Nate M i believe this performance showcases the very struggle between professional musicians and perfection in music. he slaves for hours on fundamentals, he slaves on technique, he slaves on absolute perfection until the perfect sound is omitted. absolute perfection, all though impossible to reach fully, is the only thing that drives this struggle. its the only thing that keeps music itself real. and i believe this piece in particular really shows the ups and downs of every musicians professional career.

Perhaps one of the best musical interpretations of this well known piece. Sergei masters every aspect but unlike many other virtuosos who have also attempted this, Sergei exudes an unmatched melodical expression...almost of dance between the horn and the music. Such a pleasant performance instead of the usual brutal double tonguing attack most performers engage with. This would make Rafael Mendez proud!

I started to play out of the Arban in 7th grade. Finished by 9th. Full ride trumpet major in college. What does it take? Play this 1,000 times! Now you might have the technique down. Then another 1,000 times to develop your own sound! In HS we played this with 1 finger to make it more interesting! But to stand up and perform it perfectly like this requires huge effort and monster talent! No substitution for hard sustained work!

Brad Stewart I agree with your statement. It’s hard to get any better than this. It basically absolute perfection except maybe certain interpretation differences. My issue with this one is the final variation is the blattiness of the accented notes. I’m sure he could play this section any way he likes but his over accentuation is not the delicate style I’m used to hearing on cornet solos. Maybe because I always have used Gerard Schwarz as the measuring stick for cornet solos. Have you heard Rafael Mendez rendition. It’s one of the few pieces that he plays without his classic Spanish tone and flair. And it’s no surprise his rendition is flawless as well.
