time to give her a hug and tell her you love her just the way she is!

This is simply perfection. Karen's vocals are immaculate and the instrumental arrangement is so versatile. Just listen to it, how those instruments follow each other.

I was a senior in high school and driving home from school when the news came over the radio she had passed. It wasn't cool for a guy my age back then to admit they loved their music, but I sure did.

I wish Karen loved herself, as much as we all loved her!

I grew up in a pub and I used to fall asleep upstairs in my bedroom to the sound of her incredible soothing angelic like voice on the Jukebox, Yesterday Once More, Top of the World! I was around 10 years old and listening to her voice made the World seem like a happy place then. Such a shame she died so young as I’m sure she would still be performing today!

Of all of their Masterpieces, this 1 tops them all.

I'm 61 years old and have heard every voice in the world and Karen is the best by far. Other voices bring me joy and appreciation for music but only Karen brings me goose bumps and tears in my eyes like karen

She was the best female singer to come out of the 1970s and of course of all time. In my humble opinion

I'm listening to Only Yesterday August 2023 I could listen to Karen all day long, her voice is so beautiful. She was so very talented! Her voice was one of a kind,If she were alive just think of all the more beautiful music we would've gotten to enjoy! RIP Karen Carpenter ❤

And she didn't need auto-tune! Unlike many of today's singers.

I remember the day she died. When my mom picked us up from school, they announced it on the radio. Tragic!! Karen Carpenter has the most incredible voice. Nobody has ever come close to matching her vocal range. A unique and majestic gift to the world. Such a tragic loss !!!!!! Always miss you.

Most of her songs (to me) seems like she was longing for a relationship with that someone she had not found yet. She had the most soothing and calming voice. I can’t imagine the success she would have have if she was around longer. She was a raw natural beautiful woman. If only she could of seen herself as we do.

Yes, and I find it to be sadly ironic that for all of the beautiful and romantic love songs that she graced the world with that she never found anyone to truly love her.

Karen had the purest voice...effortless and so beautiful.

Her voice was so awesome! So sad she left this world so young! Her music lives on forever!

You can see the beginnings of Anorexia here in her presence. She was a gift to us from God. God bless you for all eternity, Karen. I used to listen to her tapes at night in, Vietnam, when I had the chance. She was a real source of solace for me, a contrast to the brutality and harsh conditions of war. She has a very special place in my heart.

Richard's vocals and musical brilliance have always blown me away. He and Karen were a powerhouse together.

I was 12 years old when I discovered The Carpenters, they have surely helped me get through some of the toughest times..I am turning 50 next year, and I still enjoy listening to their music. I love all 70s soft and classic rock..simply the best ❤️

The Carpenters Only Yesterday is very comfortable with a beautiful singing voice and a sound that resonates with the heart. Personally, I feel refreshed every time I listen to it.

Everything she ever recorded was tune and tone perfect. Her voice was a gift that was sadly taken away too soon.

I agree. I watched a programme last night about Adele: the modern Goddess. I can admire her voice and its strength but I so don't like it. She strangles her vowels and, although her lyrics are vulnerable, and that is unusual in this age of female empowerment and overt sexuality, I don't feel it in her voice. I do in Karen's. OK, she does not write her own songs but her voice expresses every nuance of every song she sings. I think it is difficult. Adele is lauded because she stands still and sings. Well, actually, most singers did that in the not-too-distant past: Carole, Dusty, Sandy, Cilla, Lulu, Karen, Linda, Olivia, Esther, Joni, Judy, Dionne, Janis, Bonny and others. They stood there in a dress or little top and trousers they might have bought from Dottie P and sang because they were singers. We seem to have lost that concept. To give Adele credit she has resurrected it but she can't touch Karen when it comes to nuanced emotion..

31 years ago yesterday we all lost Karen. As time goes on, it hurts even more to hear her voice; so much music lost in all those years since. Her singing was unmistakable; everyone knew Karen's voice, it was so, so special. I hope the angels appreciate Karen's singing as much as we did. When my time comes, (I'm 65, so I won't live forever) if I'm lucky enough to be going there, I hope Karen is singing, since I'd know her voice anywhere

Luck has nothing to do with it - it's faith in Jesus Christ's sacrifice on the cross for our sins, but I won't grind my axe for too long. As to "your time coming", don't you feel it's accelerating exponentially? I sure do. When I was in my teens and twenties, things seemed to stay the same, for the most part. People I loved were always there. Now everything seems to change at a rapid pace, and many that I have loved are gone, and each day seems to be waiting for the shoe to drop, as opposed to optimism.

The greatest singer ever .....no more no less!! A voice beyond compare.

Down cellar, I used to pretend I was singing this with David Cassidy. I was 14. Now I’m 62. I still do the same thing.😁❤

Karen indeed had the perfect voice for pop music. However Karen didn't have a 4 octave range. She was a solid contralto, the lower register of an alto. She could never sing soprano. The late Minnie Riperton had a bonafide 4 octave range though.

Anthony, best ever vocalist I agree. Am very honored that God told me via two medical professionals that I looked like her, 12 years apart. Many years later looked her up shocked that I was her double, her elegant version since always wanted for modeling & known as a “10”. When God tells you something, listen, it’s GOD trying to get our attention, no coincidences in life!!!
