Our University System is broken.

Caroline Mutoko, I respect you for being raw and authentic! Our Education system has failed so many, I included. I did my undergraduate in Kenya in a private university, and it was more or less the same. The funny thing is we would study for our exams one week before the exam date, and we would get A's because if you were good in cramming, then you are safe. I carried this habit to the UK, did my BA and MBA in the UK, and the types of questions I got were, for instance, "Discuss education policies in Kenya based on the breaking news last night". meaning if you did not watch news you will not have a clue as to what happened, these type of assignments were eventually added to your final grades, this taught students to watch news, read, read and read about current affairs, it taught us to be relevant, we were always on our toes, there was nothing to cram as you wouldn't even know what to expect in the exam, so you have to read widely, books, business newspapers, use 'Google" to read the right content and not the Kardashians etc. It woke me up and changed my thinking. This brings me back to your topic "Kenya is abroad" I think it was worth starting the discussion, and it is true we are brats. But perhaps, it is safe to argue that in terms of education, infrastructure, IT, efficiency and effectiveness in business, business ethics, we have a long way to go and "we can only know how dirty our house is once we have stepped outside and see how clean someone else's house is" and bring this changes back home.

greatest thing I have heard out of 2017.You know what..this is exactly the same reason I dropped out of my postgraduate corporate communication studies. The units were stuck in pre 2005, and we were in 2015. I once explored the Shell gulf of mexico oil spill in an open essay on corporate ethics and the lecturer dismissed it since she wasnt aware of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. It was the latest ethical crisis at that time but may be the only corporate crisis the lecturer had in mind was the 2001 Enron scandal which she had used as case study when teaching. They dont allow you to go out of the box and use other related examples outside what they teach. After being confined to a box for almost a year, I gave up. I agree with you. The university system is stagnant, uncreative, does not encourage out of the box ideas outside what the professors know. They think knowledge starts and stops with them

You brought the latest but it was shallow, not detailed enough. I know of an imaginary case study that got an A in an assignment but with a comment from the lecturer that they couldn't find it but looks well researched.

Being a student at the University of Nairobi I concur owing to the fact that I have gained more knowledge that is usable in today's world. The knowledge I am learning today can only be referenced. People ask why am so good at what I do I replay Street University. Same applies to my friend who has won film awards both home and abroad without stepping feet into any film class until recently when he needed a degree because of society

This was the most important conversation to be had in like ages.. I don't know why we haven't had it yet. I have always been an education enthusiast until the Kenyan university took that away from me... And I have to say, It's a sad country we live in where one media personality makes a lot more sense than just about the whole parliament plus the unknown policy makers.. I love your conversations Caroline. So true, so fresh, so enlightening. The conversations that Really need to be had. I salute you. Oh and Happy New Year!

I couldn't agree more Caroline. About 7 years ago I spoke to a Vet Student at the University Of Nairobi and he told me about the demigods of the universities in Kenya otherwise known as Dons. Very stagnated Dons. He just had to leave the country for the knowledge he wanted! My heart goes out to the graduates of today because they are obsolete as you say, but my heart of hearts goes out to the future of this country. God bless Kenya though!

I second you in that. Most lecturers teach units based on what they know, not how the world is changing. Personally, i hated how i was taught video editing at a certain university. I had to go on KZread to know and learn what i really needed to know and not what the lecturer thought was "important".

Caroline Mutoko, this is great! I studied engineering at the University of Nairobi for one year and decided to leave. The education system is advancing at such a slow pace compared to private and foreign universities and the main reason is the fact that the administration never changes, the vice chancellor has held on to that power for so long. I hope to lead change in the education system one lecture at a time after getting my PhD. Thank you for sharing this video!

Universities have become pipes of information instead of pools of knowledge and insight. Graduates are information-loaded but lacking in wisdom - the wisdom to question, ask the right questions (eternal curiosity), and solve problems birthed in the new economy.

After hearing you more than once state that 'simply starting a new business doesn't make you an entrepreneur', I had to confirm what I have already learnt from the various business schools I have attended. According to the Oxford dictionary, an entrepreneur is a person who sets up a business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit. To put it simply an entrepreneur is synonymous to a businessman/woman. Differentiating the offering through value addition or targeting a specific market could also make you an entrepreneur. Apart from the slight misnomer, I do concur with the rest of your remarks.

An education system that does not teach its students how to think critically, solve problems, become leaders especially in difficult situations and understand the meaning of financial literacy is a total waste of public and private citizen's resources as well as the students' precious time.

