Jonas Kaufmann as Don José sings the Flower Song 'La fleur que tu m'avais jetée' with Anna Caterina Antonacci as Carmen in Act II of Francesca Zambello's production of Georges Bizet's opera Carmen, The Royal Opera, 2006.
Carmen was based on a popular novella of the same name by Prosper Mérimée, which enticed French readers with exotic tales of Spain. Its heady combination of passion, sensuality and violence initially proved too much for the stage and Georges Bizet’s opera was a critical failure on its premiere in 1875. Bizet died shortly after, never learning of the spectacular success Carmen would achieve - it has been staged over 500 times at Covent Garden alone.
Carmen contains many well-loved numbers, such as Carmen’s seductive Habanera and Escamillo’s rousing Toreador’s song, in which he celebrates the thrill of the bullfight. Richly coloured designs capture the sultry heat of the Spanish sun, while ranks of soldiers, crowds of peasants, gypsies and bullfighters bring 19th-century Seville alive. This combination of memorable music, vivid setting and dramatic story have made Carmen one of the most popular operas in the world.

I love how he sings the final phrase "Carmen, je t'aime" to the flower, not to her. To me it shows that he is in love with his conception of her, not as she really is--which is tragically evident in Acts III and IV.

There are many well sung versions of this aria, Corelli, Pavarotti, Carreras, Domingo to mention a few. Now to this rendition by Jonas Kaufmann, love his rich, warm tone, but his acting ability superior to other tenors. He sounds like a broken, defeated man, destroyed by the great love he feels for Carmen, no other singer conveys this as well as Jonas, he is in a class on his own.

Sometimes I try to find other tenor’s versions of this aria but they always feel so soulless compared to the wave of emotions of Jonas performance. This is a masterpiece

@@gerlindemayer9645 Yeah, vocal expression should be all you need.. evenness of the sound even while the dynamics of it are expressing emotion (with freedom!). I used to like Kaufmann a lot when i first encountered him (in a live performance of Wagner) because of the quality of his voice making him sound richer than your typical screechy high-register tenor, which i just don't prefer, but the end quality of the sound production depends a lot on what it is he is singing. I feel like that is the case with a lot of the newer singers (though not all). The music most needing subtlety and control is where things unravel. Like if you go back to Nicolai Gedda (for example), it essentially does not matter what he sings, it always sounds technically superb and 'right', in all registers, at all volumes, in all venues. And i wouldn't say he had a huge voice, but it is the total command and control of it in all possible genres and circumstances that touches and excites. You need only hear him, not see him, though he had a perfectly pleasant presence in his younger days as well. But to each his own.
This is acting one so seldom sees in opera and a beautiful voice.
Kaufmann is probably the best former of portraits among all those tenors of the last 100 years. I has some flaws he probably never gets rid of, but what can I complain about when I have the feeling that EVERYTHING he sings he understands intellectually and emotionally. That is worth more than the highest note or an impeccable painissimo ;-)
What man hasn't felt like this sometime in his life.

Blublu Entre Amigas:You can have almost the same experience for far less expense.The New York Met do live cinecasts of most of their productions. Here in Scotland, pre-Covid I've watched them in Cineworld, massive HD sound and vision, it's superb, and only about £18. The Met, as well as using traditional sets, have a super high-tech mechanical three dimensional set that can any type of background projected on to it. I first sa w it in Die Valkyren: when Bryn Terfel (as Siefried) first appears on stage, it looks as if he has just emerged from an actual wood. Well worth seeing them if you have a cinema near you that receives them, and the time zone differences aren't a problem (They are broadcast live in NY as a matinee performance, perfect for the UK, as we get it live in the early evening.
Greatest tenor in the world today, beautiful rich varied voice and a wonderful actor, he can really sing anything!

It's the chiaroscuro technique. (Google it up) In classical singing, it's a blend of the "dark" and the "bright" sound which comes naturally from the neutral and relaxed position of the larynx (as in sighing) with a steady blow of air. With the assumption that Jonas' voice teacher applied the same pedagogy as my voice teacher does, sounding like a "cow" or a baritone - as you may say - albeit singing high notes AS A TENOR could only mean that the singer has already acquired the "grounded tone" brought about by the lowering of the larynx which maintains a "free singing" with less or no tension from the throat. Branding a classical singer based on how they sound or at least based on what we know or think they sound like (a tenor sounding like a baritone or a soprano who sounds like a mezzo-soprano) is as good as shutting your ears and heart in appreciating the natural sound of the singer. Look up Jessye Norman. She's a soprano, but darn, her dark tone is so captivating and haunting at the same time. Would you say that she is just trying to fake her tone? Hmmmm.
@AemiliaJacobus

Wow so after 5 years of posting this comment, I've only just seen a reply notification. I'm not really a fan of his voice anymore and I think he fakes the darkness in his voice a lot, but at least he can sing in tune I guess.

