Ostinato is what people don’t like especially with the absence of improvisation, a waste of talent considering in this case for John who is much technical than Carlos

As John Coltrane himself declares in the liner notes “A Love Supreme” is a thank you to God. The great saxophonist refers specifically to a spiritual awakening he had in 1957: “I humbly asked to be given the means and privilege to make others happy through music.” [Culture Sonar] 7:43

Wow two great guitarists particularly John Maclaughlin. He is amazing a real talent who was a mazing with the mahavishnu orchestra with the truely great Billy Cobham lon drums and Gerry Goodman on violin plus his other group Shakti who played amazing Indian music. He really is the Ravi Shankar of guitar but sadly often the real greats are so uncommercial you dont hear much of them a great guitarist being Nick Harper who plays a Lowden guitar and is an accoustic guitarist talented as hell like maclaughlin and changes tunings as he is playing. The critics who have heard him have given him several awards for his great playing and he blew everyone away with his performance at the edinburgh free festival a few years ago and he also played the highest gig at everest base camp plus he uses his talents for a charity to help himalayan mountain people with cancer called love hope strength. I find that beautiful that he uses his talent to help bring medical treatment to such poor people. Those nepalese mountain people are so lovely and smile and give so much yet have so little.

“A Love Supreme” has a lyrical, emotional quality. The suite swells ecstatically and hushes dramatically. It has the conversational cadences of a prayer, and the transcendent quality of a dream. The final movement, “Psalm,” was conceptualized as a musical recitation of a devotional poem included in the liner notes. 8:00 [WBUR]
