Carol Channing - Gypsy of the Year 2010 Opening

Our Gypsy of the Year Competition in 2010opened with an unforgettable tribute to three-time Tony Award-winner Carol Channing. The stage and screen icon, backed by an all-male chorus line, delighted the sold out audience with renditions of "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" from her first Broadway smash, 1949's Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and the rousing title song from Hello, Dolly! - the show which made her a legend in 1964.
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is one of the nation’s leading industry-based, nonprofit AIDS fundraising and grant-making organizations. By drawing upon the talents, resources, and generosity of the American theatre community, since 1988 BC/EFA has raised more than $285 million for essential services for people with AIDS and other critical illnesses across the United States.
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS is the major supporter of the social service programs at The Actors Fund, including the HIV/AIDS Initiative, the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative and the Samuel J. Friedman Health Center for the Performing Arts. Broadway Cares also awards annual grants to more than 450 AIDS and family service organizations in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, DC.

The affection and protective care with which the one chorus boy guides Miss Channing is such a beautiful picture of respect. He guides her, yet does not condescend. He subtly supports her but lets her strength shine through. During this virus, I don't fully know why, I have been watching this so often. And I really start crying at the lyric "Look at the old girl now fellas!!"

I was leaving work at 8 o'clock on a Sunday in Manhattan and saw her walking towards, almost a block away, in a bright red trench coat. She was very elegant, had true presence. I had a pleasant little conversation with her when she passed. She seemed humble and loved her fans. She had class but could really camp it up on stage. She had a reputation for being a hard worker, but always looked like she was having fun. She was born to be on Broadway. I was surprised at how tall she was, about 6 feet in flat shoes. I always appreciated her uniqueness.

R.I.P... one of the great thrills in her live was being on Nixon's enemies list... she was a real liberal, someone who really cared about others... she was for real... she will be missed.

....just read that ever since her inclusion on Nixon's enemies list was revealed, that ALL of Carol's PLAYBILLs lister her theater accomplishments...and that she then listed her inclusion on Nixon's list as a separate accomplishment. Has it ever been revealed WHY she was on Nixon's list?!?
