Ashley plays it well, but if you really want to hear it played properly with great emphasis on musicality look up Herbert Clarke. Herbert's last movement flows and rolls in a way no other online performance has ever done so. None of this quack quack quack stuff in the last variation, but an effect which is just beautiful to listen too.

dangeorges I'd have to disagree. I can understand why you would say that though. This version is slower and more intimate because it has only a piano accompaniment. It also is recorded in 2015 with better sound quality as well as a smallwr venue. She did amazing. But Wynton Marsalis version still hasn't been beaten. If the Wynton Marsalis of then played now in this venue he sound even more amazing then the orchestra recording.

dangeorges if that's the way you want to put it then yes. You might like something better that's doesn't mean it was done or played better. This woman did awesome but the fact is she did not do a better job than Wynton. You can get pissy and defensive all you want. I was respectfully disagreeing and have my reason as to why. Just because it's your opinion doesn't mean it's right and doesn't mean I have to agree with it.

  • @MartiniMan

You've convinced me. I do not believe this version is the best rendition I've heard. Your disagreement with me has turned me back to the Marsalis version. This version sucks. May God be praised that you set me straight.

Stephen Alston: I see what you're saying, but I must disagree with you on this one. dangeorges DID say that his (her?) comment didn't take away from the Wynton Marsalis version, which is, of course, perfectly executed. dangeorges is entitled to an opinion, and so are you. It DOES seem that you didn't really want to accept that opinion, and simply said "you're wrong."

The cornet has such a sultry rich sound. And this lovely woman plays it and trumpet so masterfully! It brings back the days I regularly played my trumpet with a God friend and brother the Lord named Dean. We'd play for hours together for fun and practice every Thursday. Great memories. I love the sound of the corner Dean said often that he'd loved to play his corner in heaven for the Lord. Now that he is there in the presence of God, I"m sure that is something he is surely doing, and I'll join him someday in the heavenly orchestra and play for our Saviour Jesus!

Most of them don't. They are impressed by it but they don't know why it's impressing. If you haven't played a brass instrument you can't know what's involved into fast changing, high interval notes. Just as well they don't know the kind of pain involved into playing a long stretch of notes without removing the instrument from your lips like she does at the end, and probably why she chose to end it on a low f instead of a high one.

Yeah. Not to take anything from this because c'mon she sounds absolutely gorgeous!! I've only been playing for 6 years (I'm still in high school), so I'm clearly no expert... But like Nakariakov is insane. My favorite is his 1998 recording- just piano and trumpet. It's so clean and you can hear the crazy amount of control he has. Also his fancy finger flourish is insanely impressive. Also I'm really biased because I'm terribly in love Sergei Nakariakov...

That was a truly awesome performance which survived the accompanist's best effort to ruin it. Had this been recorded better and with a better accompaniment, it might have been the best performance of this piece that I've heard. It was clean with more of the character the piece calls for- very light, expressive, and trumpety with sacrificing technique. It's a little shocking that a performance that good is seen in this setting.

When I was a strapping, young trumpet player who enjoyed playing the Carnival of Venice (and Malaguena), I thought I was pretty good. But, I never did the accented melody amidst runaway fingering and dropped that full octave down. What incredible embouchure and control she has! I grew up listening to Al Hirt at Carnegie Hall doing this piece. So, whenever I listen to someone else do this (or even Jumbo's recordings on YT), my benchmark is that Carnegie Hall performance. Comments about the accompanist and venue (echo chamber) go for me, too. Marvelous job! Bravo!

This recording is live in an intimate setting of a church. This is not a big money production. Just Ashley playing and sharing her music for 1 or 1000's. Ashley doesn't play the instrument. Ashley sings from inside and the instrument is an extension of her body and musical soul. Her equipment matches so well it allows musical expression and execution to be free. What a talented musician, playing live and smiling because she is so excited to share her music. I think Ashley uses a Smith & Watkins Cornet and a GR mouthpiece. The United States Navy Band soloist also used a GR cornet mouthpiece.

@@del_boy_trotter respectfully, I just want to clarify what we're agreeing on. If I read that you think that the piece was overr her head, or beyond her capabilities, then we don't agree. Beyond a bungled accompaniment, I thought the piece was very well played, ergo within her capabilities. I'm also not sitting here saying she should improve, although all great players do continue to improve. I've been playing trombone and baritone as an amateur since 1960 and I don't think I'm qualified to empty her spit valve much less give her pointers. An amazing player - check out some of her other recordings, e.g. Claude Bolling's Toot Suite (made famous by Maurice Andre). We may agree on some things, but I don't think we share an opinion regarding her performance, or whether she needs to "improve". I'm blown away by her sound, technique, and her ability to stay composed when things around her seem to be coming unglued. Do I think this was the best ever recordiing of Carnival of Venice? No, but neither should it be removed from consideration as a great performance. Just want to make sure I'm clear about what we agree on.

The way she stung the accented melody notes on the variations reminds me of how Nakariakov recorded it. Too bad the acoustics of the venue provided enough echo to almost bury the non-accented notes on the triplet and 32nd note variations. During many years I was trumpeter of the symphonic orchestra of Santos, Brazil. This piece is very complicated because it uses almost all the features of the trumpet as double blow and triple tongue and other things more. Congratulations girl. Go ahead. Sorry for my bad English.
