Could be that they meant it was the best version, video quality-wise, of that 2018 production. I personally prefer the concepts and overall feel of the 1994 version, as you also do, and the (extremely talented) cast members I was able to meet were gracious and friendly. Some even came to ride the Central Park carousel when I was the operator/attendant. Everyone seemed to know that production was conceived with “outside the box”ideas and innovative revolutionary approaches.

I sat in the fourth row of this production as a teenager, coming in with no prior knowledge of what I was about to experience. Every second of this was seared into my brain and I was obsessed with it afterwards. It is one of my most favorite theater-going experiences in my life (although my one regret is that Audra was out that day). I wore out a cassette tape of the production in the subsequent years. Thank you for capturing some of the pure magic that happened here.

As long as we’re mentioning the orchestra, I’ve always loved the unexpected authentic-sounding “band organ” effect at the 3:56 mark in the “Carousel Waltz”. I’ve worked at carousels and have been also a collector of that music and I applaud the simulation with the woodwinds, percussion and so forth. I noticed on the 1993 London cd it was orchestrated more briskly and differently, but still interesting. I love the emphasis and strident quality in this version’s sound and tempo, and this video certainly does it justice.🎪🎠

@@allenjones3130 Eddie Korbich, who went on to play scuttle in the Broadway production of “The Little Mermaid”, did a fine job on “Geraniums” and so did Clive Rowe in the 1993 London staging. The only number cut from the 1993 & 1994 stagings was Billy’s “The Highest of Judge of All” although I’d like to think Michael Hayden sang it in a stage production he performed when he was younger. Also “When the Children Are Asleep” didn’t have its middle “when children are awake” verse Carrie sings, and I once asked Audra Mc Donald if director Nicholas Hytner would consider putting it back in, but I guess it was cut solely for time reasons. Regarding “Geraniums” the 2018 revival surprisingly did not use the song and also cut “Stonecutters Cut It On Stone”. Anyway, as far as “Geraniums”, it’s sadly missing from the original 1945 cast recording, and not in the 1956 film soundtrack album either, but it can be heard on the NY Phil concert dvd (Jason Danieley) and also on some of the studio cast vinyl and cd recordings which are available. As long as we’re at it, at this time there is still no definitive recorded version of “Carousel” which is complete to have all the songs, dance music and instrumentals in one place, but soon there is going to be a new more complete “Oklahoma!” (with Sierra Boggess) on cd…so hopefully the same will be done with “Carousel” to do full justice to all the songs, dance music and other instrumentals in the entire show. I’m partial to certain recordings but I’ll be the first to admit they all have their own merits. In the meantime we can certainly enjoy all the recordings which are presently available, and each offer examples of fine singing and distinctive orchestrations, as well as varied staging concepts … at times all of these offer different ways of interpreting the show, its characters and the overall feeling of various productions.

2:00:37 one of the greatest coups de theatre as the song moves into Incidental Music with a huge lowering of tonalities. The lights dim, allowing the "corpse double" of Billy to be borne away, and the Heavenly Friend delivers the piercing injuction: "Get up, Billy." One of the best moments in musical theatre.

There is something few people know. They offered the role of Nettie for Barbara Cook who rejected it saying that wasnt for her voice so they cast the great operatic singer Shirley Verrett in the role. If Barbara had played Nettie she would have been the only actress to play all the female Carousel roles Carrie Julie and Nettie. Audra Mc Donald received the first of her 6 Tony Awards as feautured actress for her performance as Carrie in this production.

The first was in 2017 by Tim Carter: “Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel” in the keynotes series by Oxford University Press. So while yes, it would have been an actual camcorder that recorded this, it's not like it was unprecedented by then to record things. Often, from what I understand, during this time there was a bit of a Broadway bootlegging network, with a group of people going to the show, sitting in a section together, while the person in the middle filmed and the rest sat guard.
