She is an EXCELLENT drummer and is typically singing and playing drums at the same time! She didnt play drums in this song, but she did for a lot of songs. A little research reveals she was a killer drummer.

@@Coowallsky yes, when you consider singing as a drummer, that is excellent. Very few drummers can sing and drum together. Have you ever seen the video of her playing a long solo?

@@stephenwhite5444 No there have been several drummers that sing and drum. Her drumming skills were not excellent as Hal Blaine did much of their studio drum work.

  • @stephenwhite5444

@@Coowallsky that has more to do with the recording environment where you don't record drums and lead vocals on the same mic. They put the drums in a soundproof room so it's not picked up by other mics, it allows them to have different instruments in different channels and adjust volume of them independently to get the sound just right. Sure they could record her doing one thing then another, but typically most bands prefer playing together. She often did play drums at the live performances and would often do a long drum exhibition. In their later albums she suffered greatly from anorexia (which she died from) and probably didnt have the strength to drum an entire set, at that point they started bringing a drummer to shows as well, even then they would still do a pretty awesome drum duet, but I suspect she lost the stamina to drum and sing and entire show. You should probably research some of her drumming solos, especially the older b&w recordings.

Love it that you checked this one out! In a live setting she always sang it live but her and her brother pre- recorded all the background vocals that if you listen closely you can hear Karen on at least 2 more vocals and her brother singing 2 or three as well giving it that full sound! To me Karen’s voice was one that I really haven’t heard anyone really close to her rich alto vocals. Even the girl that has released some covers! Though close to the sound it’s just not quite there in my opinion! Thanks again, Karen my voice crush, ❤ low bass Kenneth ❤

Early 1975...just when I thought the Carpenters were done getting hits...they released this gem and sored to #4 on the charts...they were the prince and princess of pop music, they appealed to all ages...and I miss Karen so much, she was like the girl next door who could sing your socks off with emotion and heart like nobody else, most of whom were screaming.... The oboe and English Horn were trademark sound of almost all Carpenters hits. in the studio Karen and Richard sang all harmonies together, in layers.

Maggie, you know talent. Im in my 60s and remember Carpenters well. Herb Alpert heard Karen's voice on a demo in 1969 and signed her brother, Richard, and her to A&M records. Karen received 3 or 4 Grammys in the 70s and sold over 80 million records by 1982. She was 1975 rock drummer of the year according to Playboy. KC had the most beautiful voice-ever, and perhaps THE best female vocalist-ever, because she compels you to listen as she sings in perfect pitch to you, not at you, with emotion and enunciation. No auto-tune or gimmicks. No professional voice or drum instruction. She was known by the studios as 'one take'. She rarely, if ever, sang more than one take of any song. She was also the ONLY female harmony/background voice in all her songs. She was truly born with an incredible singing talent. Documentaries point out the accolades to her voice, such as, Paul McCartney said she had the most angelic voice after hearing her sing 'Ticket To Ride'. John Lennon ran into her at an LA restaurant and told her "you have a fabulous voice, luv". Supposedly Frank Sinatra stated that Karen was the only singer he'd pay to hear. I recommend songs such as, Yesterday Once More, Solitaire, This Masquerade, Rainy Days And Mondays, Need To Be In Love, Hurting Each Other, I Can Dream Cant I (you've must hear this 1939 ballad ! ), Crescent Noon, Ordinary Fool, Close To You, We've Only Just Begun, A Place To Hideaway, and A Song For You. KC never knew true love. Her few friends included Olivia Newton John and Dionne Warwick. 5'3" KC really lost weight, due to anorexia, in earnest beginning in 1975. She died in Feb 1983 at age 32 due to heart complications from anorexia

There is a 20 year old woman out there who is a Karen tribute artist, that you should hear to compare and contrast. Her name is Tori Holub, and she partners with Jim Wilkas (AKA Jim the Midi Doctor) to cover the Bacharach David Medley, and We've only Just Begun. She also covers Heart, and Olivia Newton-John, and has a few originals and other Carpenters shorts. My guess is you will soon get a patreon who want's yo to hear her too.
