The Julius Baer Generation Cup is the 7th of 9 events on the $1.6 million 2022 Meltwater Champions Chess Tour and takes place on chess24 from September 18-25. The 16-player field will be cut in half by the 4-day round-robin Prelims. The total prize fund is $150,000, with $750 for a win and $250 for a draw in the Prelims. The quarterfinals and semi-finals are 1-day, 4-game matches, while the final will feature two such matches over two days.
The players have 15 minutes for all their moves, plus a 10-second increment starting from move 1. In the Prelims there are 3 points for a win and 1 for a draw. If a tiebreak is required the players will play two 5+3 games and then, if needed, a single Armageddon game, where White has 5 minutes to Black's 4, but a draw counts as a win for Black. No draw offers are allowed before move 40. Official website: chess24.com/tour

Ever since discovering his games years ago, Ivanchuk has become my favorite player to watch. In this age of engines and memorization, he seems to be one of the only great players to often play in a way that is interesting to himself as opposed to just striving for engine accuracy. He is also fascinating in that he is capable of beating the best players or losing to mediocre players depending on his mood. Not many players are such a wild card and genuine threat across the spectrum like he is. I hope the other masters enjoy getting to play such an interesting player.

I was thrilled to see this game turn out like this. Tricky endgame is the best possible scenario to watch Magnus and Ivanchuk trade blows. Wonderful display from Ivanchuk to find that complicated defensive resource to hold the draw.
Chucky masterful with the mind games. That knight move to 'defend' the fork was genius...seems to have instantly made Magnus dismiss the possibility of another fork.

Clearly Chucky has a sense of humor. It also strikes me that was a gesture of solidarity.
The quote by Magnus"I dont believe in fortresses" is certainly very logical to be brought up here since Chucky created the most impenetrable knight/rook fortress to guard his king and withstand a brutal queen attacks literally from every angle down to a 123 move!! Just an epic game from both sides

Magnus might be the strongest player currently alive due to strong prep and memorization, also thanks to the power of computer analysis, but he doesn't hold a candle to Fischer's brilliance and creativity. Chessmetrics (which is less inflationary than Elo) also puts Fischer's peak at 2895, quite a bit ahead of Magnus's peak FIDE of 2882.
Indeed it was the 50-move rule.

What if Vanchuk had a Bishop instead of a Knight ? He Cannot make a proper fortress like this game. So that's the Power of Knight
After years of watching agad I have never seen him curse. At 17:49 it might be the first time ever I have heard agad curse in over a thousand videos
According to the engine data arriving from a small buzzer that I store with my sporting goods (between my bocce balls and corn hole), e3 is a better move than resigns.

17:45 swearing D:

Ivanchuck saw the fortress when he allowed queening
at 17:49 (instead rook to f2) and 17:53 (instead rook to g2) knight to e4 and f5 respectively creates a fork that picks up the queen -more missed opportunities. Ivanchuk could have even won the game. Magnus realized that after both missed opportunities and immediately played Queen to c7. What a lucky draw for him. Chucky had him 2 times in the end. A rook a knight and the king could have easily delivered checkmate to the black king while gobbling up the pawn along the way.

Wow what a game, I believe it's the most oddly satisfying highest level draw ever!!! It's a win for Ivanchuk for me! And it's rapid, not even classical, to be able to pull this impenetrable fortress against one of the all time's great (well, Chucky himself is one of the all time's great for me 🤷)!!!
