His phrasing sets him apart. There is no beginning or end when he starts. Just lovely transitions.

But he can sing, he can sing....sound, diction, I cam understand everything easily, what a relief! what an art he masters!

I found out this is from the Berlin Philharmonic Christmas Gala of 1997, Claudio Abbado conducting.

Absolutely fabulous. Surely the best thing he's ever recorded. I think it helps to speak the language. I can't say enough about this performance.

Alagna sang like this all the time in the 90's. He was really great in the lyrical roles and French rep in particular. Though his attempts at heavier roles gradually got the better of his voice, it seems. He remains an accomplished singer worthy of respect in any case.

I had the pleasure of seeing Alagna as Don José at the Met in 2019. He is still a remarkably talented singer and actor.

I generally like RA singing. Technically speaking it's interesting to me his posture and head position on his higher and high notes. The late Robert burgess, a singing teacher from Chicago, used to talk about this position and if you watch RA he slightly rocks back his head. Gigli, I believe, did the same thing. I don't trust the sort of singing where you see the singer pushing their head forward or forward and down, if we are talking about good production.......

Stable. Roberto garde toujours le R en français. Sa gorge se resserre inévitablement quand il prononce R. Donc sa method de chanter l'aria est trop exigeant pour le souffle. C'est super.

Come sono più belle le due note finali semplici, come sono state scritte, che non quei singhiozzoni da filodrammatici alla Del Monaco. Comunque, grande Alagna, voce bellissima come poche nella sua generazione.

@@bodiloto que vous préfériez ces 2 chanteurs, pas de problème. Mais Roberto Alagna est tout aussi français. Donc, je ne comprends pas votre problème. Et si vous voulez parler du r "roulé", il y a bien longtemps qu'il a disparu, à part chez les anciens dans certaines régions. D'ailleurs, on voit déjà bien l'évolution entre Escalaïs et Georges Thill. Il faut dire aussi qu' Escalaïs était occitan et devait rouler les r même en parlant. Le r roulé est certainement plus adapté à la technique vocale mais bon, ce n'est pas "ma tasse de thé". Et le fait de ne pas rouler les r ne l'empêche pas d'avoir une bonne diction.

@@ingridsteinlechner8206 non madame, de nombreux chanteurs français et chanteuses françaises ont constamment roulé les "r" et continuent de le faire. Le fait d'être français n' y est pour rien. Alagna a beaucoup travaillé sa diction du chant français pour en arriver là.

Alla Bastille i suoi migliori amici e complici erano e sono ancora i tecnici del suono ... i francesi vivete da anni con le vostre illusioni e speranze ... mi dispiace ma dal vivo Alagna aveva meno voce di Pavarotti, anche questo è un fatto . senza microfono la vocina di Alagna nella sala si sentiva poco . il vecchio p.s. spero che Lei conosce benissimo la storiella dei bei vestiti del Re ...

Però, si vuole la dizione perfetta in francese, ed è giusto. Ma quando gli italiani chiedono di capire le opere italiane cantate da artisti di altra lingua madre, si obietta che non si può pretendere! Eppure i più grandi hanno una pronuncia perfetta, a cominciare dalla Callas. E poi, come diceva Teresa Berganza, l'italiano è molto facile da pronunciare!

Gentile Sylvie, ho studiato a scuola per sette anni la bella lingua francese. Mi è sempre piaciuta molto, avevo ottimi voti. Poi sono stato molte volte nella douce France, e mi sono trovato molto bene sia per la lingua che per la cucina, la cortesia (esclusi alcuni ambienti di Parigi, la cura dei giardini e di tutto. Non so come mai il mio commento è apparso sotto questo video di Alagna, che è francese ma parla benissimo l'italiano, per le sue origini. Anche a me dà fastidio sentire pronunciare male il francese, sia nelle opere, sia in generale in Italia. Perfino in TV molti dicono "äir" invece di "er" parlando di AIR FRANCE. Così una volta, atterrando all'aeroporto Charles De Gaulle, la hostess annunciò l'arrivo a "ciarl de gol", all'inglese. In Italia siamo sommersi da termini inglesi, per giunta pronunciati male! Eppure le regole di pronuncia in francese sono chiare e stabili. Tornando all'opera lirica, io credo che venga maltrattato sia l'italiano che il francese dai cantanti di lingua madre inglese, in genere. Grandissimi e grandissime di cui non faccio nomi non si comprendono, se non si ha il libretto!
