Wow, fantastic lesson Mark. I thought this bass line was going to be more complicated than it actually is. And I got to use my Nordy Mute! Flatwounds and a pick is such a great tone. You really did a great job breaking this down into simple steps. And I love how you explained the theory behind it. For me, I don't just want to learn the notes, but the WHY and how they relate to the chord changes. So thanks!

Many, including myself, thought the spacy ghost noise was a theremin. Apparently it’s actually a tannerlin. It has a continuous copper bar along which a slider is pulled to generate the spooky tones.

All debates over whether Carol played on this recording aside (🙄) -this is another GREAT lesson that inspired me to pick up my bass and explore a very cool line that I had never thought much about. Thanks Mark, you never disappoint...🤘

Ms. Kaye would be horrified by the alternate picking at 6:27. She insists that down beats are always downstrokes. Watch her in the clip starting at 6:48. To be fair, I don't think Mark represents this as her picking technique, but it would help to acknowlege the difference. The lady is very particular on this point. I wish she would get her own channel, or some other online platform, and put her own stuff out there. She got burned really bad in the early days of the internet when people scanned her books and digitized her tapes, and resold them. I suspect that's why she doesn't do anything online.

I still get confused on what a 'downbeat' IS. ...although I rarely play with a pick - even though I LOVE the tone more often than not. (carpal tunnel flares when holding a pick)

@@Crushin123 Try this: tap your foot to the beat of a tune. Your foot will probably go *down* on the downbeats. One, two, three, four. Your foot goes *up* between the main beats. The upbeat.

@@Xubuntu47 OK GREAT! I will try to co-ordinate my brain to hand - I'm sure it's a bit un-natural(?), as she is always pressing that detail as well(?)... I got her DVD's and books direct from her - they were very ancient and pretty much useless - I almost wondered if my copy was done incorrectly as parts of it constantly get clipped and overwritten. The one dvd was about 4min long lol..hardly worth the cost of the dvd itself - but I didn't complain to her - I just shelved it. LOVE her style (a beach boys era fan too). thanks for the advice my friend - cheers from Toronto

The true author of the Line is a side issue - in this context - you have clearly explained the complexities of what initially seems a simple bass line. The bass line on the released recording of Good Vibrations, according to Brian himself, was not Carol Kaye. Apparently there were a number of takes using different sudio bassists over several sessions, including Brian. When the final version was laid down, it wasn't Carol Kaye providing the iconic pick infused riffs.

According to Wikipedia, any contribution that Carol Kaye made to the track, (including bass and 12 string guitar) were subsequently discarded. I guess you had to be there to know for sure. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Can’t quibble about the inventiveness of the bassline though… no matter who played it.

Mark, it is a fantastic lesson on the song, but you have to do your due diligence. Nothing in this bassline was Carol Kaye! She did not write it, and she was not one of the five (!) bass players that ended up playing parts of the record, see Wikipedia. Carol Kaye may be great player, but unfortunately she has a well known history of claiming other peoples work as her own. You may have been tricked by her.

Damn, I thought you had Carol Kaye's ACTUAL bass.
