In our opening videos we generally try to show the plans and ideas for both sides. We believe that you can also get useful information from other openings like the French Defense, that could be beneficial for your play with the black pieces. However, we will also consider your wish to focus a bit more on the black perspective for future recordings.

This has to be one of the best explained (if not THE best) and thorough chess theory videos I've watched! I like your use of an actual chess board to demonstrate, as well. Easier to follow and grasp, in my opinion. Pls add that to all videos (if not already done)!

Tal variation is interesting and power to employ in !

Very Very good video. I've been playing the caro-kahn at the 1000 rating level without having done much research into the theory of the advanced. I've been playing c5 against it because its what Gotham Chess recommended, but I don't think I really understood it properly so I figured I'd look into the main line and see if I could find some basic ideas. Not only did I find a video with those basic ideas that I could learn in 10 minutes, but also 25 more additional minutes of ideas to prepare even better. After watching this video I've gotten significantly better at surviving in the opening with black, which for someone of my rating is something that is getting pretty important now that my tactics have improved and I've become somewhat competent. My only complaint from this video is that when explaining a given line you went off and small tangents explaining other lines for a second briefly which was a tad confusing. If you could really focus on one line at a time a bit more this would go from very very good video to perfect video.

I think it's impossible to watch this video and not start playing the caro kann instantly 🤠

Massively good this complete explanation about Caro-Kann> Advance Variation. I'm playing Black Pieces: 1.e4c6 2.d4d5 3.e5Bf5 4.Nf3e6 5.Bd3Bg4, The difference here is that looks like the clubbing game you mentioned, but I pin the Knight with bishop and contnue with your ideas of pawn to c5 and gain control over the centre of the board with bishop Bc5 and then Knight and Queen as you prepared the information. @@Chessfactor The most frequent I use is the Sicialian Defence and its variations, Old Benoni and recently I started to experiment with French Defence, Advance Exchange Variation. But like Russians I returned back to the one I feel more comfortable playing black pieces The Caro-Kann

A great video on the advanced Caro-Kann with valuable comments on the moves in a very sympathetic manner 😀 I liked very much.

This is just what I was looking for. The depth was amazing, yet easily understandable. Now for part 2. This video showed replies to whites best moves. Part 2 can give ideas on taking advantage of whites less than best moves. Just an idea of the direction to go. The 2D board can help, but the 3D view is really clear. The pauses after a move are important because often, following along, a viewer is seeing the move on screen, then looking at her board to make the move there, then looking back at the screen. So a slight pause is good.

Great analysis. I transcribed it with some difficulty, but with a few rewinds it was not that hard. I would suggest listing the suggested moves and maybe some of the side lines in the description.

I'm so scattered shot when it comes to chess openings, that I'm choosing this one and sticking to it to memorize and other Caro-Kann defense variations. In games, I know a little bit of the semi-slav and at least two variations. Now I will learn the Caro-Kann and surprise my opponents, since I'm a beginner and don't expect much folks to know it at that level.

You respond to e6 with Qd6 and take the pawn with your king if he takes. The game goes on and is equal with engine lines but very messy and hard to figure out in the center.

Beautiful demonstration of an opening I have so far understood very little of. One thing though: Why is the seemingly natural move c3 to bolster White's centre not even mentioned? Also: is f4 instead of Nf3 possible? I've played that move a couple of times with reasonable success, but maybe just because my opponents didn't always know how to respond in the most forceful and efficient way. And yes, we players at club level tend to be very happy to exchange that annoying Bishop off asap! This said: I don't think I have ever responded to 1.e4 with c6, for my part relying on the French, with its often awkwardly placed light square Bishop. Thanks again for bringing such clarity to the subject!

I'm 1900 and I lose if I play against the Tal variation this video has been very useful in my studying against the Tal variation

'therefur' combined with 'now the bishop is coat' makes me think Alex' ancestors could be pro trappers :p

I would agree, it us rare to see the breyer variation. Ad a caro kann player I seldom see it. However when facing bots, there is one chess bot that plays it allot.

I've asked other Creators to please help me in utilizing the PGN Files but that never happens. Is there a software for this you recommend or please, could you take just a moment to show me the ABC's of getting use from them. Once taken by the hand the 1st time, I'll be set! Hi Mike, we are happy to assist you. Basically, what we can recommend is the study feature that lichess provides (lichess.org/study). There you can create your own repertoire like the Caro-Kann Defense. You could for example upload the pgns from our website and analyse the variations with a chess engine. You can also add your own comments to the moves or add new lines to the existing ones. Hope that helps.

You cannot choose to play the caro kann as white, it's a black opening against e4

You can try the London, Italian or the king's Indian for white

Why is it dangerous to play Ng8 at 11:34? You even take with check and black looses the right to castle?

Hi Alex, it seems this variation of the opening will lead black into the ground especially if your not a strong player🤣...am I wrong in thinking this?

29:43 Be3. Stops c5. Indeed it looks like Be3 is a good idea in several places but it is not discussed in the video? Great video otherwise though!
