I was also annoyed when Ferdinand's reaction to Ancelotti picking Modric was "ooh didn't expect that." Of that list of midfielders, I would only take Zidane, Kaka, and maybe Pirlo over prime Modric.

I’ve been a Madrid fan for about 20yrs now and have seen great midfielders play for the club but honestly none can be compared to Modric. Ancelotti missed out on the Spanish title and getting a treble in his first season when he lost Modric to injury. Dude is world class

Guti was a great playmaker but most coaches preferred him coming in as a sub cos he didn’t have a complete midfielders work rate.

I really can’t see anyone saying Modric isn’t better than iniesta or xavi at that this point. If he wins another ucl (knock on wood for this year) I’d put him on the same level as zidane. Who eclipse them all imo. There is zidane and then there is everyone else in my personal book.

I am a Chelsea fan and if I had to choose a player from that list, Modric will be my first choice. He's the most perfect midfielder I've ever seen, there's no flaw in his game. Even at 36, he never ceases to amaze me. He's surely the greatest of all time for me.

They were playing best football that ive seen in madrid with 4 in midfield kroos- modric-isco-james and in attack benzema ronaldo and when modric got injured with national team it all fell apart.

I watch Modric's matches these days, and I am just amazed by his ability to think so quick and never lose the ball. Man's just phenomenal, I have barely seen him lose the ball, not to mention his unbelievable recovery rate even at this age !!!

They weren't as good in midfield and didn't control games that much but they had a pace upfront that could punish everyone, something about that team was just pure entertainment.

Yes Xavi is great, Iniesta is also great and so are many others, but this guy led R. Madrid to 4 consecutive UCL alongside CR7, he took Croatia to WC finals, at 36 one of the key players. His only negative trait is that he comes from small nation. If he was English, French, German it would be totally different story. Yes xavi iniesta won wc and euro league, but the players they had around them in the time is totally different. Cheers to the class

Also not to discredit Owen, but he won the ballon d'or over the likes of Raul, Thierry Henry, Bergkamp, Kluivert, even Puskas never got a Ballon d'Or in that way. Does that mean, according to your logic, all those players are automatically worse than him?

Modric is amazing but that doesn't make him as good as Xavi and Iniesta. He can be an all time great and still not be the greatest of all time. There's very few players in the modern game ahead of him - Xavi, Iniesta, Zidane, Platini and Matthaus are the only ones that stand out to me. After that Modric has as good a claim as any.

We're allowed to believe Iniesta and Xavi were better whilst still appreciating Modric's quality. Modric is the greatest midfielder in modern football. Has pace, great skills at passing, dribbling, great long range shot, volleys, he can run for all the team, leadership, can defend... And still doing all that at almost 37 at the highest level! He can do everything! Is the dream of every coach.

Modric is Carlo's favourite. Now at Real Madrid, Modric is 36 year old and Carlo barely gives him rest...like Modric is in his early 20s or smth.

Kaka between 2003 and 2008 was an amazing player.

Kaka from 2004-2009 imo is clear of any #10 I've ever seen...dude made me fall in love with football.He was unapologetically direct and had no time for circus tricks,he knew what the mission was from the moment he stepped on the pitch. 10/10 technical ability,10/10 passing,10/10 dribbling,10/10 pace.And he had world class finishing and a devastating shot from range.Put some respect on his name.

@@HansBernd180 Zidane could play right in the centre of midfield and had done so on many occasions. Zidane was that good he could play anywhere on the pitch. Pirlo on the other hand was not able to play anywhere. Pirlo was a fantastic player but not at the level of Zidane, Maradona, Pele, Beckenbauer or Cruijff. I could imagine any of the above players anywhere in the attacking set up and still being the best on the pitch but I could not imagine that with Pirlo.

Modric is a beast. Ofc Ancelloti knows that !. But man, Andrea Pirlo for me was like playing as his own pace. No one can touch the ball when he had it. Like Modric, he was playing great even at 36. Amazing player to watch

good to see super frank get recognition. people somehow think that just because he scored a lot of goals it meant he didn't defend or track back well. most complete midfielder the PL has ever seen

Modric to me has been the best midfielder from 2014 . he can play anywhere in midfield and still be more consistent than your fav midfield. he is in the same class bracket as Iniesta, Xavi, Pirlo, Scholes, Matthaus etc.

I'm a United fan but I think he's surpassed Scholes now. Don't forget Modric is incredible for national team too, Scholes wasn't great for England. For me it's Zidane Iniesta Xavi Modric Pirlo Scholes Gerrard Kroos Schweinsteiger Redondo Busquets Seedorf As the best Midfielders I've seen.

Very underrated player, he was very good.

How come people forgot how good Carlo Ancelotti was at Milan Midfield? It's really amazing how people don't mention him... He was almost as good as Kroos. Some players are indeed underrated because they been playing in a full of legends era.

What puts Modric above all the others for me personally is his longevity. At his age all the other greats where either playing in retirement leagues or they were retired, meanhwile he is still a key player for the biggest club in football history.

If Modric was from England, France, Germany or Spain he would be the best midfielder in history...which he is

@@ok-we5nj yes and i saw lampard scoring and assisting goals consistently for 15 plus seasons which won chelsea an average of 1 trophy every year so its an easy pick for me. the only player who gets underrated because he scored a ridiculous amount ofgoals. also lampard wwas equally proficient in playmaking as well and he did his defending job too so he wasnt just a goal scorer. maybe u need to watch football games and not play fifa.

@@rovari524 Modric is not an athletic dribbler that rips through teams, completely different profiles. Prime Kaka is probably one of the best ball carriers in football history. He just didn't have the longevity of the two statistics monsters that came right after him.

Only reason Ancelotti didn't choose ronaldinho was because his prime was at barca and not Milan.

He had rui costa at Milan they forgot him kinda pissed about that. But he still would've went with the same 4