@@archibalddalupang5634 This kind of singing is not a chiaroscuro example. It's a perfect example of depressed lyrinx in order to achive a darker/fake voice. This is not proper singing. This kind of singing is small and dangerous for the singer.
He certainly sings his heart out...voice has a pleasant tonality

Emotionally scorching. Phenomenal! I used to direct youth theatre and never had the time to go to the opera, but quite honestly, what I did see of it on film seemed poorly acted which put me off quite a bit (though I still loved the Three Tenors!) I've finally turned to opera properly. Imagine coming across this extraordinary all-round flame-thrower of a performer in Kaufmann! Astounding! And this Antonacci/Kaufmann Carmen is incandescent...just wish I had seen it live all those years ago.
Many peoples don't know this aria but it seems to me that this is better than Toreador song or Habanera.

So true, He receieves so much criticism. His voice is gorgeous, not classical really but musical and beautiful. People compare the modern tenors to Lanza and Caruso etc. which is OF COURSE not a fair comparison at all. Jonas has such a dark throaty quality to his voice, and his strength is really something. I love his singing, such a talented spinto tenor.
@Jacob-ry3lu
8 жыл бұрын
+Redeem the Nation He receives this criticism because of how his voice used to sound like. Watch videos of him when he was much younger. He has a much more natural and beautiful sound, his voice is not as large as he makes it out to be. Throatiness and artificial darkness will never create a bigger voice. That is a fact. He has a very beautiful voice, but he changed his technique to benefit himself and market himself as a dramatic tenor when he really has a beautiful lyric voice. Not a talentless singer, just bad technique
@7pastorb
8 жыл бұрын
+jacob lahr To me that is not a bad thing. I remember seeing an interview where he says he was ready to give up singing altogether and then he met a particular voice coach who encouraged him to find "his" voice. Which he says he did. Perhaps the earlier voice an attempt to sound like someone else, and this is his actual voice. He may have changed his technique to sing dramatic roles, but his voice, power and volume dont say fake at all. just an opinion.
@Jacob-ry3lu
8 жыл бұрын
+Redeem the Nation That's a respectable position, but I still disagree. Ring is what makes the voice travel in a theater, making the voice darker via throatiness not only muffles the sound but also distorts the vowels. I've personally never heard him live but I have read account saying that he wasn't nearly as powerful as they thought he would be. My teacher and I were recently discussing Kaufman and Alagna and how much their voices have changed all in benefit of opera houses marketing to a wider repetoire and getting more bang for their buck
@7pastorb
8 жыл бұрын
+jacob lahr I understand what youre saying. And yes Kaufmanns voice has dramatically changed since his early days. He is pinched off at times and his voice can sound set back in his throat. Alagna's voice has changed for the worse in my opinion as well. I saw a recent performance and i didnt care for his voice at all. I cannot remember what opera he was performing, but i know his voice sounded small. But i have also heard some of his performances that i thought were brilliant. Inconsistant i guess. Javier Camarena is a voice i really enjoy. Yonghoon is also decent but he has some technique issues that stuff his voice way in his throat and makes him sound muffled. There are some local singers where i live that i would consider up and coming and if they get a chance they will be amazing. I just love the music and i love passion, perhaps that is what im feeling from these performers that i am attracted to.
He is pure emotion and beautiful singing. This aria by Jonas is my favest version
I'm crying..

Quelle voix merveilleuse mais aussi quel merveilleux acteur !!!!! Merci

Only one Word - Fantastic
I love this version best. So much emotion, even with the sob at the ending. Many other versions I find have less soul in it. Bravo!❤

It is unlikely that there can be a better version of the Flower Song - apart from one performed by Jonas Kaufmann himself - either before or after this recording. He is a genius at portraying a character and his Don Jose is stunning both vocally and dramatically. This is so exquisite.
