Carolina Traveler: Amphicar

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A car made to run on land and in the water, actually sold back in the 1960s.
But that was a long time ago, until one man got ahold of one, a man who was "good with tools".
So the Carolina Traveler buckled in one day for the first running, all-in, seeing if we would literally sink or swim

I like how old school the car looks and that's a cool feature to drive it around in water.

I was lucky enough to see one of these floating around in a local lake in the early 90s when I was a kid

Neighbor still has two of these he has owned since the early 70s. Red one and an orange one. Used to take them out on the lake here all the time. Haven't seen them outside the garage in about 20 years. Always a huge crowd gathered round when he drove them into the lake.

I literally just saw an amphicar in Dover NH about 5 minutes ago at the intersection by the Dover ice rink/Mr. Mikes gas station! Cool little car, wonder if it’s this one, identical paint color, wheels, trim, everything…

Disney Springs has a restaurant named "The Boathouse" which offers rides around the lake to paying customers in one of their 8 flawless Amphicars. It is the coolest thing imagineable. Captain Adrian was very knowledgeable and provided a wonderful highlight to a recent vacation.

I would love to go to a lake with one of these and everybody else spends 10 minutes unhooking their boats and stuff and I'm just like "hey boys how's it going"

I'm from Worcester MA. We had a dealership, called "Village Rambler" that had a couple of these on the lot. We had a Rambler American Custom Cross-Country Wagon that we used to have serviced there. The mechanic took me for a ride in a white one. I was 5 y.o. We didn't go into the water though! I remember the propellers in the area of the exhaust pipes. Not practical for our highly salted environment, but a neat idea none the less.

Oh, & BTW this was Summer o' '63. "Village Rambler" eventually became an American Motors dealership. The garage is now a Morgan Goodwill store & the showroom became New England Roast Beef, a sandwich shop. I'll always remember the Amphi's parked in the lot. There was a white one & a red one. My mum said that weren't practical, but they looked good to a 5 y.o. me. Nice to see one up & about!

Here is the burning question .... Who called the cops. Sherifs/ game wardens don't normally go out on lakes unless they are called or looking for people fishing without licence.

These were quite popular in the 60's. A friend of mine had one. Why did the cop stop them? This is what the car was made for. The cop gave them a warning, I would love to know the reason other that having a historic plate.

No life preservers. Bothering people about having enough life preservers and checking to see if they're s**tfaced drunk are the two things all Lake & River Cops consider to be their life's mission.

I get a kick out of everyones reaction. An old thing becomes new and unusual. I guess growing up by the shore this was not too unusual. What was unusual was having calm waters where these car owners could drive them in the bay. It is said only 400 hundred were made... I cant believe it because I know four that are in the NE, NY and NJ. I still laugh at the skepticism and the shocked reactions they had during this video.

Got a ride in one once, right place at the right time. And since I knew what it was, that may be as much fun as the ride, watching the reactions on onlooker's faces at the lunatic driving into the water.
