I was 15 in 1966 and was looking for a job. One of my friends at school told me to go to the Carmelite Home her sister worked there. I thanked her and the next day I went to fill out an application. I won't go into the whole story but Sister Ursula hired me and I worked on the 2nd floor as a nurses aide. .90 cents an hour!!!! I stayed with them until I was turning 18 There were 11 nuns and a Mother Superior. I was not Catholic but getting to work beside them, the memories I have and hearing their stories is one I hope I never forget. I learned Compassion, Love, Loyalty, And Devotion they were truly amazing.

amazing story! cannot imagine the world of 1966 when a kid walks into a Carmelite monastery for a high school job - these days such a story would likely end with getting hired by a taco bell. sounds like the sisters left a deep spiritual impression on you , the 2 nuns i grew up around in school as a kid left an indelible impression on me as well. god bless these sisters

You don't understand Catholicism ... it is faith in Jesus Christ. St Paul was inspired by God .. Taking a few quotes out of context shows a lack of knowledge of the Whole picture.

I am well versed in the bible and the understanding and meaning of scripture. I have given talks and explanations to hundreds (thousands over time) of people on a number of Bible themes. You initially said """ I can not trust what it says in the bible because the words don't mean what they actually say."" I never did !! What Paul is saying in Philippians 1:18 is that Christ is proclaimed as God our saviour and that is good no matter what the motives (so others Paul says could be saying this through a sense of personal pride or selfish ambition (1:17) or to better someone in an argument) ..It remains the Way the Truth and the Life..

AJA Deacon I disagree. If it was a faith in Christ, they would not need all the rituals and dogma. They would be able to embrace the love and teachings of Jesus without all the pomp and circumstance. The fact that they pray to saints and have to serve penance for their sins appears to be a direct contradiction to the "faith" of Jesus. Not to mention that the Bible was the result of a council of men who could not even agree on what should be included or what it meant. Going back to the traditional mass which was said in Latin is a direct contradiction to the teaching themselves. Jesus wanted to INCLUDE everyone. He didn't impose rules based on a ceremony spoken inn a language his followers didn't understand. He spoke directly to people and taughtr them to not just listen, but to understand. If you believe the gospels are an accurate accounting of Jesus, then"Traditional" Scholasticism goes directly against what Jesus himself taught.

They dedicated their life forever to God, They pray, they sing, working hard, they find inner peace. They have a genuine calling to be a Carmelite.Nun, they're are blessed And they helped their neighbors in need,if the mom is sick or the dad is out for work. I liked that s nun visit a house and pray and helping the member of the family. It's good they allowed this interview

I think you misunderstood - the nun helping the family was not a Carmelite - she was a Little Sister of the Assumption, and they showed her as an example of the active orders, who go out and work in the community -- in contrast to the Carmelites, who are a contemplative order.

What a beautiful life to live. Look at the joy the young novice exudes when the host tells her she will live the next 50-60 years "in these walls" at 20:22 "lovely".. how beautiful. The joy of the Holy Spirit shines through everything they do. Their life You'd be hard-pressed to find such radiant joy-filled holiness outside of a cloister. Listening to the sisters laugh is so delightful.

It's interesting that very recent documentaries on this order reflect the very same spirit among all the nuns--it speaks so well to the timeless qualities of this order!

I'm a tertiary Carmelite member of the Blackrock chapter. The group moved over to whitefriar street eight years ago. Due to lack of numbers. I'm turning fifty eight years Saturday coming next birthday. Mother with a son age thirty two years.

1959......just before the deluge. How little they knew of the catastrophe which was just around the corner.

Beautiful. I always try and remember as I get into bed and night and say my prayers (I never finish) that the nuns and monks of the enclosed orders are praying for us whilst we are asleep and all through the day. This was a joy to see. Thank you.

They can if they choose. Most Carmelite Nuns do wear a fairly traditional habit to be fair.

Since I'm not a Carmelite nun and don't live the interior life as they do, I don't think I'm in a position to pass judgement on how they live out their vocation. I find it fascinating that people who haven't chosen the life feel such a need to dictate to nuns that they adhere to a stereotypical image. It strikes me as a way to "put women in their place" or keep faith at arms length by promoting an other-worldly view of religion that makes it irrelevant to the lives most of us live in the modern world. It's a way of dismissing their prophetic witness under the guise of saving the church.

🙂 notice how the nun not answering the questions averts her eyes from the male interviewer... and focuses more on the sister speaking to avoid eye contact with him... not enough to be rude, but you can tell she's mindful of her gaze... in a world of shameless females, modesty and chastity are so beautiful... nuns truly are amazing women ...

How sad us westerners don’t have that anymore. Children are put into day care too early and when a parent is unwell - most of the time children raise themselves with today’s technology. Too many have broken away from church, a sense of belonging and tribal roots. Many grandparents in the west are very selfish and there not interested in the grandkids let alone raising them. In other culture Alla round the world grandparents are a big part of the family unit. The west are encouraged to spend the inheritance and live, live - who cares if it brings poverty to the generations below (buy that caravan now). My Polish (catholic) grandfather still has kept the family home at 94 for the generations too come

To Peggy, we have different kinds of congregations of nuns, not all are wearing habit depends on thier congregations. The important is their dedication to God and helping the needy through their prayers and helping in tge communities and attending the sick members of the family, abandoned kids, elderly and many more.. It is a shame that all nuns don't wear a full habit. If you're giving up the world to be the bride of Christ, you shouldn't wear any worldly clothing, and you should definitely wear the veil as a sign of your dedication to Our Lady as well. These days, you see some nuns that don't wear any kind of habit, not even a veil! That is so sad.

Alan: Ms. Lindenthaler likes women covered and silent. Lives way, way in the past. Catholic Religious have evolved, no longer veil themselves, even the Carmelites have moved into a more realistic approach to living. Carmelites remain a great prophetic sign in the world. This is a very old film, 1959. Times have changed. Thanks for your interest.

+pippick1946 catholic religious have "evolved" so much that there are hardly any now. It's better to keep with old practices. I'm not sure if you've noticed but almost ALL orders that are doing well with vocations are traditional.

Vatican II did NOT say to get rid of their Habits, but that they could modernize and modify. As Cardinal Arinze has said, many of the extreme modernizations, such as abolishing the Collar or Habit, were the result of taking things out of context so that they could follow their personal agendas, not the Church's. It became like a snowball going downhill. You will note that nowadays the pendulum is swinging back. More and more young men and women entering religious life want to wear distinctive religious dress. Many thanks and blessings.

Yes. In those days, nuns would cover their face whenever they have to meet other peoples outside their monastery. Apart from avoiding them from seeing vanity of secular things and men, it is one of the way for them to retain their prayerful environment, by covering their views from anything that can distract them.

Being a Christian means to live a life of sacrifice. And choosing to become a nun means to live one of the highest form of sacrifice. Living her whole life without her own family but dedicating every single days for prayers, works and joy for God and God alone.
