Carmelo Anthony - Postup Powerhouse

Спорт

Carmelo Anthony is a 9 time NBA All-Star, 2 time Olympic Gold Medalist (soon to be 3 time, unless a massive upset occurs in Rio), and an NBA scoring champion. He finished the season 13th in scoring (21.8 points per game), but his Knicks had the 3rd worst record in the East (ahead of Philly and Brooklyn). At 32 years of age, his best chance for gold comes at the end of the NBA season. If Carmelo wins Olympic Gold, he will be the first male basketball player (across all nations) to win 3 gold medals.
What we’re here to talk about is Melo’s ability to post up. It wasn’t until about a season and a half into being a New York Knick that Melo decided to allow himself to play the Power Forward. Once that happened, he thrived by absolutely obliterating smaller players with his size and strength, and embarrassing bigger guys with his quickness and bag of tricks. Ever since then, Carmelo’s post game has continued to be one of the only functional aspects of the Knicks offense. Pay close attention to his footwork and how low he gets. He fluctuates between wisely taking what the defense gives him and just putting his head down and going through everyone to get to the rim. He’s poised in the paint, with his pump fakes, pivots, stepthroughs, and power through contact. He’s really a joy to watch when he gets rolling.
I recognize that Melo catches on the wing a lot and isolates from there. It isn’t ideal post play, but at the same time, he’s a bull and he just bullies players so he can back in. Yes, it's a lot of faceups, but you can still learn from it. For future reference, bigs (and any player that wants to play in the post), you catch the ball just above the box (like Melo does on a lot of these), and go from there. The reason for that is one dribble, and you’re right at the rim. If you catch on the wing, you’re allowing the defenses to zone the strong side (think Thibs’ Bulls) or shade defenders your way (think the 2015 Warriors in the Finals against LeBron). If you’re still reading this, you probably already know this, but when you’re posting up, you do the work BEFORE the ball is entered to you. Rim run. If you're bodied up at the free throw line or higher, rip through and get behind your guy. When he tries to seal a side, swim move over. Work to get post position, then LOCK your defender in.

Carmelo Anthony can virtually score on anyone at anytime. Melo was 6'8", 235 pounds. He just cannot be stopped in the post. He has a very quick first step off the dribble. He has a spin away dribble, explosive left hand dribble, post up fade away jump shot, turn around jump shot, spin around up and under move, and a lethal drop step or jab step dribble. He has the size, strength, excellent footwork to get inside the lane and score. He is probably the most fundamentally skilled basketball player in the NBA. Kobe Bryant once said that Anthony is more difficult to guard compared to LeBron James.

Nah he’s rated just fine. This isn’t Rucker Park. It’s NBA. A league where team ball and defense wins and Melo wasn’t interested in either. Everything he did was for his own stat line. Not only that, but he had no sense for the business of the game. Instead of going to NY as a free agent he forced a mid season trade that gutted the Knicks, which was great for him because he got to shine and start summer early after the first round sweep.

He didn’t have the team or pieces to win. He iso scored a lot playing the two and three because that was his job. That’s why he was hired and that’s what coach wanted. I say it was more bad coaching and not having talent that messed well.

Thing with Melo is that he always played with other superstars who were just as much a defensive liability as he was. i.e. Iverson in Denver, and Amare @ Knicks. So even when his teams were good, they never could make it past the 2nd round. Also playing in an era where SF evolved to PF or even C, and where players in his position had to guard multiple position didn't help him at all. Melo is still a HOF, but his legacy could have been painted in a different color had he just been playing for the right organisation, surrounded by right players.

Honestly, I think Melo is one of the most entertaining playera to watch. His personal offensive game is just as unguardable as anyone else (including the GOAT). If he started his career in today's NBA and he can increase his stability as a spot-up shooter, this man can seriously dominate... Don't forget, before the Greek Freak, Melo is the best SF rebounder, he can easily grab 10+ boards every game and even 20 (with like 10 offensive rebounds from his own misses).

This is the way Melo should be utilised. Posting up on the high/low block, isolation opportunities, driving in and drawing the contact. The scoring champion didn't get this opportunity in OKC and he didn't play to his strengths. I hope this changes so people still realise how great this guy really is.
