Floating Fun: The History of the Amphibious Boat Car

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A classic car connaisseur dives into the general history of amphibious cars and vehicles. When dit people start to build boat-car crossovers? What made Hans Trippel's Amphicar 770 and the Gibbs Aquada so special? And why don't you see a lot of amphibious automobiles out on the road and water these days?

I used to pump gas for a marina and maybe once or twice a season, someone who lived on the lake would take their Amphicar out onto the water for the evening. I even filled their tank once when they pulled up to eat at the restaurant the marina was a part of. It always brought a smile to everyone's face when they saw it.

Yeah, I don’t even know why Amphicar didn’t start with fiberglass in the first place. The number one killer of those already rare cars is rust. Since a lot of transverse engine cars have an output shaft to the rear for part time AWD, I would think it shouldn’t be too hard to adapt that layout to a rear engine Amphicar.

Ed cited several good reasons that amphibious cars aren't more common, but I'll add one more: The use case for them is rather specialized. Unless you live in a rice paddy or you *really* want to avoid that toll bridge across the river, you really don't need an amphibious car that's practical enough to use every day. Like Ed said, they'll mostly be toys for the affluent. Kind of like most boats, actually.

Have a relative who owns 3 Amphicars. I've been in them a few times and here's a few observations: 1) Real world top speed was about 45 mph. 2) At the inside bottom of each door was an additional pressure latch, not unlike an old cooler. Fail to lock them and you'd sink. Amphicars didn't have a ton of freeboard. 3) The electrical systems were, surprisingly, more dependable than a Triumph Herald's. 4) Next to driving into or out of water, the most fun was waiting to after you left the lake and hit a stop light, then turned on the bilge pumps (again) to clear out the settled water in the engine compartment. Be ready for people behind you jumping out of their cars thinking you're dumping gasoline. 5) The brakes and steering on the water were very nearly as effective as they were on the land (not very).

A friend of mine had an Amphicar in the 80's. Sadly, it was rusted, not horribly, but enough that we knew not to take it in the water. Very interesting mechanically, not so much aesthetically. It was one of those "I'll get around to fixing it someday" vehicles, and he ended up selling it. As always, Ed, your reviews are not only spot on, but your humor is quite funny! Side note: when Hans Tripple was mentioned, I thought 'hey that name sounds familiar', only to find that he was the designer of the Amphicar. I *knew* I'd heard that name!

Pointless trivia, one of the reasons Amphicars failed was they were inadequately rustproofed from the factory, resulting in more than one owner dashing into the water and sinking outright.

I was a freelance photographer 25 years ago . There was a small businessman who parked his circa 1970 vintage amphicar in front of his storefront. I passed it a couple times and finally went in to talk to him about it . He told me he would take me and his daughter out in the lake one evening . The lake water was almost up to the top where door windows are open . We had a lot of splashing water come in . i think too many people in it causes it to sink lower towards the lake water level . A driver and one light passenger would have been better but i certainly am not a light passenger lol ! it was a lot of fun !

When I got my new 1966 VW Fastback the VW boom here In Southern California was in full swing. Stories about a VW Bug, fresh off the boat from Wolfsburg being picked up by a dock crane, and dropped into a tank of water just because its shipping treatment would keep it from sinking were in popular magazines of the time. I gave my younger sister her first ride in my new car, and there being a Christmas boat parade nearby we drove to a boat ramp to park and watch it pass by. I joked to her that since VWs could float maybe we should just drive down and join in the parade. She objected or course, but almost as soon as we had settled that I was not about to try it, an Amphicar drove right past us and did just that.

Ed. My grandmother had an Amphicar when dad was a teenager. He and mom ended up with it in 73, and stored it back in NY, while he was in the marine corps, and when he retired, it bacame a father son project. Spent 5 years restorijg it, between high school and college, and have kept it going ever since. My wife's and my first date, that included her ,then 4 year old daughter, and my dog, was in the amphicar. Drove to the boat lainch, and entered Lake Erie, then went 15 miles alonf the coast, to another launch, and picked up linchs, before a cruise up the creek, to a friend's place, and docked it there. Hard oart was keeping the dog in the car, retriever mix, that loved the water, and her boat block. Had it until 2019, when she got married. It now resides in Cleveland Ohio, with her and our son in law. They took it on Lake Erie, when we lived in Erie PA, on their theid date. It's currently being restored, with her rebuilding the driveline, and him and me refreshihg the body and paint, after some dock dings. We also had it at our wedding, and our pictures were taken in it, on the lake where the wedding was held, as well as driving my step mother and step brother across the same lake, when she and dad got married. Ended up tskijg their pictures in it, from his boat that day as well, same when my stepbrother and his wife got married. Thank you for making this. It made a night of bad phantom pain a little easier to deal with.

One more of many great automotive (boat-omotive?) videos, my presently favorite Dutchman, Ed! In my 1960's boyhood neighborhood just outside of Philadelphia, an "eccentric" father nearby our house had an Amphicar. That guy also had a Nash Metropolitan to which he added a large wind-up key on the trunk's hood. He obviously had money to burn and a pretty good automotive sense of humor. When I was walking by his house one day, he was out simonizing his Nash and I asked him does his Amphicar really float. He laughed and said that he hadn't tried it on water and never would. That was one helluva endorsement, right? Thanks aplenty, Ed, for an unprecedented (for me, at least) comprehensive history of all of these attempts to ignore the difference between solid ground and all too liquid water!

I always thought these were so cool! Then as a guest photographer at King Ranch I saw they had one in a barn! I so wanted to buy it! I don’t know what happened to it but it was incredible!!

I used to see an Amphicar during summers on Cape Cod, and I now see them at car shows here in Germany; last February there was a '60 Amphicar 770 for €79,500 at the Retro Classics show in Stuttgart. Nowadays, if you have to ask how much a Schwimmwagen is, you can't afford one, but you can always take a ride in one of the many that show up at the annual Militracks military vehicle meet in Overloon.

Friend of mine`s older brother had one many years ago. Heard a few of the boys went out and swamped it...sank like a reg vehicle.

I really like this. I think it's the terror factor that your car might sink. lol The Aquada is my favorite as it skids sideways, really scary! My mother used to tell me about the 50's/60's types of these things going out onto the lake and how they really weren't good at either, but they were always a novelty.

You can actually book a short trip on an Amphicar at Disney Springs at Walt Disney World. I hear it is very expensive, but it includes a skipper and time around the lake they have there. For the really "adventurous" tourist!

In the 70's, when I was a teen, one of those Ampicars sat at a used car lot for several years in my small Indiana town. Sadly, I suspect it was scrapped when it had no buyers.

In Poland we have one famous movie about a person driving a Shwimmwagen. It's called Pan Samochodzik [Mr. Car] and Polish actor Stanisław Mikulski is searching for a treasure in Malbork castle. He has that swimming car and that's where his nick came from.

I feel like this channel probably ought to be called 'Ed's Auto History' since there aren't many car reviews. Nevertheless, a channel I greatly enjoy.

Addendum to the Amphicar story: the only Amphibious Ice Cream Van in the world is a modified one. She's called *HMS Flake 99* (no, really 😊). Then again we Brit's do have some of the only Ice Cream Vans with three axles and all wheel drive 😂 .