This resonates with me in ways I can't even believe to express. I have been telling people in my life that I feel cheated, that the "education" I got was just papers, you know KCPE, KSCE, a degree. I have certificates from Alliance Française de Nairobi and they are much more valuable than those three combined. So yes our education system is broken! We need to understand our worth and demand for better!

If there's anything that needs rigorous and constant assessment it's an education system. It has to serve both contemporary needs of a society and be visionary. Our students must be trained for global competitiveness in every sector too! If a country's government isn't willing to provide this, we have to demand it. Professionals that have had to seek further training post-university to be competent for positions that they should have otherwise been equipped for from various degrees of formal education have to come through for their juniors and shame the system. Professors that have to work with little to no facilities need to be honest and stop enabling this system . This is 2017, but our educational system in no way reflects the present or even attempts to prep us for the future. Thanks Caroline for highlighting this absurdity!!!

By the way, In my opinion if there has to be change in relevancy it needs to start from the roots. Otherwise as it has been said a building without strong foundation will collapse. What teachers are learning to teach at the university or at the training colleges, should reflect the change that is needed in Kenyan schools all the way to the universities. At the moment I am doing a teaching course and what I am learning is that a teacher's,of this century, task is to only provide a learning environment whether digitally or physically. Students should be autonomous no matter how young they are. An American motivational speaker said: The first step in solving a problem is to recognize that it exists. Clearly, more people see it exists. It is just a matter of time before all these ripples create a big wave.

Thus we have at least 40 % rate of unemployment currently as we speak. Sad enough, we expect it to rise in the next four years. Reason being we were never taught to be innovators but rather sheepish laborers. We run away from problems. For the same reason I dropped out of college and four years later I have joined one of the best private universities here in Nairobi. It's sad. I appreciate the talk Carol.

After completing a full course in accounting at the university we were still being thought how to do account entries,i quit and because to me it was a waste of time and money i think am fine with the CPA rather than a decorated paper called a degree.

The purpose of education is not to bring you to up to date with what is happening in the rest of the world. Moi university might, not might but has failed but the main reason of pursuing tertiary education is for you to learn the concept, be it a case study of 1962 or 1901 its relevant so long as you get it. Its to measure if your going to get it, You wanted an MBA that fits a media practitioner. It doesn't work that way, the program should be as diverse as possible to allow graduates fit in various roles after graduation. For that reason I will tell employers to hire graduates from a particular school in Moi University not all the schools, schools with the least number of parallel students

By the way this is not about Nairobi University but the world education system. Kenya used to have a great education system where we were made to think but we seem to have adopted the American system which is more about indoctrination of the mind by holding them captive to the system agenda. I did my LLb degree form the university of London and one of the things they discouraged was cramming. They would have a red herring in a question to test that. Then I did my masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy in the USA and I as shocked that even in graduate school they have multiple questions in the exams, something that I last did in elementary school in Kenya. I put the professors on the spot most of the time because I questioned the theories preached to us in the lectures. People were comfortable to just listen and accept what the professor taught or the books said without question and so I was not popular. You are expected to think inside a box and anything outside that box is not accepted. I had wanted to do my PHD but after that I decided it was not worth my time and effort.

Caroline, while I agree we need to improve our university education, does that one aspect of continuous improvement present the entire university system? Does your finding of UoN present the universities in Kenya? Is the finding in that one department a statistical representation of all departments at UoN? Are all lecturers in that department of UoN using outdated notes? Finally, do you appreciate the line between academic and professional courses?

Hahaha!! Well, I remember having a conversation with my High School Class teacher regarding the same, not so long ago. She was adamant that there was a lesson to be learnt from the 8-4-4 system. Saldy I did not share her optimism. My opinion was validated when I went to Campus where University Dons require you to regurgitate information as you have consumed it within various volumes. There is no room for anything other than what THEY understand. It is utter Bull!! And this is after going through one of the alleged 'best' Engineering courses in the country.

The whole education system needs to revamp. The teachers and those old dons who think in the medieval times need to put up with the current time. It's so pathetic how majority of some 'graduates' once they get jobs have no idea on what they ought to do. Poor skills and no innovation. Kenyans should demand for the best and not settle for less. Challenge those teachers n dons but don't worship them. Keep them on their toes. Students should be taught to understand but not to cram for the examination, otherwise schools and institutions have turned out to be businesses.

I hate the University system in Kenya. Units teach you nothing for the job. An MBA from UON is a waste of money and time. One is better of watching Simon Sinek.
